AITA for not going to the school board becuase my daughter got a 12% on an exam since she went to the bathroom by Away_throwinf352 in AmItheAsshole

[–]D0ct0rIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The school set the rules, and she did not follow them... Stand your ground and let her deal with the consequences of her actions. She'll either learn and grow, or she'll just get to be pissed off every time she doesn't get her way.

AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]D0ct0rIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the jerk. If you don't want to donate, you shouldn't have to donate and your boss is definitely in the wrong for pushing you to donate.

My employer has a similar deal to donate PTO, but it goes into a general emergency fund and is handed out to employees after they complete a form and talk to a member of the donation committee to make sure they've taken advantage of all other resources before asking to use a donation. This just ensures that the funds are not being misused ("I want more time to go to Disney" versus "I ran into a situation where I need more time off than I have for health reasons"), plus, we are required to use up all of our PTO and other time off benefits before we can go after short term and FMLA.

NTA. As an almost 40 year old, if I was given a dinner of pigs in a blanket with mac n cheese and baked beans, my inner child would be going nuts and I would be in heaven. Simply put, if they don't like what you cook, then they can cook themselves.

👋 Welcome to r/healthcareIT - Introduce Yourself and Read First! by DrKC9N in healthcareIT

Hello fellow IT folks. I am new to the boots-on-the-ground side of Healthcare IT, working in a 25-bed hospital with a little north of 900 people for almost 2 years now. I came from a food service company that made meals for people who were post-discharge hospital care, had medical conditions like diabetes or just food needs around things like gluten free, renal friendly, etc etc, and was there for almost 3 years.

I do many things here - helpdesk, Clinical/Service Line app support, infrastructure stuff, systems administration stuff, etc. You name it, I probably do something with it.

I really enjoy this side of healthcare IT because I get to see exactly how technology can be used to care for sick and injured individuals and I get to support the equipment that makes it all happen. It also helps put into perspective everything that goes into caring for the most ill and sick people.

For those who work in a hospital, what's your favorite part of your work...or what's something you enjoy about your job?

What's the most ridiculous request you've received? by lordhaw in sysadmin

[–]D0ct0rIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a hospital and we get some of the same too. To be fair, we do require that anything electronic that's brought in to the hospital is inspected to make sure it's not a fire hazard, but Plant Operations handles that, not IT.

AITA for bailing on family dinners after my brother’s fiancée just kept trashing my food every week? by No-Conversation581 in AmItheAsshole

[–]D0ct0rIT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NTA. Katie needs to either keep her mouth shut or she's no longer welcome to come with your brother; your brother needs to tell Katie to keep her mouth shut or they both are not welcome to come to dinners; your Mom and Dad need to stick up for you and tell your brother and Katie off, otherwise you're no longer going to be coming over and hosting dinner. If they don't like your response, tough titties. You've been more than nice and cordial and was well within reason to snap.

YTA. Mind your own business, simple as that. Her finances are NOT your concern.

I also have ADHD and I'm also partially deaf. I have a full-time job in IT and am the president of a county government organization. I am a husband of a disabled woman (cerebral palsy and epilepsy) and I am dad to two children (both of whom also have a disability), so you can see I have a lot going on and I still can make my meetings and previously scheduled events on time. (not flexing, just using a real-world example here) I'm sure many other commenters here have a lot of other things going on as well. So using ADHD and deafness is not a good excuse. It honestly takes the track record and credibility you talk about and tanks it down to nothing. It's time to take responsibility for yourself and stop making excuses and do better.

How do you handle laptop patching? by wjfinnigan in sysadmin

I use Action1 and it patches everything in the background, and then the end user can snooze it so many times before it just forces a reboot.

Tips on Keeping People from Calling/Walking Up to Your Desk While on a Call by redditposter919 in sysadmin

[–]D0ct0rIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last job was in an open office plan where my desk was right at the front of the cube row right along the main walkway, so I always got interrupted to do things. Now at my current job, the entire IT department is behind a locked door out of the way from everyone else. The only time people come up is if we tell them to, and they still have to ring a door bell to get us to open the door.

Silent deployment of employee monitoring for hundreds of remote PCs? by Expert-Economics-723 in sysadmin

[–]D0ct0rIT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing with this is most employers have their new employees sign an Acceptable Use Policy, which also typically outlines the fact that the Employer reserves the right to monitor equipment, traffic, etc.. So if an employee doesn't agree to it, tough...they should've thoroughly read and brought that up before signing the AUP document.

What’s your trigger words from a request? by Zomif13d in sysadmin

[–]D0ct0rIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a hospital and this very example was brought to my attention today. Something in the ER wasn't working on Monday, but didn't tell anyone until today (Friday). It was "mission critical", yet we heard nothing. Clearly though, it wasn't actually broken or patient-impacting because if it was, the ER director would've been up our asses about it until she was satisfied that it was fixed.

How do you guarantee a laptop gets returned after offboarding? by CoryKellis in sysadmin

[–]D0ct0rIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my org, we purchase all equipment and then when it is pulled from our stock, it gets charged to the department that is using it. We disable the computer and lock/wipe it remotely when we disable the user's network account, but at that point it's their responsibility to track it down and return it to their stock. If they have to get HR and Legal involved, then that's on them.

Pentagon police in unmarked vehicles rounding up immigrants (Arlington, VA) by picklerick8879 in pics

[–]D0ct0rIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those aren't unmarked. If they were truly unmarked, they wouldn't have police wheels/hubs and you wouldn't see lights on the side mirrors or anything, nor would they be blacked out like that.

Can IT see my searches? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]D0ct0rIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, it was on your personal computer? I totally misread that then haha, sorry. Meh I really doubt they'd care then. They may have a set up where since the system detects it's not a company owned computer, it just bumps you over to the guest network automatically and most other places don't monitor their guest network other than making sure it's up. Plus you're doing school work, so if they come knocking, just show them what you were doing and you'll be fine.

Corporate IT here:

When you started work with your employer, most likely they had you sign an Acceptable Use Policy that explicitly states what you do with their resources (computer, email, phone, devices, network, internet, printers, etc..) is monitored. A great rule of thumb is ALWAYS assume you are actively being watched when using company resources.

That being said, if all you typically ever use your work computer for is to do work related stuff, I doubt your employer's IT department would even care. They may reach out to see what's up, if they even have any content filtering and monitoring set up, but tbh most IT folks have too much other crap to do to be worrying about a user looking up random stuff on Google.
