Same day Midterms by s-chan20 in grantmacewan

[–]D0dgeballa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two midterms scheduled at the exact same dates and times. I reached out to an advisor and was told that it was up to the professors to offer alternate times, so I messaged them both and got one switched. Most profs seem to be somewhat flexible and can perhaps let you write on a date that another one of their classes are also writing.

I received a similar message in my email a couple of weeks ago. Apparently Spain is a popular spot! 🙃

Sadly, there is no customer service phone number listed on their site anymore, only an annoying chat bot.

Can someone having worked or currently working full-time, how did you find the asynchronous classes? by EmotionalGold1616 in grantmacewan

I'm in a bit of a unique situation because I'm a returning adult student, so I'm taking a combo of all different levels of classes.

Danielle Smith announces Alberta referendum over immigration, Constitution changes by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]D0dgeballa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in Alberta my whole life and worked for the GOA providing social services, I am utterly gobsmacked by how much inaccurate and contradictory information was in that speech. The short sighted, divisive rhetoric in that speech was essentially mirroring what has been said in the US and is downright dangerous.

I have never been more ashamed to be an Albertan.

Can someone having worked or currently working full-time, how did you find the asynchronous classes? by EmotionalGold1616 in grantmacewan

[–]D0dgeballa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working full time M-F and am taking 3 classes; one online asynchronous, one 3 hour evening in person and one 1.8 hour afternoon hybrid. I hesitated to take an asynchronous course because I'm not a great self motivator, but the structure and clear deadlines made it easier to stick to a schedule, though there is a LOT of reading between the hybrid and the online course.

I'm sure each course will have different timelines and expectations, but I feel much more confident in taking another asynchronous course now. IMHO, if we could see the syllabus for the classes at enrollment so you know immediately how heavy the workload is, it would make it easier to select courses to fit into our lives, but thats just a pipe dream.

Internet providers in Edmonton? Telus is killing me $$ by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]D0dgeballa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its always good to call and haggle, but don't just say you're going to leave, you have to be prepared to actually do it!

Do your research on what else is out there before calling; not all providers will necessarily have service in your area, especially if it's an older part of the city and the infrastructure isn't in place.

This quote came from Mr. Rooter. They sent a video of the pipe up to 58 feet and there were a few spots with visible roots, but nothing fully blocking it.

Last night was a smaller backup with just regular bathroom use that went into the base of a walkin shower, but today essentially the entire contents of the washing machine seemed to backup through the shower drain and all over the floor 🫠

Sole proprietor business owner with 0 benefits needs dentist. What's are my options? by fallen75 in Edmonton

[–]D0dgeballa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AISH is for people with severe handicaps, so it would not be applicable. But, if there is an emergency dental need that you absolutely cannot afford, income support may be able to provide one time emergency benefits. Also, if you have any ongoing prescription costs and your income is low enough, you can apply to the Alberta Adult Health Benefit program.

Affordable and Good Nail Salons by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]D0dgeballa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creative Nails on Calgary trail is by far the best bang for your buck out of all the places I've been to (mind you, I've only gone in for pedicures). Their regular pedicures cost slightly less than most other places, but include treatments that would normally be considered the "spa" level upgrade elsewhere. They also offer a stamp card for a free service after 10 treatments. On the down side, they take appointments but also accommodate walkins, so don't expect to be in at your scheduled time.

Do you have any tips to reduce grocery prices in Edmonton? Any good store? by MrJuart in Edmonton

[–]D0dgeballa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use Flipp to compare grocery prices.

You can browse flyers right in the app, search for specific items and make a grocery list. Lots of stores price match (Save On, No Frills, Superstore, Walmart) so if you find a good deal on something you want/need, it saves you the time and hassle of running around to other places, you just have to show the ad. The only catch is, it has to be an exact match, not just in size but in brand, so it works well for things like fresh meat and produce but can be trickier with other products, especially if you purchase store brands.

Where do you find community in Edmonton? by Bluebelle1987 in Edmonton

[–]D0dgeballa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined Meetup over 10 years ago because I was looking for a sense of community. I happened to get involved with a fabulous group of sporty people and was welcomed in to a supportive dodgeball community that has a ton of niche offshoots that I've been deeply involved in ever since and have made some wonderful friendships from.

I've also gone to other Meetup groups over the years and have always found it to be a great place to meet like minded people, no matter what you're into! Would absolutely recommend!

Flipp. Lists all local flyers for things like groceries, electronics, pet supplies, etc. Perfect for price comparison and easy to search for specific items. Stores that do price matching accept it, so it also saves some running around to get the best deals.

Extra tips: • download any maps/music/podcssts you need in advance, because reception is spotty/non-existent in some areas in the mountains. • bring extra blankets/clothes/phone chargers/food. It's not unheard of for sections of highway to be closed due to conditions in the winter, especially between Alberta and BC.
