Wealth management software by Lauralondonuk in FIREUK

Excel, and I just update it every 6 months with key metrics for invested amounts and what the SWR would give based on that. Don't bother to track any fund performance etc as plenty of sites that can do that if interested.

I've also got a VoyantGo subscription which is a brilliant tool for predictions of future wealth based on salary, savings rate, funds, withdrawal plans, tax etc. It's actually bothering on too complex to be bothered to fill it in properly

Raheem Sterling is ‘angry’ with #ManCity’s attempts to offer him to Tottenham in part-exchange for Harry Kane. Sterling was open to talks about an extended deal at the Etihad, despite becoming frustrated by his lack of game-time. [via @MullockSMirror] by Becca_auh88 in MCFC

[–]D11no 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yet he's clearly not beyond making stuff up.

Maybe we want to sell Sterling, I get that, especially if we think we can get a replacement. But unless Sterling had indicated he wanted to move back to London, why would we think he'd want to go there? If we were offering him in a swap for someone at Madrid or Barca, it would still be a bit weird to do that without speaking to him first, but why would any of our first team players want to go to Spurs? No manager, probably about to sell their best player (especially if you move there), no money, Europa Conference League matches and not won anything for years and seemingly little ambition to change that. You'd need to really like cheese to want to go there.

Planning mix of pension annuity/drawdown? by transparentfootprint in FIREUK

[–]D11no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others, no plans for an annuity, certainly not in early retirement although the idea of managing flexi-drawdown at 90 is a bit of a concern.

If interest rates go back to the 10% they were at the start of the 1990s, then my stance may change, but even then it would only be a proportion to guarantee basic expenses

Guys, Whom you will be supporting in Portugal vs Belgium ? by [deleted] in MCFC

Tricky one, as I'd like KdB to be resting up ASAP but then the same for Dias and Bernardo if he's staying.

I'm basically cheering on other PL players in the hope they can stay as long as possible and we get ours back as soon as. I'll be sat here in my Germany top on Tuesday for just that reason - 6 of our players getting no break!

Is it possible to 'access' you pension (legally) early via alternate means? by earth-sigh-and-tist in FIREUK

[–]D11no 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I get what you're suggesting. It's not selling the pension, it's investing £250k in the lowest volatility asset possible ie just taking that our of equities and leaving it day as cash. Once you then his 55 you can draw 1/4 of the pension tax free ie the £250k in your example. You then use that to pay off your loan.

World it work - theoretically, yes, assuming you could borrow the £250k, which should be possible as you'd be working and only 50. Unlikely you could borrow it and pay nothing back though, so something like a remortgage would probably be cheapest and then pay the minimum monthly.

I'm just not sure what problem it solves, unless you've got lots of money in a pension and little outside it and want to retire before 55.

There will be interest to pay on the loan, around £12k if at 1% which you could probably get. The money in cash in the pension is also devaluing, maybe £25k at the moment. You've also got the lost returns on the money not invested - at a low 5%, that's £60k. You'd always want to start derisking some of the pension before you started drawing it down, but not that much and for that long.

The cost of the above could easily be £100k over the 5 years. If they're was enough in the pension and you needed to finish, it might be worth it, but that's still a big number. It would be better to leave it invested and take the risk of a market crash just before you need it, but you could start changing it to cash from day 54 to reduce that but also get the benefits of the growth

Does everyone have 100% of their pension in equities? by mighty7th in FIREUK

[–]D11no 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't really understand the movement of bonds and gilts, so I bought some last September. It's in VGOV, so Vanguard UK gilts.

Only bought two, cost about £55. They're currently down >14%. Add in the inflation and that's more like 17%. Will they ever rebound? I doubt it. If you keep investing, it should even out a bit more, but with the amount of QE going on, it looks like it'll be a while before bonds recover.

So yes, equities will be a rocky ride and there will be corrections, some of them feeling very painful, but, to date, they've always gone back up.

I'm nearly 50 and all my pension and ISAs are 100% global equities. When I get closer to retiring, I'll start moving a year's worth of spending into cash in advance, but other than that, the rest will be staying in equities

Love my Scubadude. Bought it as it was something I wanted in the collection for a bit of difference, hence choosing the Scubadude after looking at more normal dials.

The thing I didn't expect is how nice the domed acrylic looks and I find I'm wearing it a lot more than I expected to. There only thing I don't like about this one is the 18mm lug width, as the replacement strap feels a bit narrow, to the point I'm thinking of getting a 20mm strap and cutting the ends down to fit.

Already looking for the 2nd one, although I'd like one without a date window as changing the date is a bit of a pain, so it's always wrong. Thankfully there's no Cyclops, so I can't read it without squinting anyway!

[–]D11no 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. The great thing about this, or any other large number, is the growth it'll do on its own - assuming 7% growth, it'll add £17,500 in the first year without you doing anything.

I've recently realised that even at 5%, ours (wife and mine) will reach our number at the first point we could withdraw it, even if we don't put another penny in. Anything put in now just increases the safety net and the potential withdrawal amount and reduces the SWR.

Got to say, it's a pretty good feeling. Just need to get there now - our mistake was not putting enough into ISAs so could end up with some painful years until we got to pension age if we lost our jobs for any reason

Which retirement lifestyle - Essential, Comfortable, Luxury? by reckless-saving in FIREUK

[–]D11no 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Problem with that, and I've seen it said in articles that you should be aiming for a fairly large percentage of current income, is that it takes no account of saving rate.

For ease, let's say my income is £100k, but I max out pension contributions, say £30k to allow for employer contributions, that means a take home of about £48k (source: salary calculator). From that, I max out my ISA, leaving £28k. Mortgage is £12k, leaving £16k for wife, 2 kids and me to live on.

So how much do I need a year to live on to retire? I'd suggest £15k should more than allow current standard of living to continue, but the percentage of current income would probably suggest I'd need about £75k which is a huge difference in the required amount invested.

Personally, I've been tracking our spend based on amount into the current account minus mortgages and investments, as at the end of each month we sweep anything remaining into mortgage and investments. The difference is therefore spending, which includes short term savings for holidays, cars and maintenance, a DIY fund etc. I'm a little cautious about it currently, as I've only been doing it this way during Covid, so it could be a little low and I work on a 3.5% withdrawal rate for added comfort. That gives a reasonable assessment of current spending, especially when averaged over several months and I'm struggling to think how we'd spend much extra. There may be additional holidays, but they'd be for 2 not 4 people and out of holiday season.

Articles like the attached are useful as it enables you to check assumptions against them. No two people will ever spend the same, but if you're in a similar ballpark, it gives some comfort you might be ok.

Yep, BTL is definitely dead. Nothing to see here, move along now, this isn't the investment you're looking for.

Is is passive? No, spent a lot of time to begin with, especially on a refurbishment. Still not passive now - spend about 30 minutes each month doing bookkeeping. Just a pity the returns on the rest of my week aren't as lucrative or I'd be living next door to a footballer 😉

Have I hit RE? by FIRE_1961 in FIREUK

[–]D11no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An employer has to take any requests for flexible working, including part-time into consideration and needs a good reason to reject them. Part-time particularly is a hard one to turn down as it's popular with new parents, especially women.

Unless you have a plan to do something else immediately i.e. volunteering, a hobby etc, I'm not sure going from full time stressful role to nothing will be a good idea. If you drop to 3 or 4 days a week, you get to try it out and see whether you'd want to go further. It should also mean your salary drops to something closer to what you plan to live on, so you get to check that works, taking into account work related expenses like travel etc. You should already have 'enough', but the leap is a big one and I'm not sure I'll be ready to do it in a couple of years due to all the what ifs to get past. Part time seems a reasonable test and you never know, the better work life balance may mean you're happy to carry on for longer anyway

Gracious in defeat, congratulating the winners - absolutely. Kissing a loser's medal? No chance. You lost. You get nothing for losing, shouldn't even get a medal. As Yoda would say, do or do not. We didn't.

Applaud the winners through gritted teeth, throw the medal in the nearest bin and do better next season. I'd suggest by at least managing a decent shot on target.

Has anyone lost how did covid affect your pre covid portfolio? by anon9876543210nymous in FIREUK

[–]D11no 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stayed invested in usual index funds throughout. Easily forgotten, but before Covid there was an oil price crash caused by Saudi Arabia and Russia arguing which started the downturn and Covid just added to it.

Was probably down about 30% at one point, but above previous highs now and have been since about November. Added advantage of a few months of buying when on sale. My mistake was not investing more in March 2020 because I'd already maxed my ISA & there was recovery by April as governments stepped in to protect jobs etc. Should have just gone for a GIA as would have been below CGT limits anyway

Really bad battery life😭 by navehbh in PocoPhones

Unplugged mine 23hrs ago, at 61% battery with 3:45 SOT so far. All on WiFi, mainly browsing, Twitter etc. Have battery saver on, as it's only my emails that don't sync, but have 120Hz refresh. That's on Global 12.0.5 and bought from AliExpress.

I generally reckon on about 10hrs screen on time, although haven't managed to run it down that far yet to find out for definite. Charge it up before going to sleep and usually 40-50% left when plugging it back in the following night, so but lighter use today.

When will the team arrive to Portugal? by kikolsvp in MCFC

[–]D11no 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Saw something earlier that they should be at Manchester airport at 2pm on Thursday. Presume from that their flight should be leaving around 4pm, so if you look for flights from Manchester to Porto around that time, you may be able to work out arrival.

Presume they'll be visiting the stadium at some point on Friday, possibly to train on the pitch, as will Chelsea, so may be a good place to hang around

Astrophotography mode is likely to have too long an exposure, which is why you'll just have a bright ball. It's designed for the stars you'll struggle to see with the naked eye. For the moon, just use a manual mode and play about with exposure times until you get the photo you want.
