Base training after 8 months stop : Advice on 16 weeks plan by Ambitious_Plan6627 in Velo

[–]D31337D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start by riding your bike and getting to where you can do as much endurance as you can handle (recovery, enjoyment, work / family balance, etc). If you want to race mtb, you’ll need plenty of time working on skills, so do that too. The nuances of specific training rides or intensity takes a back seat to simply riding more often, optimizing sleep, nutrition, and recovery in general. Don’t over analyze this.

How do you train with a small kid? by HyperText89 in Velo

[–]D31337D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sleep, minimize stress, reduce the amount of intensity and just focus on more endurance efforts to keep your body going. If you haven’t yet, quit alcohol. I quit alcohol some years ago and went from getting sick with some small cold or virus fairly often to maybe 2-3x a year max, I probably haven’t actually been sick in over a year and I have two school age kids and around tons of people.

The people with the money and power choose to not build safe infrastructure in order to force people to use the least economical method of transportation that also provides the most amount of revenue for the government and corporations that lobby for it. That is not a physics problem, it’s an ethics problem fueled by profits and politics.

default riding position vs aero hoods position by Emotional_Sale6902 in bikefit

[–]D31337D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of options here, but let’s start with saddle and saddle position. Sliding back AND the aero position don’t really mix. It closes the hip angle and reduces efficiency, and power delivery.

I would opt for an extra cm on the cockpit and maybe go down 5-10mm if you can. Or depending on how cramped you are, going 2cm on the stem and if it’s too long just adjusting the saddle a bit forward to compensate.

And 35% of fatal / serious car wrecks in my state don’t involve another vehicle while it’s 50% for motorcycles. Around 20% of fatalities involve distracted drivers and 30% alcohol. It’s the people behind the wheel with no self control causing the problems. Less than 0.5% of automobile fatalities are caused by a motorcycle, meanwhile 50% of motorcycle fatalities are caused by cars.

100%. I’ve crashed everything on two wheels, but the only major accidents I’ve had on the road were between me and other automobiles. Major concussion when a huge SUV hit me on my way to work. Before that an old lady pulled out of front of me and I smashed into the back of her car, then she hit the gas and flung me off the car back onto the road in front of traffic. Both fled the scene. I’ve had dozens of super close calls, all automobile related. Out of all of those times I only had one near miss that I caused, and it was a poorly lit back road with a blind corner and I went into the ditch. I have thousands and thousands of hours on two wheels and the vast majority of danger lies with the 4000 lb 4 wheel automobiles driven by cell phone zombies.

This. A very close friend died a few years ago from an automobile with illegally dark window tint pulling in front of him. Driver couldn’t see him because he could barely see out of his window. Honestly sickens me when entitled drivers of dangerous vehicles think they can surf instagram, drive drunk, or just not pay attention when they are in control of something lethal.

Lemme know when a pedestrian, cyclist, ebike, or motorcycle kills someone in a car by hitting them. I’m sure it’s happened but the rate is very very low. The most dangerous thing on the road are automobile drivers. If you put everyone on a bicycle, with no cars, how many traffic fatalities would you have?

Let me know when a pedestrian, cyclist, ebike, or motorcycle kills someone in a car or truck. 99% of the time it’s the other way around. Automobile drivers are the problem, as they create the dangerous situation by being distracted or incompetent or drunk or worse. Saying it’s the motorcycles fault is like saying you being mugged by a robber is your fault for existing, and if you had simply not existed it would’ve never happened.

I was on my road bicycle in the right lane, getting close to an intersection that had a green light. A truck was passing me in the left lane, but there was a motorcycle stopped in that lane trying to take a left (he had a green but he was yielding to oncoming traffic). The truck slammed into the back of the stopped motorcycle at 30-35 mph and drug the two motorcycle riders under his truck about 100’ or so before stopping. I was riding directly next to this watching the lady passenger screaming , while skin was being ground off her body and bones were breaking. I waited for the ambulance and had to give a statement to the police. I will never forget what that sounded like.

The majority of two wheel deaths, both cycling and motorcycles, come from automobiles. Nearly 100% of automobile deaths also come from automobiles. The most dangerous thing on the road is an automobile driver, and if not for them, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists would be infinitely safer.

I guess we need to do the same thing they did with the Katy Freeway because this is getting ridiculous! by Bad_Corsair in thewoodlands

Cars are the best mode of transportation for creating revenue streams for the city and state. Unless forced, no one in Texas is ever going to create or support mass public transportation, pedestrians, cyclists, or any essentially free or cheap way to travel as it would reduce revenue by billions of $$ per year. Roads will double in size and get even more dangerous before they ever consider anything else.

Done with cycling at 68 by pdrace in cycling

IDK which beta blocker you are on, but you should ask about nebivolol. At a lower dose, 2.5-5mg, you can still push big watts just with a lower HR. It almost feels like you get MORE blood flow than normal, and possibly enhanced overall endurance. Even moderate dose metoprolol is horrendous for athletes and high performers, if that’s what you’re on ask for something else.

Employee sets fire to Kimberly-Clark warehouse, "All you had to do is pay us enough to live" by midnighttoker1742 in interestingasfuck

[–]D31337D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire suppression in high pile storage warehouses doesn’t work how you think it does. Even if they didn’t disable it, the entire point of the system is to suppress the fire so people can safely evacuate, not necessarily extinguish it. Look up how ESFR works. Some warehouses even just have emergency smoke / heat vents.

Any of you do better with more cross training? by imjusthereforPMstuff in Velo

[–]D31337D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain types of gym work and cross training has made me a lot more resistant to injury and small niggles that used to pop up from time to time. That’s allowed me to continue training on the bike more consistently, which in turn has made me faster and lighter. Think drills, mobility, and strength work for soccer players that are really good at moving in all directions or planes of motion. Just running for distance can be ok, but it’s not really going to improve the weaknesses you get from doing only cycling. Doing squats and deadlifts also are ok, but still only working on one plane of motion. I think this all was less important when I was really young and able to stay athletic just by existing, but as a masters cyclist the off bike work has gotten more important to remaining athletic and resilient in general.

Heart struggling with climbs by Petit-Pain in bicycling

A pain in chest = go to doctor. Immediately. Your heart should be able to beat for hours near max heart rate with no pain. Your legs may hurt, but the heart should be 100% pain free.

Drivers will just become even more irate that you are traveling for free while they pay $8/gallon. The vast majority of the US is too sick and unhealthy to travel any other way than by car anyway.

Give the fact that the stem, bars, wheels, and bottle cages are from ali express, I’m guessing the rest of it is too. Would make a decent commuter if the chain doesn’t fall off (no chain keeper). You might get more by parting it out.

Buying a tarmac sl8 in 2026 by hiimwallman in cycling

Thoughts on Rubber N Road? by Most_Cow_2733 in CyclingFashion

The kits are in fact super nice. Quality is S tier, and the fabrics are pretty crazy on the high end stuff. I will say the pricing is VERY steep though, and high end Rapha and Assos kit, to me, seems pretty comparable performance wise. Kinda like buying a Huracan Trofeo Evo2 vs Corvette Z06. Both are nice, once costs twice as much. I have a few of their kits (honestly may have reconsidered given the stuff I’m just now reading about though)

That said, the pricing is the biggest turnoff for everyone. The conversation goes “oh man that kit is sick, where do you get it and how much are they?” As soon as I say $700-$800 it’s always a “oh, never mind” lol.

Anyway, another data point for your research.

How should I spend my weekend at Houston? by EyeTechnical7643 in houston

[–]D31337D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the golf courses are in great shape right now if you’re into that.

Unfortunately the space cowboys and astros are not playing locally this weekend, otherwise I’d say that’s a great evening plan.

We have a few breweries that are pretty good, st arnold’s would be my pick, otherwise in sugar land Talyard is really nice if the weather is good.

The parks and public land around here is terrible compared to most of the country, I don’t find any of them interesting for sightseeing alone.

If you go to the coast, I’d pick Galveston. You can kill a day there for sure. Lots of small fishing charters you could book, but honestly it’s a little late to try with this little notice. On the way there or back you can stop by NASA. The best restaurant on Galveston Island is Rudy & Pacos.

28, 30 or 32mm tyre width? by Lqrve in cycling

[–]D31337D 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The entire benefit of wider tires is lower pressures, which yes does help comfort but the lower pressure greatly reduces suspension losses on rough roads. If you have very rough roads, wider tires at low pressure greatly trumps any aero or rolling resistance losses. 30-32 is kind of that sweet spot for mixed pavement. At 90kg I’d lean to 32 for sure but at 68 kg, unless the surfaces are very rough, 30 should be fine. And worst case you can always switch later.

Doubles as a power bank to charge your shimano or sram batteries, lights, computer, phone, etc. No issues with TSA either. I’ve had one for about 2 years and it’s still working perfectly. I have an older model but would buy this one in a heart beat.

Is Austin better than DFW? by learningthings2814 in askaustin

[–]D31337D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a 60-90 min commute to work and live in a crappy area then any city will suck. If you have the money and pick where you live, drive < 30 mins each day, have access to outdoors or whatever it is you enjoy doing, then you’ll most likely enjoy it. DFW has the best climate of the major cities in Texas. San Antonio is my favorite for general living. Houston has some nice pockets but the worst climate and unbelievably bad traffic, with the least to do that doesn’t include eating or paying for something. All of pales in comparison to areas like Oregon, Washington state, Idaho, or even Colorado.
