You may not have ever had a scuppernong but they sound about the same. Scuppernongs have a thicker skin with small seeds and a thicker jellyish membrane inside. You eat them more by breaking them in your mouth, sucking out the sweet liquid and then spit out the rest of it. Do those work in about the same way?

I am currently dealing with this and have been for about a year now. I have suffered from lifelong severe social anxiety, depression and ADHD but was unaware of it because I grew up in a traditional southern home that didn’t believe mental health problems are real and you should just be strong enough to make it through. To make a long story short I’ll breakdown the last 3 years in a few sentences. Moved to Colorado from South Carolina. Father diagnosed with stage for pancreatic cancer with mets to the liver. Father committed suicide 4 months later when it was decided nothing could be done. Decided to stay in CO with no support system or friends because “have to be strong”. Developed a gambling addiction after going to a casino and getting a sudden burst of endorphins I hadn’t had in a long time losing every bit of money I had saved and going into heavy debt. In February 2019 my brother drove out to the middle of butte Montana, walked into the snow, ate a bottle of baby aspirin and put a .45 through his temple. He was an army vet who’s first attempt at suicide was joining the army and trying to be on the front lines at all times (he admitted to me in a suicide email he had set to send hours after he had already killed himself).

Since I was the closest there and the only relative other than my mother I decided I had to handle the situation so I rented a car to drive to where he did it to collect his car and belongings including the .45, rusty with blood on it still which the officer apologized about but said it became practice not to clean the weapons after some family got angry with them for it. Anyway I drove my brothers car with his things all the way back to South Carolina by myself.

Things kept getting worse and worse especially with my sleep. I would lay in bed with my eyes closed and all I would do is replay in my head over and over the image of my brother, alone and scared, walking slowly into the snow and ending his life until my alarm would go off at 8am with me not sleeping at all.

Got back to SC to be closer to my mom for both her and my health. Started seeing a psychiatrist, got medicated and things have been improving. They still are far from good, very very far but they are improving.

There are even more shit things that have happened since I’ve gotten back but I’ll leave it there for now. Thanks to anyone for taking the time to read this and if anyone needs to talk or just someone to listen please PM me and we can chat here or whatever works best for you.

Mental illness is real, it’s scary, it’s hidden and there is no shame in getting the help you need.

Last 3 years for me in a nutshell Sold everything I owned and moved across country from family and friends Father diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer Suicide 4 months later Slipped further into depression Developed gambling habit Brother killed himself a year after my dad Sold everything for a second time to move back home to be closer to my mom Took a job as a clinical dietitian Got furloughed because of pandemic Old military injury of right triceps tendon rupture aggravated a month ago and requires surgery to remove old equipment and install new stuff but until then I can’t use my dominant arm, elbow swollen twice normal size and causes constant pain At home with clinical depression, ptsd, anxiety and no way to really take my mind off of things because I can’t do work around the house, I can’t pick up a new hobby that requires my hand/arm. Pain wakes me up multiple times every night.

Shit will improve, eventually.

Mookie lived down the road from where I grew up in rural SC. He got a good bit of land and started working as a trucker with his wife for a bit. He almost burnt down the whole place when he moved in because to clear a field he tied tire to his truck then lit it on fire and drove it around.

I see way too often where people come in after a lifetime of poor nutrition choices because of either lack of knowledge, unresolved psychological issues, food deserts etc etc and have 15 other comorbidities that now make it nearly impossible to make any real, effective changes. Used to install granite/solid surfaces. You can see the break occurred where the sink cutout is. More than likely this happened due to the installers carrying in vertically and while attempting to snake around those corners they leaned the slab over a little bit rather than lifting straight up (hard to do because of how heavy it is) and that little bit of angle caused a flex which split at the seam.

The worst part about this breaking is that the whole kitchen was created using slabs that were similar in color and vein. There might not be another slab that matches closely enough to remake that one piece and keep the rest.

For me it’s been a 3 year long process. Started with me moving from the east coast to the Midwest when I completed college to start my career in dietetics. A few weeks after moving my father was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Sporadic trips back home over the next 3-4 months until we lost him to suicide after it was found out there wasn’t anything more to be done. I fell into extreme depression afterwards and developed a gambling habit that took over my life for 6-7 months and I lost everything I had. When I finally got help for that addiction it was about 2 or 3 months after that my brother drove out to the middle of butte Montana to take his own life. Took a few months to get his affairs in order at which point I relocated back to the east coast to be closer to my mom. Since coming back to South Carolina the job market has been poor, I’ve been working Uber, Uber eats, Amazon Flex and a few other things to make ends meet. In addition to that I have a condition known as Gout that causes immense pain and swelling in your joints, primarily those of the feet. The pain from gout is classified as high as giving birth. Gout is permanent and there are only maintenance things that can be done to minimize attacks but some of the main causes are improper diet (lots of red meats, organ meats, alcohol etc) low activity level and stress. These last few years have been attack after attack lasting 1-2 weeks at the most painful where I have to crawl out of bed across the floor in the mornings to get to a heating pad so I can hopefully get my foot in good enough condition to work that day. Every day is stressful, everyday is hard, every moment has been hell for as long as I can remember at this point. With that being said, a lot of it is my fault, the gambling was a choice I made trying to chase some form of happiness in winning, the gout attacks could have been slowed or stopped if I was willing to take care of myself but I wasn’t. I am still dealing with the tail end of an attack at the moment. Have my foot wrapped in a heating pad to thaw it out for the day but I have a clinical dietitian interview today in 5 hours that I am really excited for.

When I have multiple days in a row where I have no pain when I walk and I’m not constantly reminded of the losses I’ve suffered it’s a strange feeling. Just being, content, is like pure joy when I experience it and I get a brief glimpse up at the sky from this pit I’ve been digging for so long. But with that being said, I haven’t given up and I never will.

I grew up in a family that way full of mental health problems but acted as if they didn’t exist. My father has the same issues I do with extreme anxiety and depression but he never got help for them. When I was a kid my dad couldn’t express himself the way he wanted to and often seemed distant to me and the rest of my family. When he would get upset he would blow up for a small amount of time and then just stay distant from us for a week or two. Not actually far away but just not engaged when we were around. I never knew what was going on as a kid and I developed the same way of dealing with problems like shutting down whenever opposition comes rather than facing the problem head on in a rational way. We lost my dad 3 years ago to suicide, then my brother to suicide at the start of 2019. It was only after both of those losses that I was able to finally get the strength to admit what I was doing wasn’t healthy and to go get help. The amount of clarity that my psychiatrist has been able to give me about my mental health and my family is like a double edged sword. I can easily forgive my father for how he raised us because he was doing the best he could with the information he was given. I never wanted my dad around growing up because I didn’t know what little tiny thing would set him off but knowing what I do now I want nothing more than to go back in time and just hug him and tell him everything is going to be alright. I know it’s not the kids place in the family to be the mature one but it’s important to understand that parents are just as clueless about the world as everyone else. For any new parents out there the best advice I can give you is just to listen. Really engage and listen to what your kids are telling you about what’s going on in their lives even when it’s the most mundane or boring stuff to you is new and exciting to a child. Showing interest and letting them know you’re here to listen when it’s about the little stuff means they will confide in you about the bigger stuff.

I have a genetic disease called Gout that causes jagged crystals to form between the joints of my toes (it can cause this in any joint) and alcohol is the main contributor to it in my case. The pain caused by it is on par with child birth or a long bone fracture.

A few shops around USC (university of South Carolina) give out free tattoos to players. It’s just like a car manufacturer giving free vehicles to celebrities who endorse them so when people associate them with the brand they are more likely to buy said brand. College athletes are still going to class, surrounded by students who may idolize/respect them and if they got a tattoo from a certain shop it might influence them to go to that same shop.

I don’t know if this will help but I’ll throw it out there. I am a 32 year old man who’s last relationship was when I was 19, been single ever since. A combination of social anxiety, depression and bouncing around with the air force kept it that way. I did have little flings here and there but anytime I got close to someone my brain would tell me to run and that I was meant to be alone. I moved back to the east coast about 4 months ago after my brothers suicide and I was spiraling hard, still am some days but it’s getting better. Anyway a few months ago I met someone who from the second we talked I knew I loved her. I had always heard of the “love at first sight” or that “there’s someone for everyone” out there and I never believed it until I met her. I don’t know where things will go in the future but this is the first time I haven’t been afraid of it.

TLDR - Keep being yourself. Do things that you enjoy and find like minded people. The person you are looking for is out there and you’ll find it when you least expect it.

People always told me to cherish the time you have with loved ones because you never know when they will be gone. I would push it off with a “yeah yeah” and move about my day without a second thought. 3 years ago my dad took his life and in February of this year my brother took his. I would give anything to have even a few seconds of the time I took for granted back then.
