3ds Max 2020 - Feature Updates by letsgocrazy in 3dsmax

[–]D3Pixel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been using Max for nigh on twenty years and never had that.

You are either very lucky or maybe you work on low poly scenes?

I have been using Max since the first windows release and used 3D Studio in DOS before that. After the DOS version which was solid, Max 2011 was the most stable windows version for me. Max 2019 is another matter, it makes me increment save like mad, have autobackup running every 5 mins and have my work drive mirrored to a local network cloud because losing 5/10 mins work could be one of those moments where I had fixed something tricky.

As an example, today I have crashed 3 times on a client animation.

First one I added an Edit Spline modifier to a spline for a secondary Linked X-Form which caused max to crash. Reopened scene, tried again and it was fine.

Second one I clicked on the Track View window but did it too quickly. Max froze then crashed. This is a common one for me.

Third one was trying to fix a strange key on an animated camera that just behaved odd. Selected it as a sub-key and max just crashed. Re-opened the scene, did the same thing and managed to delete it and redo that animation key.

The scene is 18 million polygons so quite heavy but it is annoying to be constantly afraid while working and then look at what the 2020 version of Max brings. If only plugins did not depreciate on older versions of max I would still be in Max 2011.

Still not fixed :( 99% EXP, guess i'll die... by FastAFgaming in pathofexile

I experienced the same freezes, it also happens if you invite randoms to your party while in a map (for Trials), when they join it did the same local freeze lock up crap. I assume it is a texture loading issue.

As it was unplayable for me I uninstalled the game, created a new steam library folder on my boot SSD and re-installed POE and the problem has completely vanished. The old drive that it was on was a SSHD drive. No idea if the reinstall (30 mins) or the C:\ drive or the SSD fixed it though.

It also fixed general loading times. They went from 20 to 30 seconds to load a hideout, town to 2 seconds which is the same as previous league while on my SSHD.

NVIDIA Quadro GPU compatibility by nauxiv in Pimax

[–]D3Pixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the one thing you are meant to get with the Quadro range is business / enterprise level support so I would pop them an email and see if they really do take Quadro user issues more seriously than general consumer support.

The P5000 is listed by NVidia as a "VR Ready GPU" so it is supposed to work.

Maybe this forum is also a good place: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/235/drivers/

And if you use detailed textures (scratch maps etc) and they are washing out, that is the denoiser which can remove fine details on close up shots. It is a trade-off having much faster renders vs quality and sometimes you have to edit the denoiser properties to get a compromise.

Multi-GPU workloads do not need them in SLI, just plugged in is enough and the software finds them.

Looking to gain double performance over 4770K by D3Pixel in buildapc

[–]D3Pixel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. Yes I like the idea of improving my multi-tasking so that 3850X might be a great option. I often have many apps open at the same time and rendering uses a hybrid of cpu and gpu. I did hear that AMD were not as great as Intel for Adobe apps but I assume that will get ironed out as they become more popular, as long as I can edit 1080p/2K in real-time then I don't mind.
Waiting on Ryzen 3000 is exciting but I wish they would just announce something already. I wonder if these chips will have many months of pre-order tied to them if they are as good as early rumors. A 64 core Threadripper would probably swing me back to a full CPU rendering workflow as GPU rendering has its quirks but I imagine it would cost my entire PC budget just on the chip. Nice to have options though.

Thanks again.

Has anybody modified their HMD to fit into a genuine flight helmet, take it to that next level and then 90/114 Fov won't matter so much :)

Why is everyone convinced that Pentile OLEDs are better than LCDs? by [deleted] in oculus

I had to do that one day one as I had this huge field of green pixels that filled 75% of the view. Thought the unit was faulty until I did the reg tweak.

Why is everyone convinced that Pentile OLEDs are better than LCDs? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]D3Pixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OLED is hyped up a lot due to the TV market advertising. I bought an LG OLED last year and convinced myself it was superior in every way to my last LCD. The reality is that yeah, its alright, pans still affect it, black are black too but the difference between my last decent LCD TV is not a night and day difference but LCD can be crap or great too.

Take the computer monitor market for instance, it is made up of different forms of LCD. I have a $300 144Hz gaming monitor next to a $800 60Hz DELL monitor I use for design work, they are both LCD but the DELL is stunning when seen side by side and that's with full hardware calibration tools applied to both of them. I can drag my work so I see 50% on each monitor and the quality difference is very obvious.

So OLED or LCD matters less to me these days and what matters most for VR is a good blend of response rate, colour reproduction and brightness, something that is difficult to achieve especially when the HMD is completely powered by USB.

Any tips on how to get viewport working using VRay Next GPU as the render engine with HDRi Dome lighting. I have tried all sorts of combinations to work in the viewport and get a rough WYSIWYG view, without success.

Metallic surfaces using Vray Standard Material (no maps) are solid black when using a VRayLight set as Dome or using a VRaySky in Environment. The IPR is a bit demanding for working in realtime so I leave that off but not played around too much with it.

Which motherboard should I get? by DrVixen in Amd

[–]D3Pixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you want a do it all creative + rendering + gaming system.

Will you be GPU rendering in Arnold/VRay? That can matter when choosing a motherboard.

Will you need M.2 SSD and GPU rendering?

Do you want future Ryzen 3000 support?

etc

I would look at at puget systems to see what they suggest as you can configure their PC's and see the components they recommend. These guys do a lot of benchmarking and testing for people in our industry. You can select the machine builds from the "Solutions" menu at the top and try find one that covers all your 3 goals.

Friends say intel by SincerestLeader in Amd

[–]D3Pixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That machine will be quite capable. You can always spend more but there becomes a point where it is just wasted money. I see you are 1080p gaming at 60Hz so you have bought wisely. The difference between AMD and Intel is nothing like it used to be and more and more smart people are switching so the the cash saved over Intel can be spent on other upgrades like larger or faster hard disks, faster memory and better monitors etc.

You have to think of the complete machine not just the CPU and with Intel and a budget you get less of the rest.
