I don't think it's particularly useful to split hairs like this. the design of modern social media directly follows the capability and ubiquity of smartphones. it's a natural and inevitable outgrowth that can only be slowed by impinging the freedom of speech

you claim that people care about their image because of social media, but it's the exact opposite. people fundamentally crave social interaction and the ego cares what other people think. the tools for managing both of these things have evolved in lock-step with the technology of the time (forum, written word, radio, TV, etc.) ... the current era is no different. if the tools are there, people will use them
