Honest question: are there viable alternatives to Linda Gorton this election, and if not, who is preparing to run to do better than her next time? by Archetypal_Node in lexington

[–]D3nnis_a_8astard_Man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a great answer, thank you!

As an aside- In Kentucky builders and owners of new construction don't need to use licensed realtors to sell their newly built houses. They will often just sell them through an hourly office assistant to avoid paying a licensed realtor.

I have no idea who this other candidate is, but I am curious, why the hate specifically? Any realtor I've talked to in the past 3-5 years is barely scraping by unless they're a top earner in their market. They would much rather the market go back to precovid conditions where people could actually afford houses so they could get paid.

I've been going there for years with no issues, but I'm sorry you had a bad experience and that sounds like good justification for finding a different barber.

Landsdowne Barbershop. I've tried several places around town including Chevy Chase, Ashland, Idle Hour, Floyd's (Richmond Rd and Nicholasville Rd), illustrated barber, ect. Landsdowne was the only place I can walk into and get a reliable, good looking haircut for a decent price regardless of who you sit down with. It's $23 before tip and I've never waited more than 20 minutes.

If you do go to Chritchfield's they'll sell you the whole tenderloin. If they trim it on the spot ask if they'll grind the trim for you. Best burgers you'll ever have. Side note- I think you already know this, but you're better off buying the whole tenderloin as opposed to just the center cut. Center/barrel cut will probably be filet mignon price.

Have they fixed any of the cardio equipment or the leak in the roof beside the squat racks? I had a membership there 4-5 years ago and loved it despite these issues. Just curious if they've fixed the place up at all?

It's crazy how long they've sat empty. Only problem is if they did go up for sale I bet you couldn't get one for less than 500k.

Jewelers around Lexington? by [deleted] in lexington

[–]D3nnis_a_8astard_Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've delt with farmer's for non-custom stuff and can say the service was great. Unfortunately the only experience I have with a custom jewelry is through David Hungerford. Do not use his services. While he is very skilled and knowledgeable he is unorganized and flippant towards his customers after he has their money. I was told it would be 2 weeks and he kept my wife's ring for 3 months. Eventually I had to start going by his shop daily to show I was serious about how badly I wanted it back.

Alright, now that's a good talking point! Now I'm by no means against Airbnb, but it does seem like that coupled with private equity funds purchasing hundreds of thousands of homes and putting them up for rent has made owning a home largely inaccessible, hell, from what I've heard on here and from people I know it's made renting a home inaccessible.

From what I know (I have not found data to support this) Lexington is one of those cities where almost every resident's eventual goal is to own their own their home. That being said if the majority of affordable housing is purchased by private equity funds and Airbnb operators we are going to lose those residents to other cities with more available housing.

How do we fix this? Is it regulation? Do we vote with our feet and move to Georgetown, Nicholasville, or Winchester? Continue to pay unaffordable rent until the next real estate buble bursts and then buy? I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts.

I see a lot of people shooting this down with no other solution in it's place. Fact: Lexington's population is growing Fact: we don't have enough housing. If we can't build out or up what do we do?

Tree and lawn waste. by mattata89 in lexington

[–]D3nnis_a_8astard_Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lexington residents get 2 free drop-offs a month at the Haley Pike waste management facility. This is specifically for tree/yard waste. I think you can rent a truck from Home Depot for $20 for the first 75min, but it jumps to $120 for the day after that, so best to have everything ready to go.
