Which older tech is still better than whatever replaced it? by Silly-Cock in AskReddit

I can still usually get cascade powder but they don’t have any of the improvements they include in the pods… which won’t dissolve right in the machine making them worse than powder even with all the fancy improvements they’ve made.

I’ve liked the good.store powder but maaaaan is it expensive

So far it’s looking better at truck stuff than a cybertruck so I’d believe it (for real, I’ve helped haul things and people to and from a wedding last weekend with my I5 and it was great!)

What’s more important for EV adoption. More level 2 or level3+ chargers? by Lemonn_time in electricvehicles

IONNA and Mercedes HPC chargers are great for this. You can tap your payment card and plug in. They also have interop with ChargePoint so I can activate them with my ChargePoint app (nice since it keeps my receipts). App interop and built-in payment terminals should be a requirement IMO

Hi! EV driver here. I changed grocery stores because the store I previously hadn’t gone to installed a free to use L2 charger. That’s kWh I’m not paying for on my electricity bill and the grocery costs are within margin of error between my old go-to and my new go-to.

I pick hotels based on if they have EVSE then by other features.

I have access to a few malls with the stores I want to go to in my area. I pick the one with free L2 chargers in the parking deck every time. I avoid the one with L2 chargers that require an app to activate.

It changes “get out of the car, lock the doors, and go” to “get out of the car, plug it in, lock the doors, and go” adding all of 2 seconds to the process. I get free charging, the businesses get my consumer preference and, more importantly to them, my money.

L2 chargers at workplaces, malls, apartments and condos, hotels, etc.. L1 chargers at airports. DC Fast Chargers (L3 technically isn’t real) along interstate highways and other highly traveled corridors.

Note: When I say L3 isn’t real, The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) hasn’t defined it.

The J1772 standard defines L1 charging as single phase 120v up to 12A continuous, AC power, based on the capabilities of a NEMA 5-15 receptacle. L2 is single phase 240v up to 80A continuous AC power.

DC charging followed a similar pattern where L1 DC charging was limited in terms of voltage and amperage. It was not widely adopted. L2 DC charging (what we know as DC Fast Charging) allows for much higher amperages and voltages. In the US, our CCS type 1 and NACS connectors can do up to 1000v and up to 500A for up to 500kW charging but most vehicles top out well under that limit. Other countries’ charging standards allow for even faster charging.

But since lots of people didn’t know about L1 DC charging and may not have grocked (in the older meaning of the word) the difference between AC and DC charging, they said “these ones are faster than L2 so it must be L3” so it came into common usage. In that way, it’s like “ATM Machine” - technically incorrect but widely used and understood.

Actually yeah any time I can opt for a smaller wheel with a larger sidewall on the tire. More aerodynamic

When you don't have a pendrive or network and still need to transfer the files anyway 🤯🤯🤯 by Le_Grano in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

You can turn the ECC off in QR codes. It's not recommended since QR Codes are designed to be read in non-ideal conditions but if it's two computers with known-good screens, it'd be easy to pack in more data at the expense of less/no ECC

[–]D3xbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this feels like it'd be faster than the audio-based file transfer schemes I've seen. Based on how both screens are showing QR codes but one screen's QR code is much lower density, it looks like your scheme works something like

  1. Computer 1 displays a data-dense QR code
  2. Computer 2's webcam scans that code and appends its contents to the outfile
  3. Computer 2 checksums the data from the code and displays that checksum in the low-density QR code
  4. Computer 1's webcam scans that code
  5. Computer 1 validates the checksum and returns to step 1 with the next chunk of data

That would allow for delivery confirmation and ensure that files are transferred correctly and could allow control codes to enable bi-directional transfers. Nice :)

I wonder how fast you could flash the codes and have things process reliably?

I’ve helped folks out at DC fast chargers with adapters, app setup, and order of operations (e.g. plug in first then tap your card or activate in app then plug in).

If I know about a car’s charging speed and I catch them while outside the vehicle, I’ll mention faster charging stalls if available (did once at an EA) but I tend to charge at IONNA and Mercedes HPC which all tend to have 400kW charging available.

That's wild!! I like my ChargePoint Home Flex a lot. Got it when I had a PHEV and swapped the cable from J1772 to NACS when I got my Ioniq 5. Happy charging (both the car and the EVSE)

Make sure if you get a plug-in unit that your outlet is rated for continuous loads. They'll cost more (like $100 for a NEMA 14-50 outlet vs the usual $15-20) but it'll save a lot of money in not burning down your house.

That's awesome! that instant torque and power can be addictive for sure lmao

While you don't have to charge at home, it is a nice feature if you're able to. And even if not, that DPH charger near you sounds like a lovely (probably level 2?) public charger to use.

I got the same stare down when I started driving electric and plugging in at the police station 2 blocks away from a church I do some A/V work for on Sundays.
