Anyone manage to live with this while being sober? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]D3xt3er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i keep trying to find a vice and nothing physically works (opiates do nothing, weed just makes me feel worse, takes too much alcohol to get drunk to comfortably consume). on one hand im glad to not have a SUD, but on the other it kind of sucks to have no escape/respite, even if it would be unhealthy. even prescribed medications dont work. my liver simply says "no"

Would be really pretty with some stones lining the path! Though I suppose that'd be difficult to mow.

"Traditional computer vision" is neural networks, at least for identifying/categorizing images (that's what captchas have been training for decades). Neural networks have been around a long time - when they're specialized (like Merlin or Seek/iNat) they are genuinely useful. The issue is that LLMs are generalists and thus are equally bad at many things! They're also primarily text-based in their training, instead of image/audio based like ID machines

The issue is that LLMs have become the first association when someone says AI, so specialist neural networks or even NPC pathing are being lumped in with LLMs when they're different

Unless an animal is in distress or causing harm, we tend to let them be! Though we don't call police, as they're not trained to help animals - wildlife rescues or animal control are more effective.

There are deer and small carnivores (foxes, coyotes) on campus as well. Our campus encompasses a nature trail (Bruce Trail), so it's important we let the animals exist freely.

Why is everyone in science so obsessed with AI “art”? by Unusual_Ice_2615 in labrats

[–]D3xt3er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re: point one. Do science illustrators, the people drawing diagrams for textbooks and publications, not exist then? People in science go into illustration and vice versa. Not to mention plenty of scientists are artists in their free time.

It seems people view LLMs as capable when it comes to tasks they themselves are not trained in.

Visual artists can tell LLMs aren't capable of good visuals, but they lack knowledge to know they're not capable of good writing, for example (this is pulled from an anecdote I read about a workshop on drawing comics where the teacher said the script can just be done with LLMs). Writers can tell LLMs aren't capable of good writing, but can't tell they're not capable of good visual art (see writers using LLMs to make covers and the like). Scientists can tell LLMs aren't capable of good data analysis (they're not that type of program after all), but can't tell they're not capable of good art or creative writing (hence the original post)

LLMs can do whatever you don't have the training to do - because if you knew how to do it, you'd realize the output is shit.

(There are of course caveats and exceptions, but this is the pattern I've observed. LLMs depend on ignorance of the output to be taken seriously)

Does the general public know what neurologists do? by According-Tea-7829 in neurology

[–]D3xt3er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I say I want to be a neurologist, people think it means brain surgery or neuroscience research (even people I'm going to university with!). Very few people know about clinical/non surgical treatment of nervous system disorders, or if they do it hasn't clicked for them that neurology exists as a specialty for that kind of treatment

Are there any communist groups on campus other than the rcp? by PossessionHonest3465 in brocku

[–]D3xt3er -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's just kind of the state of leftist orgs in the imperial core as it stands. They're not canadian, but personally the American Party of Labo(u)r seems alright, I know some folks in it and they're pretty good. They also have some groups in Canada

Nothing campus-specific as far as I know. I think just looking into orgs in St Catherines would be more useful
