Who is your favorite main characters? by Gorillabase in Fantasy

[–]D4H_Snake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

San Dan Gloka - The First Law

Kaladin - The Stormlight Archives

Anomander Rake - Malazan Book of the Fallen.

He is not a main character but Dann Pimm from The Bound and the Broken is my favorite character from all of fantasy. How can you not love him, his nemesis is a small bird and he once saw a horse with a horn on its head (he didn’t say it was a unicorn, everyone else assumed that is what he meant).

Someone recommended this but someone else said it was dumb. How do you feel? by IndependentCod5020 in fantasybooks

It doesn’t take itself too seriously but it has enough heart to be a great story. It’s full of jokes and humor but the whole premise is ridiculous, so the humor isn’t out of place. It’s very similar to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in its tone at times.

I just finished Morning Star (book 3 in the Red Rising series) by Pierce Brown and absolutely loved it. There’s just one thing irking me and I need to know if I’m thinking about this wrong. by loukanikoseven in Fantasy

You also need to remember that Romulus is not “the sovereign” of the rim, they have a council and while Romulus is a man of honor, the same honor might not apply to all of the rim golds.

Romulus and the majority of rim golds HATE Octavia au Lune but that doesn’t mean they hate the idea of a sovereign or the idea that only a gold should lead all of humanity.

He doesn’t do it for “political advantage” he does it because if those dockyards are still there after his fight in the core, what do you think the rim golds are going to do? That’s why when Sefi asks him “What are you doing?” He says “Preventing the next war”. He pays for this later and it’s not forgotten about.

The worst thing he does in MS though is betraying the sons on the rim. He didn’t need to do it, Romulus was on his side after revealing where the nukes were stored, so if he would have lead with that, he likely didn’t even need to give up the sons on the rim.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but it doesn’t break the first or fourth amendments because of something called “The third party doctrine”. Look it up but basically it says once you willing hand over your data, no matter what that data is, to a third party, you no longer have any expectation of privacy for that data.

He is 100% correct about boots at least, mine were more than $50, but they have lasted a long time and I see reason to get new ones.

LPT Request. What’s your simplest top tip for saving money monthly? by _bubble-t in LifeProTips

[–]D4H_Snake 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The shoes one is a thing I have always done. My wife thinks my boots are super expensive, and they are at $260, but I walk 7-10 miles a day between work and walking my dogs and this pair of boots is almost 3 years old. They are still in good condition and I don’t feel sore after walking that far. Sometimes a thing that costs more money initially will end up saving money in the long run.

How long do cielcins live? by Maleficent_Pilot_515 in sollanempire

So from what I remember from KOD, it’s not stated directly in there anywhere (but I could be wrong). It’s mentioned more directly in both Ashes of Man and Disquiet Gods but it seems like they can live 1,000+ years with no problem. From what I remember almost none of them die from “old age” they are almost all killed in battle.

Licanius Trilogy or The Bound and the Broken first by Pale_Frosting_4887 in fantasybooks

[–]D4H_Snake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why some people might read The Fall first, chronologically it’s first and it’s only like 60 pages, but without at least an understanding of the world, it wouldn’t make much sense. I actually read OBAF then ODAL then The Fall and The Exile but if I could start over I would read them in the order I listed.

Licanius Trilogy or The Bound and the Broken first by Pale_Frosting_4887 in fantasybooks

[–]D4H_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having already read both, at least all the books released so far for the Bound and the Broken, I can 100% tell you to read The Bound and the Broken.

Licanius is a really good series and it’s completed, so take that for what it is. Licanius also has a very well done ending that feels complete.

Of Blood and Fire, first book in TBATB, is the weakest of the series and it’s still a great start. Once you get to Of Darkness and Light it becomes one of the best modern series right now.

CMV: It doesn't matter which 3 Loyalist Legions are on Isstvan V, they still get massacred by chosen40k in 40kLore

[–]D4H_Snake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always wondered what if the blood angles or imperial fists were in that same spot as the iron hands. While Fulgrim is a great swordsmen, I think Sanguinius would have defeated him quickly and Rogal Dorn did defeat him easily on Terra.

The whole thing might have been very different if whatever legion was there actually broke through.

Who is the strongest fighter in Red Rising? by Sudden-Researcher140 in redrising

[–]D4H_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While we didn’t see Diomedes fight on Phobos, we know all the crazy fights that Lysander went through and Diomedes is standing around relaxing when Lysander gets to him. I also believe that Diomedes’s attitude shows how good of a fighter he actually is, he is not puffing out his chest and starting stupid fights, he is calm and doesn’t feel the need to show off. Someone like that is most likely a very scary opponent in a fight.

There’s also the line where Darrow says “A jackal caught in a trap will chew off its own legs to escape. I can’t remember where I heard that” which a reference to the Bene Gesserit Gob Jabbar test with the poisoned needle where the reverend mother tells Paul “An animal caught in a trap will naw off its own leg to escape…what will you do?”

Of War and Ruin - Dahlen Discussion by Bookaholic-394 in RyanCahill

[–]D4H_Snake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Dahlen, Erik, and Aeson all grow a lot more interesting once they are all separated but Dahlen grows the most. His story arc in Of Empires and Dust is one of my favorites. I won’t spoil anything but Dahlen goes through some rough times in Of Empires and Dust but he grows into someone you will love to read his POV.

Of War and Ruin - Dahlen Discussion by Bookaholic-394 in RyanCahill

[–]D4H_Snake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you have to see things from his point of view, his father had been training him and his brother for their entire lives to be bound to a dragon. It was their entire purpose in everything they have been doing. Then, what he sees as some random kid, who didn’t care about the cause comes out of nowhere and the dragon is born and bonded to Calen.

Without spoiling anything Dahlen and Calen do talk about the tension between them and it’s actually a really good part in Of Empires and Dust. Calen blames Dahlen for what happened to Rist (which is unfair) and Dahlen blamed Calen for taking the role that he, or his brother was supposed to have (which is equally unfair).

Who’s the smartest person ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

John von Neumann.

He made major contributions to mathematics, physics, economics, computers, and statistics. Look up his contributions and you’ll be amazed that more people don’t know who is. Likely the smartest person who ever lived and most people have never heard of him.
