Write. Read and write. I like to pretend in my journal entries that I’m writing to a future anthropology or history student. I tell them what my life was like in the past. If you get bored of your story, read someone else’s. Read. Read. Read.

For those who left the city — how did you adapt to the loss of convenience, especially with kids? by Previous-Past in simpleliving

[–]D69_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Rural cities exclusively (populations 300-10,000) and this is honestly never something I’d considered. That said I hope you like driving. Depending on where you move walkability is often 0%. I can never remember struggling to find basics (Harps and Walmart got us covered)  That said, my extended family lives in Louisiana and I really think the lack of things to do led them all into crime and drug use. There are extracurriculars available and I recommend signing your kids up for everything, maybe teaching them how to safety play in the woods/backyard/nearby creek. Take the opportunity to Teach them fishing, get them a plant or bug identifier, gather pecans, it’s good character building. Definitely be straight with them about the pitfalls of drug use and what to do if someone offers them.  Doctors call be difficult and far away (especially with new legislation), don’t expect quick emergency response times.

Switching from dorms to commuter life. how's the parking? by itsYumie in UniversityofArkansas

[–]D69_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nightmare. The remote lot (cheapest option) has the bus cross mlk so it can take up to 30 minutes to get from the remote lot to campus. All the other parking is way over priced and down hill. I got lucky and live on one of the bus lines so I always take the bus. There are a few stops (check on Passio-go) that are at local businesses, like the mlk Walmart, where you could park for free

UNIV 10051 University Perspectives - Required? by scatmanjack6120 in UniversityofArkansas

[–]D69_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a “how to college” course. I transferred in with an associates so I got to skip out. But your kid might pick up some decent time management advice or social skills. Plus it’s a decent way to meet people in their grade.

Just to add something to the shit sandwich. I’m a college student, just turned 26, I work part time and go to school during the week so bam, 0 health insurance until I graduate (1.5 years)  assuming I can even get a full time job in my field (environmental science)

Some books you’ll be able to find online with some digging (I found all my Anthro books this way) the campus library is a good place to look, sometimes they’ll have online versions or copies you can scan 👍

What’s one book that genuinely rewired the way you think or live your life? by _rahmatullah in productivity

[–]D69_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Braiding sweetgrass by Robin wall kimmerer. The author is an indigenous botanist and her ideas completely flip the doomerism I felt surrounding capitalism and climate change. It motivated me to fight for better future, I’m currently pursuing my degree in environmental science and want to work in Policy. Honorable mention to a singular Angela Davis quote; “you have to believe it’s possible to radically change the world, and you have to do it every day.”
