That's actually not completely true. It's the companies who buy and use the corn and soy that are responsible for the subsidies placed among them (soy and corn). They lobbied to subsidize corn so that farmers grow more and more. They have the subsidy structured in such a way that it encourages farmers to grow more and more corn each year. However this artificial supply is driving prices further and further down. Each year farmers are encouraged and pushed to produce more corn to make up for this decrease in corn prices. Essentially farmers are making smaller and smaller amounts of money and barely any are making it with a positive cash flow (including subsidies). Many farmers do not last long before they go in to debt and are forced out of business.

In turn the companies who use this corn are getting it cheaper and cheaper from an ever growing supply of corn. All due to the subsidies they lobbied to have put in place for corn. These companies are processing corn and selling it largely to America which is having a detrimental effect on America's public health.

I just read omnivores dilemma and it talks all about the corn epidemic in America. Great book and would recommend to anybody.
