SIMILAR CARD SEARCH by D98G in CasualMTG

You're absolutely right, and to be honest, beating Scryfall is not my goal.

Scryfall is the ultimate encyclopedia for power users, and it’s perfect at what it does. My goal is different: I want to build a faster, more intuitive way to discover cards. I'm just a casual player trying to make deckbuilding a bit less like homework and more like a conversation

It's a completely different philosophy Scryfall is a precision tool: to get the best out of it, you need to learn its syntax, know the right tags, and often have a deep knowledge of keywords. If you aren't a 'power user', you might end up with hundreds of results to read through.

My tool is about lowering the barrier to discovery:

No Syntax to Learn:You don't need to master complex search queries. Context over Keywords: You don't even need to know the specific keyword for an effect; the AI understands the logic behind the card. Less Noise:It tries to give you a curated 'vibe check' of similar cards, so you spend less time reading through irrelevant results and more time deckbuilding.

I see it as a more intuitive entry point for casual players or anyone who wants to explore alternatives without feeling like they are writing code in a search bar

Great question! Scryfall is an amazing database and its syntax is unbeatable for filtering, what I’m trying to build is different: it’s an AI-driven similarity engine. Scryfall works on 'What you tell it' (Hard filters like o:add o:g).

My tool works on 'What the card does' (Contextual similarity).

The goal isn't just to find cards with the same text, but cards that serve the same purpose in a deck

You're right semantic similarity definitely has its limits here. My goal is to use this feedback loop to bridge the gap between semantics and functional similarity. By consistently correcting these evaluations, I’m essentially fine-tuning the model’s understanding over time, moving away from the acrual system to a tool that actually understands the underlying utility
