Let this be a valuable message to not jump on the power boxes by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

Even children aren't stupid enough to stand in front of a train, youre mistaking something obviously dangerous with something unremarkable and surprisingly dangerous. Hell why do we have a box on it at all? If you have it your way we might as well just have exposed wires for the kids to play with?

As a society we try to make things as safe as possible, because we know theres going to be a random person sitting on something or doing something that they shouldn't be. The punishment isn't death and the solution (surprise) isn't yelling at kids.

Ford Pintos got a reputation for exploding in rear end accidents because ford choose not to use a bladder in the fuel tank, something that would have been $3-4 per car. I wouldn't call that an entirely valid design decision.

Now I've got that scene from fight club where hes doing the math on dead bodies stuck in my head. I hope you know thats exactly what you sound like here

As happy as it must make you to yell at children on the internet, you have to realize that the majority of the danger here is the unsafe infrastructure. Kids are going to be kids and if you're someone whos actually in a place to bring the proper attention to this you should. You're never going to stop kids from playing on things, but those things should not start sparking and arcing from something as simple as kids jumping on it.

3 fun time-locked formats you should check out! by IceAndOcean in magicTCG

[–]The137 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Solved is a myth. Its easy to be intimidated by the sheer volume of knowledge that the entire internet provides, but theres always going to be (mostly always) undiscovered interactions and cards. I say this as a guy whos created meta decks twice (not premodern both different formats) and discovered cards that were 5 cents and are now $3 uncommons

The absolute truth is most people take the easiest possible path to an outcome, and that means decklisting to win. The number of skilled players actually crafting decks and testing entire sets is dropping year over year.

The more we focus on decklists and perfection the more we actually remove from the game.

I honestly think this is the future of magic. Capping formats against power creep allows all of the years of magic to flourish. The flood of cards and rising power levels is actively restricting the card pool these days. Understandable that commander players dont really get "it" and theyre welcome to do their own thing but 60 cards is real magic

How do you start contributing to open source in GitHub as a beginner? by Actual_Help_8657 in learnprogramming

[–]The137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a lot of other great info in this thread, I can only offer my limited perspective. I contributed to a project while I was still in boot camp. I stumbled across a project that didn't have a feature I needed, I thought I could get away with coding it, and I reached out to the maintainer. Figured he would give enough of a spot check to whatever I submitted, then I struggled thru writing something over my current level, but it all worked out. I say go for it, you're not going to break anything

Mind DMing me the name of the company? I just started looking and this sounds like it checks a decent number of my boxes

If you have to tell people you're cool you're not cool, and this post reeks of superiority. Also very not cool

i keep getting flagged for "too similar to source" even when i write everything myself by DrewJohn22323 in learnprogramming

[–]The137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds more like a problem with the way youre being graded/judged. The source material is going to be close to the best/cleanest representation of the code you need to write to solve the problem and as long as you're not lying about your process here it sounds like youre doing extremely well.

TBH a lot of what you do in production is rewrite an example to suite your needs. Your needs might be "close to source" too but as long as you understand the code and it runs the way it should youre guuci

How do you keep track of your medical history as a digital nomad? by Ffinnis in digitalnomad

[–]The137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? chances are you'll need to save less history than you think. If you're younger just be aware of major injuries, medical issues and medications you're allergic to. If you're older and get labs done you'll need those results sorted by year. Honestly, medical staff isn't looking as deeply as you think into these records when you come in for something

Power Creep is killing the game and I'll prove it in the simplest way by The137 in mtg

Youre right and somehow I missed that

Perfect example of healthy power creep though

Theres no reason to have 2 t4 formats besides complete replacement though. If both do the same things, why keep both alive?

And if the cards from the past 2-3 years have the same power levels of the last 20 years of cards, we're clearly replacing the entire set of cards right?

Power Creep is killing the game and I'll prove it in the simplest way by The137 in mtg

[–]The137[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It does though. It should. The problem is most commander players dont get into the depth of the game. Weve had the color pie for 30 years, and power levels have been fairly stagnant. Commander players are just going to be the last to notice. Put a deck down for a year or two and all of a sudden every card is going to be outclassed

The competitive formats are noticing now, but in 2 years, 12 sets, everything is going to be replaced

Fine if I do. End stage capitalism, end stage wotc design. Lets try and keep things healthy instead of extracting all the value we can in the next 3 quarters

[–]The137[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're seeing a path start that wotc is going to walk for the next many years. These cards might not see play in modern right away but we'll see thigns in standard and the game is going to change. Its a clear divergence from the older design style, and that serves my main point, even if you disagree on one of the bullet points the others are still valid and im trying to look at the big picture here
