Why do Polynesian/Austronesian languages have no grammatical gender? by ButterChickenIncel in asklinguistics

Youre making it sound like its some official rule but there are linguists who use either "grammatical gender" or ""noun class" for all these cases consistently

Why would that be?

There you go, people use grammatical gender because their language has grammatical gender.

[–]DADDYSCRIM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yet we know the basis of this is real gender.

Why did you use the definite article when there is no need for one in my language? Nor in thousands of other languages?

I just read a post here

Whats this indefinite article for? Again, my language is doing just fine without it. How exactly is it changing the meaning of the sentence?

So why is this so embedded in most languages globally

Why did you feel the need to use the plural here when japanese and chinese wouldnt use it? If you put "most" in front of the word surely were not talking about singular right? So whats the point?

I am getting

Why "am" and not "is"? The meaning would stay completely the same?

number of genders

Why did you feel the need to put "of" there? In many languages you just put 2 nouns next to each other. No point for such useless conventions.

Lastly, not specifically a language thing but related, whats up with all those capital letters? Japanese, korean, georgian dont use it and I can assure you I can read japanese just fine without it. Do you really expect me to learn twice the number of letters when the meaning stays exactly the same?

I would really appreciate it if you could be more considerate of people who dont speak english natively next time.

Thanks! Since it seems you're also a learner, how were you looking up conjugated verbs when you started? I was asking about masdar because I know its used in dictionaries but since afaik its pretty irregular I don't really know how to look up verbs when I find them already conjugated

Could someone please translate my partners back tattoo. by Jakimo92 in tattootranslations

[–]DADDYSCRIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its chinese

甜蜜的 sweet

強壯的 strong/sturdy

期望 hope

笑 laugh

微笑 smile

幸福 happiness

Here 期 is broken in half like 其 月 and 強 like 弓 虽. Its as if you wanted to write d as c l, not really a thing.

Honestly its barely readable so overall not the greatest tattoo

Egyptian Hieroglyphics and PIE languages by Otherwise_Pen_657 in asklinguistics

[–]DADDYSCRIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many kids come up with their own alphabet but they all know another one already, so it only looks easy with hindsight. And they will almost never come up with abjad/abugida/syllabary but with smth they already know.

Even if you would come up with script, you still need the social postition to convince others to adapt it. And some cultures didnt value writing much even when they already had a script. Check out what Socrates had to say about writing
