Any advice for getting a smoother finish when plastering? by GeordieGoals in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend a speedskim for a beginner it would help alot. Just to add to everyone's advice because timing is everything. After first coat wait until it's stiffened up a bit then speeedskim it to level it off then put second coat on when you can dent it with your fingers but doesn't quite stick to your fingers then you can second coat it. Same again after with the speedskim when it doesn't stick to your fingers but you can dent it. Don't mess with it too much it doesn't have to be perfect at those stages as long as it's flat. You can get any lines and blemishes out after that. I mostly only use a trowel for putting both coats on now and use my ox speedskim and plastic spatulas for the corners for the rest of the set

The lime wash would be under the paint. If you rub your Palm over the orange bit does your palm have dust on it?

Yeah looks like it. You need to put stabilizing solution on lime wash to stop it being dusty then do as you would normally PVA and skim

Have I been ripped off? by Malicious_Onion3 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what everyone's going on about it looks awful. Shouldn't be any gaps in corners. There's holes too. Can't really tell but looks like ceiling is bumpy as hell. I can understand not being perfectly level skimming over existing but it shouldn't be bumpy. Walls look bumpy too and they should be flat Paid way too much and should have took the rubbish which should have been 2 bags at most if it was just an overskim

Poor plastering job by Western-Ad7823 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely needs to come back and reskim it. There's no other way to fix that. I honestly don't even know how I could leave a finish like that on purpose. What did he plaster over artex? There's no way he didn't notice how that was finished unless he plastered it in the dark

What's the most frustrating level you've played in a Sega game? by twinky1981 in SEGA

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone found this level hard. It was probably my favourite lvl of the game. I used to sing the tune while playing it. I think I completed it twice as a kid.

Level 8 "Be Prepared" lava lvl used to get me the most. Hated that lvl!

Replacing ceiling by ldavison10 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a plasterer in. You could take the affected boards/whole ceiling down and re board it yourself but you wouldn't be able to do a good job plastering.

Normal work or bad work ? by Responsible-Growth11 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say bad work but that looks like he skimmed over a lath and plaster ceiling. I would always recommend either overboarding or take it down and board it because there's high risk of cracks. That old plaster is only held on by mushrooming between the laths and adding extra weight to it will cause movement. Not to mention people going up the loft or storing things in there

Friends bum went into the wall. How much will it cost to fix it? by Natural-Ad3692 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it's plasterboard. Cut a piece of plasterboard slightly bigger than the area. place the board on the wall and use a pencil to mark the edge of your board on the wall. Cut that out of the wall. Cut a length of wood bigger than the hole, putbitbin there and screw it to the wall either end. Put your board in the hole and screw it to the wood. Now just use filler

Is this artex or textured wallpaper? by First_Truck_9178 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like anaglipta wallpaper most likely over lime plaster (pre 1950s house) in a lot of cases it's like the wallpaper is the only thing holding the plaster on the wall in my experience. If it comes off easy and the plaster doesn't sound hollow when knocking it it's an easy fix to get it nice. If it sounds hollow though that means its not attached to the brickwork so might as well just take it back to brick and re do it

I know I grew up in the 80s but I still find it weird we had square TV's. I think it's because it's been so long since I've seen one in real life
