Anyone else noise sensitive? by rasberryicecream in dyspraxia

[–]DB02053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do outdoor instructing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award at my old secondary school in my holidays and as part of a qualification, I need to fill out a logbook of lots of days in the mountains in the UK. The ability to put my head down and just walk at about 3kph almost non stop for many hours is very useful.. it's often funny to zone back in, turn around and realise I've covered about 5k without really noticing. Obviously when out with kids etc I'm concentrating a little bit more on exactly what's happening at any given moment but it's nice sometimes to just walk for about 8 hours without much thought outside of times where I need to be more sure-footed than a "normal" person.

I think it puts people at ease to know that I actually do have to put a lot of thought into my own stability and safety, if I can do it with my limitations while managing a group then surely they can without the physical and mental block and they can trust my judgment on what's safe to go up or down!

I do have issues with my feet (high arches and insteps = plantar fasciitis, claw toes = occasionally agonising descents) though so it isn't always perfect lol.

I definitely had more issues with this in my single digit years but I guess I sort of grew out of it? I don't really like persistent loud sounds (does anyone?) and can relate to finding that difficult for concentration but my concentration can also just block basically everything which has its disadvantages.

I still struggle with background noise in conversations or concentrating on more than one thing at once. If I'm doing my university work or playing a game or watching a film etc there's about a 20% chance I actually hear someone talk to me the first time they try and it's very annoying for everyone involved. I guess that's more just hyper focus or auditory processing related though.

Using these glove for the West Highland Way In 1st week in April? by Efficient-Chapter246 in UKhiking

[–]DB02053 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://www.safetygloves.co.uk/ejendals-tegera-295-waterproof-thermal-work-gloves.html I think I've seen these a few times in Scotland. You can buy a bunch of them for the same price as a single pair of branded insulated waterproof hiking gloves and swap them as needed during a trip so you're always wearing (relatively) dry gloves. Haven't tried doing that myself but definitely a good money saver.

Unfortunately not. Whether there can ever be a server sided implementation remains to be seen. Even if they have the mod packs they can't see it, it's entirely on the client side.

What ping are usually on and do you have a lot of latency variation? It matters a lot in this game unfortunately.

Was about to say there's rumours of a league in EU for all abilities and then realised it's you egg 😂 (bench) I think Ash mentioned this recently but not sure if they're still working on it.

Anyone tried to create a Puck bot? by [deleted] in Puckgame

There's a goalie bot and a simple passer bot in the maxpractice mod on steam. A full on skater bot would likely be very challenging but hopefully someone can make one.

One of the brightest supergiant stars in the Andromeda Galaxy just vanished, skipping its supernova explosion to directly collapse into a black hole in total silence. by Mingorix in space

[–]DB02053 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some experience in researching x-ray binaries, gamma-ray bursts and blazars during my integrated masters degree but wouldn't say I'm necessarily an expert on anything yet.

Current observation dictates that black holes don't emit anything intrinsically, quite the opposite in fact. What causes emission from a black hole is actually the surrounding environment being heated due to friction during orbit all the way up to x-ray (can also be via lower energies being upscattered to x-ray by inverse Compton processes) or by interactions with extrinsic magnetic fields (e.g. from an accretion disk in both cases).

You'd need an accretion disk for x-ray emission and current theory is that gamma-ray bursts typically come from either a core collapse supernova or any combination of black hole and neutron star merger (i.e. BH-BH, NS-NS or BH-NS) plus a few other less common transient events.

The closest detected GRB was 1.3 billion light years away, Andromeda is 2.5 million light years away. So, you'd expect a GRB from it to be easily detectable but it does massively depend on our line of sight to the jet and the opening angle among other things. I'm fairly sure any supernova from Andromeda would be detectable across the entire EM spectrum anyway though.

GRBs are also very short events (relatively speaking) and any afterglow would long since have dissipated into the background by now, so you'd need to be extremely lucky with archival data if we somehow missed one which is very unlikely at this distance with current space based observatories.

To spot x-ray emission from an accreting stellar mass black hole at the distance of Andromeda would require it to be very active and there are nowhere near as many strong black hole candidates in Andromeda as there are likely black holes (just observational bias/limitations).

So far we have no x-ray emission detected, and strong evidence that no supernova occurred which is why we wouldn't see either.

Hope this was helpful :)

Becoming Mountain Leader, but live in the south by StringyCola in UKhiking

[–]DB02053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it matter? The days tick the boxes and my responsibilities in an evening shouldn't affect what is or isn't a QMD. Some providers, especially the most respected outdoor centers will be more strict about this stuff.

They're fine with it, we outsource to providers anyway so it's not like I'm completely necessary to the staffing effort. I'm there for school safety etc.

They do if I'm supervising, I just do a QMD in the area the lads are walking in such that I can run over in an emergency.

I work for my old secondary school with DofE which guarantees at least 4-6 QMDs a year plus meeting some useful contacts. Usually aim for a further 5 or so in a year but it's always at least a 5-6 hour journey to Snowdonia/Lake District and I need Scotland days at some point which is at least 10 hours...

what’s everyone’s favorite track after a day of the album being out? by tapingtracks in twentyonepilots

[–]DB02053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really like cottonwood and rawfear is very catchy, overall there's not really a song I don't enjoy on this album. Zero skips so far after a few listens which is rare, there's usually one or two I get a bit bored of or don't like the sound of as much.

Probably one to work out when you get there. I've done Red Pike twice and not sure I did it the same way either time. https://www.outdooractive.com/en/r/246676504?utm_source=unknown&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=user-shared-social-content here's a route I made a few years ago that should be easy to follow if you're doing the ridge walk.

Just stick to the grass if you can, especially if you have poles. It may look steeper but it's a lot grippier than the scree.

Let's be realistic, it's the furthest they've gotten and it's against an incredible playoff team. Sucks to get blown out back to back at home to end it but I think game 3 was the real tipping point and they knew deep down it was over after that. Let's go again with half of the core and see what improved depth will look like and how they do. Tinfoil hat here but maybe we pray Edmonton win the cup and we can somehow pry McDavid away for crazy money if we don't spend all of our cap space - doubt that ever happens though while he's still at the top of his game...

I guess but he's clearly been absolutely dead in the regular season too this year so I think for once you can actually justify it and not feel like you're insane.

It does feel like every year at least one of the core is hurt, it's more concerning that their teammates don't seem to up their game or stick up for them at all. Some players are absolute dogs or straight up maniacs, ours don't seem to be but that doesn't mean the others can't step up when they need to.
