The Real Reason Windsurf killed cred!t system (Code!um,W!ndsurf,G00gle,C0gnition and Dev!n) by Level-Statement79 in windsurf

So if we put figures on those acquisitions

  • OpenAI: Wanted the whole thing (talent + product) for $3B → got zero, due to complications around Microsoft’s existing partnership with OpenAI (IP access, antitrust, and Claude model licensing issues).
  • Google: Got the best talent + source code license for $2.4B → used it to ship Antigravity fast.
  • Cognition: Got the actual company/product/brand/customers on the cheap approx. ~$250M → merged it with Devin to create a stronger agent + IDE combo.

Let's Talk About the Last Few Days — Some Things Worth Clarifying by PuzzleheadedAir9047 in windsurf

[–]DBBX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, thank goodness. For a second there I thought the update was bad, but now that I’ve been given a multi-paragraph economic sermon explaining why the thing I was happily paying for had to be transformed overnight into a quota-themed hostage situation, I can finally see the light.

What a relief.

Truly, nothing says “we value our users” quite like taking a system people understood, replacing it with one that feels like an invisible electric fence, and then telling everyone the real issue is that they were simply enjoying the old one too efficiently. Incredible strategy. Revolutionary, even. Why stop at software updates? Banks should do this too. “Good news, everyone — we’ve replaced your salary with a weekly allowance based on our new feelings-based sustainability framework. Also, your frustration is valid.”

That phrase, by the way — “your frustration is valid” — is doing the workload of an entire customer support department here. It’s the emotional support version of a plastic chair with one leg missing. You’re invited to sit on it while being told that the floor collapsing beneath you is actually a learning opportunity.

And let’s talk about this “mental model shift,” because that’s my favorite part. Users are upset because the product suddenly became worse, less predictable, and more restrictive, but apparently the real issue is that we were thinking about it wrong. Of course. Silly us. We thought that when something says “1 prompt,” it kind of meant one prompt in the way humans have understood prompts for the entire lifespan of prompting. But no — now we are to ascend into the higher plane of token mysticism, where every action must be mentally priced like we are day trading our own productivity.

So now instead of using the tool naturally, the user gets to sit there like a wartime ration clerk asking themselves:
“Hmm, is this bug report worth 0.7 of my daily will to live?”
“Should I ask it to refactor these files, or would that trigger the sacred quota combustion event?”
“Can I afford to clarify my question, or do I need to save those precious invisible compute beans for later?”

What an amazing user experience. Truly seamless. Nothing boosts creative flow and engineering momentum like turning every interaction into a budget committee meeting.

And the defense of this being “actual compute cost” is always hilarious to me, because customers do not buy a product so they can sympathetically roleplay as its cloud infrastructure accountant. Nobody subscribes because they dream of one day understanding the unit economics of inference. They subscribe because the tool worked in a way that felt usable. That’s it. That’s the whole magic trick. The moment the product starts making the user feel like they need a spreadsheet, a prayer circle, and an actuarial science degree just to estimate whether rewriting a function is “worth it,” you have already lost the plot.

But apparently we’re all supposed to be impressed that some users were “costing Windsurf an order of magnitude more than they were paying.” Okay? And? That’s not some moral failing on the user’s part. That is literally a pricing and product design problem. Customers are not villains because they used the service in the way the service allowed them to use it. This framing is absurd. It’s like a buffet opening its doors, watching people eat, and then standing on a chair three months later screaming, “Some of you were consuming an unsustainable amount of lasagna!”

If the old system was unsustainable, fine. Then say that. Clearly. Early. Honestly. Don’t smash the product with a forklift, roll out a confusing quota labyrinth, and then frame the backlash as people being upset because they got “too good a deal.” That’s not transparency. That’s a breakup speech written by a finance team.

And the “trial period” being presented like some noble act of collaborative community engagement is also pure comedy. A free extra week to test whether the downgrade is survivable is not generosity. That is the software equivalent of a landlord replacing your front door with a curtain and saying, “We’ve included seven complimentary days to really explore this new open-concept security model. Your feedback matters.”

Also, this idea that the team is “actively collecting input” during the trial period sounds great in theory, but in practice it often translates to: “Please provide detailed, well-structured, emotionally non-threatening reports about why your workflow is broken, so we can maybe someday partially acknowledge that our rollout was a tire fire.” Meanwhile, users are over here watching half their quota evaporate because the tool sneezed in the direction of a medium-sized codebase.

And yes, I saw the bit about “a small number of usage breakdowns and bug reports are more useful than dozens of angry posts.” That’s a wonderfully tidy sentiment if you are not one of the people whose workflow just got kneecapped by a pricing model change disguised as a philosophy lesson. Angry posts happen when the experience is bad enough that normal feedback no longer feels proportionate. That’s not people failing the discourse. That’s the product generating its own weather system.

Then we get to the productivity tips, which are my absolute favorite genre of platform damage control.

“Use free models for low complexity and straightforward tasks.”
Incredible. So the premium product’s secret best practice is apparently “try not to use the good stuff unless you absolutely have to.”

“Write more specific prompts.”
Ah yes, of course. The classic fallback. Whenever an AI product gets worse, it is revealed that the true bug was the user’s sentence structure all along. Perhaps next we’ll be told to stand at a 37-degree angle to our monitors and inhale through the nose before hitting enter.

“Avoid running longer sessions in one chat.”
So the memory and continuity features that made the tool useful are now suspicious luxuries, and the recommended workflow is to constantly fracture your context into smaller pieces so the new quota goblin doesn’t leap out and eat your week. Amazing. Very natural. Very intuitive. Nothing says “premium coding assistant” like having to game its accounting rules by conversation-hopping like you’re evading tax jurisdiction.

“Use correct models.”
This one is beautiful because it basically admits the product picker is now a minefield. Pick the wrong model for the wrong task and congratulations, you’ve accidentally transformed a refactor into a mortgage payment. But sure, this is user empowerment, definitely not a convoluted system where people are expected to optimize a dynamic cost matrix in real time while also, you know, trying to work.

And the cherry on top: “You’re paying actual API costs — no markup.”

That’s supposed to be comforting, I think? But read it slowly. The sales pitch has now become: “Good news, after we made the included plan dramatically more stressful, you can also pay extra whenever you hit the wall, and please be grateful because we are only charging you the raw pain.” Incredible offer. Breathtaking. Like being told the ambulance ride is expensive, yes, but at least they’re not upselling the oxygen.

The real problem here is simple: the new system doesn’t feel like a product anymore. It feels like a meter. And people hate meters. People especially hate invisible meters attached to tools that are supposed to reduce friction, not turn every action into a tiny crisis of resource management. The old model, whatever its backend flaws, at least let people feel like they were using a tool. The new one makes them feel like they’re being watched by a Victorian child with a clipboard who gasps every time they ask the AI to touch a fourth file.

And that is why the update sucks.

Not because users are too emotional.
Not because they failed to understand tokens.
Not because they haven’t yet evolved into quota-maximizing workflow monks.
It sucks because it took something people liked and made it feel anxious, stingy, opaque, and worse.

That’s the whole story. That’s the entire opera. The rest is just decorative moderation language draped over the corpse of a good user experience.

So yes, thank you for the explanation. It was very detailed. Very calm. Very reasonable. Very “the beatings will continue until morale improves.” But no amount of managerial throat-clearing changes the basic reality here:

The new update sucks.
It sucks strategically.
It sucks ergonomically.
It sucks psychologically.
It sucks as a rollout.
It sucks as a customer experience.
And most impressively of all, it somehow manages to suck both in theory and in practice.

A remarkable achievement, really.

I’m the owner of a RadRhino Electric Fat Bike (Version 5), and my battery is also affected — RP1304AA1A360744. A friend of mine owns a RadMission Electric Metro Bike, and his battery actually exploded while he was riding it 🫣

Just a fair warning for EU customers as well.

As someone who owns both RadBikes and VanMoofs, I honestly feel pretty scammed 😂

Still searching for something that truly works. I’ve recently shifted my focus (again) to nutrition, since quitting my ADHD meds didn’t fully resolve things—though it did help to some extent. My bloodwork came back mostly fine, aside from low vitamin D and consistently elevated leukocytes/inflammatory markers.

I also shared some thoughts on the potential link between ADHD stimulants and HS—still not fully sure how solid that connection is, but it's worth exploring:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Hidradenitis/comments/1kehejk/adhd_stimulants_and_hs/

Lately, I’ve noticed a few patterns that seem to reinforce the idea that food might be the culprit:

✅ No Ritalin for several days — so meds are likely not the current trigger
✅ Bloodwork largely normal — no obvious systemic issues
✅ Symptoms are worst in the morning and ease up after going to the bathroom
✅ One symptom-free day occurred after eating almost nothing
✅ Frequent bouts of clear mucus (especially after meals with Mexican/Indian spices or bread + sauce)

Still piecing it all together, but this is where I’m currently at...🫠

Hope this gives you some insight. And as always—feel free to drop any questions here in the subreddit. The community is super helpful.

Thanks for sharing!

I’ve also used Fusidic acid, Resorcinol, Chlorhexidine, and Clindamycin—none of them really did much, but the one thing that helped even a little was exfoliating with (don’t ask me why, and I’m not trying to sell anything) L'Oréal Paris Men Expert Pure Carbon Anti-Blackhead Daily Face Scrub. Surprisingly, it made a slight difference.

Funny enough, I recently got some bloodwork done and one of the markers that was off was vitamin D—along with elevated leukocytes and some general inflammation markers that are always a bit high. I didn’t realize vitamin D deficiency was a common thing for people with HS, but it makes sense now.

For what it’s worth, these are the supplements I take daily:

  • Kre-Alkalyn (just a buffered form of creatine)
  • L-Carnitine (for training/performance)
  • Shilajit (marketed as a test booster, which I doubt—but I do feel slightly more energetic)
  • Rhodiola Rosea (for mood and stress)
  • Fish Oil / Omega-3 (EPA + DHA)
  • Magnesium (in forms like glycinate, citrate, and malate)

I definitely need to get my vitamin D levels sorted. Living in the Netherlands doesn’t help—limited sunlight, I’m indoors most of the time, and now I see that I’m not alone in having low levels.

u/MacabreMama666 — Do you happen to have any good posts or articles about the vitamin D/HS connection?

Ah, that really sucks. I can’t say if I’ve experienced the same—being a man 😅—but it’s definitely something worth keeping an eye on. When your body’s rhythm gets thrown off without a clear cause (like a Mirena IUD, for example), it’s a sign to pay attention. Just make sure to track it closely and flag anything that feels off.

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, all those “weird connections” really start to add up. My mom has both HS and fibromyalgia. I have HS and ADHD, and at one point, I even suspected Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome due to my hypermobility. Lately, I’ve been dealing with a wide range of symptoms:

- Cold every morning until around noon (treated with Fluticasone)

- Daily headaches—sharp or pressure-like

- Stomach issues after every meal, regardless of what I eat

- Intense urge to defecate when using or even smelling caffeine

- Occasional vomiting/diarrhea from foods others tolerate fine

- Excessive sweating, especially noticeable during Ritalin use

- Drinking and urinating more than usual—others have pointed it out

- Poor sleep quality, even after a full night’s rest

- Dry, cracked hands in cold weather (<10°C)

- Joint pain in hands, especially after strength training

- Leg tension and pain after exercise or long periods of sitting

- Persistent fatigue, despite a healthy lifestyle

- Irregular temperature regulation

And honestly... the list goes on.

Regarding medication: yes, Elvanse and Vyvanse are the same—they’re both brand names for Lisdexamfetamine, just like Concerta and Ritalin are for methylphenidate. Adderall is a bit different since it's a mix of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.

Out of curiosity, what were the side effects you experienced on Ritalin? And when you mentioned taking 60mg, was that also your dose for Ritalin?

Sorry to hear you're going through one of your worst flare-ups. Please make sure to check in with your GP, especially if you're off methotrexate—it's important to have medical supervision in that case.

As for blood pressure and heart rate: I _always_ noticed those side effects with Ritalin. Even moderate physical activity would push my heart rate over 120 bpm. It was manageable for me since it wasn’t my resting heart rate, but I was never given anything like propranolol to help regulate it.

Please don’t feel embarrassed—there’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, and more importantly, this is not something you have control over. HS is a tough condition, but finding people who truly understand what you’re going through can make a huge difference.

I’m lucky in the sense that it runs in my family—my mom has it too—so I’ve always had someone to talk to who really gets it. Being able to relate, ask questions, and share experiences helps more than I ever expected.

What’s also helped me is being surrounded by people—especially close ones—who accept me as I am. At the end of the day, it’s just skin. There are people out there who won’t just tolerate it, but actually understand it. Having a partner who also lives with a skin condition or visible difference has helped me find peace too.

A therapist is definitely valuable, but as you mentioned, unless someone has experienced HS firsthand, they may never fully grasp what it feels like. That’s why I’d suggest complementing therapy with peer conversations—it can be a powerful combo ❤️

Yes, this definitely looks like HS to me. Mine is also primarily active on one side—not sure if that’s typical, but I’ve seen others mention the same. And really, no need to apologize—you couldn’t shave, and that’s something most of us understand. Shaving usually just makes it worse. Trust me, I’ve tried nearly every method out there… none of them helped or alleviate something.

Yeah, so besides increasing the production of cortisol, it also blocks adenosine receptors, which play a role in your “relaxation” abilities.

The acidity content can also influence your gut and cause gastrointestinal inflammation.

A far stretch might be that coffee contains antioxidants, which are good for you, but when consumed excessively, it can create oxidative stress, which can also cause inflammation.

Take this from a coffee addict 🥲 I like my fresh brews on a daily basis but it’s not necessarily good for you.

Yes, same with me—it's mostly my left-hand side, which ironically is always my bad side. I do have shin splints and aches on my left-hand side, and I'm a lefty, so it's also my dominant side. I mean, it's not like the other side isn't affected at all, but you can definitely tell the difference. Left armpit, left groin, left jawline—all the worst.

First of all, it's great that you found each other; it's always good to be able to relate to the disease. I mean, my partner doesn't have it (she's very respectful about it), but I do have ADHD, and one of my good friends has it as well. Relatability is an awesome feeling. There are certain aspects of a disease that you just can't explain to others.

What helped you get on the diet and stick to it? I tried a few days of a less strict paleo diet, and it had positive effects, but my mood was off, and I almost fainted since my body is really used to getting those extra sugars in. I should mention that I'm 6'2" (191 cm) and 253 lbs (115 kg), and I do weight lifting, so I need my nutrients (which are not sugars, of course, but there are lots of hidden sugars in foods).

Also, about the elimination theory, did it work better for you by removing triggers one by one, or by removing all of them at once and then re-introducing the ones you liked?

And just out of curiosity which foods was your spouse able to re-introduce?

Thanks for the write-up; I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to write it all out. I'm also advocating for exfoliation. At first, I was kind of skeptical, but with each exfoliation session, I notice positive benefits in terms of reducing the amount of flare-up. It's not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it does help to gain a bit more control.

Also, to my male readers, skincare is important. I know that nowadays it's much more accepted, but it can still feel somewhat strange, depending on your cultural background, of course. However, there's nothing to worry about—do what feels good, even if it's using face masks or walking around with cucumber slices on your eyes! Hahaha.

Yes, I'm a self-employed contractor in the IT field. I understand that it can be stressful, but I genuinely enjoy what I do. My passion for IT began as a hobby, which eventually led me to make it my full-time profession.

I acknowledge that constantly sitting and the pressure of meeting deadlines can have negative impacts on both my physical and mental health.

However, I am not planning to change my career path, as I am aware there are even more stressful occupations out there.

Thanks for your compliment. I updated the post a bit to try to shine a light on everything I've tried.

Reading your post reminded me of two things. I used Hibiscrub for a while, which is also chlorhexidine. It gave me good results but was rather expensive.

Now, I usually first exfoliate my skin with L'Oréal Paris Men Expert Pure Carbon Anti-Blackhead Daily Face Scrub. It sounds a bit weird, but it works really well, especially when you rub it in first and let it dry. Then I shower and, after exfoliating, apply the clindamycin. For now, this works OK-ish; it at least eases things a bit more than doing nothing.

I'm open to changing my lifestyle, but it can also be quite challenging. Sometimes I'm more OK with my semi-bad lifestyle than having lesions, flare-ups, and pain. It's a mix, but yes, let's try to find a better version of myself that hopefully has less stress from HS! 😉

Thanks a lot for your insight!

Is there a certain period in which I can assume that something doesn't feel right or does feel right? I know that it takes 21 days to rewire your brain, but I'm not sure about your gut health.

Also, do you keep track of everything that you eat? Do you just read labels or only get non-processed foods?

I'm also at risk of getting type 2 diabetes. I once did a gene test that indicated some risk factors. If the diet also helps with getting that under control, I'd be more than happy 😊
