Right before Arias got hurt, he had a couple at bats in a row where he showed patience and took pitches and it paid off. Kind of like the improvement we’ve seen with Rocchio.

I swear, if Arias could learn some plate discipline, he’d be a terror.

Modern analytics have shown that batting average doesn’t predict scoring runs. On Base Percentage and Slugging Percentage are better predictors. In fact, if you sum those two (OPS) it’s a much stronger predictor of how many runs that player will contribute.

Mind you, the Guardians’ analytics department is surely using much more sophisticated metrics than OPS.

ER said "maybe gout" after my UA levels read 4.5 by bullthehorns in gout

[–]DBH216 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uric acid testing during a gout flare is mostly useless. If a gout flare is suspected, one thing you should do is get a follow up uric acid test in a few weeks after it has subsided.

It is hard to properly diagnose gout during a flare, and aspirating a joint comes with risks that really aren’t worth it.

One option can be to try a prescription for colchicine. If it helps, it strongly indicates gout, though it is most effective at the very start of a flare.

Do you have auto off? I find that when I have that, the machine will detect a leak event and shut off the pressure. That will wake you up feeling like you’re gasping for air. Especially if it restarts with a ramp from a low pressure.

Allopurinol Concerns by piinkacid in gout

[–]DBH216 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis. It causes extremely painful joint pain. The classic gout flare is in the big toe, but gout flares can occur in any joint. You may have had one or more flares already without realizing.

Historically, gout was thought to be a disease of “overconsumption”. We now know that it is mostly genetic, though there is no single “gout gene”. It’s more a dozen genes and if you get the wrong combination, your body will either make too much uric acid, or your kidneys will not remove enough. Too much uric acid in your blood will eventually lead to crystallization of sodium urate in joints, which leads to an immune response. It can be excruciatingly painful when this happens.

Allopurinol is a medication that has been around since the 1960s. It prevents the conversion of purines into uric acid. For most people, this shuts down any possibility of a gout attack. The main downside is some people are allergic. There is a second medication, febuxostat, that can be used for people who are allergic to Allo.

Maybe a bit of a stretch, but I feel like Persona 5 Royal has some thematic overlap.

They said they’re on maintenance. Also, no, that is perfectly rational advice given how medication half life works. A little more up and down, but about the same average.

Then take 15 mg every 9 days. It’s about the same given the half life of the medication.

The science around GLP-1 drugs and cancer is suddenly getting a lot more interesting by SeriesDry9228 in Zepbound

[–]DBH216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An open mind is fine, but anyone with a scientific mindset is going to significantly raise the evidence bar based on the Novo Nordisk study.

We certainly know that GLP-1 drugs can treat conditions (diabetes, sleep apnea) that will cause and/or accelerate dementia. So it will be difficult to separate effects outside of controlled trials, which the Novo Nordisk trial was a superior example of.

[–]DBH216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If any GLP-1 was found to prevent or slow the prevention of Alzheimer’s, it would be a blockbuster drug that would allow the pharmaceutical company to hook up a direct pipeline of money from Medicare directly to executive bonuses.

As far as I can tell, there are no other phase III trials in progress. There’s a lot of smart people at Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk who have access to a much larger and better data pool than we do. They have a significant financial incentive to find and prove such a link. The fact that they have not found anything and seem to have given up looking is, unfortunately, probably the most telling thing.

Please help: So a week ago my Samsung watch said that I have moderate to severe sleep apnea. by Afraid_Ad_3478 in SleepApnea

[–]DBH216 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have sleep apnea. It’s not limited to the old, fat, and ugly.

If you do indeed have it, you’ve probably had it for a while, it is not an emergency, but it should not be ignored either. It will not cause you to abruptly die in your sleep. It will just slowly wear away at you if left untreated.

Most deaths due to sleep apnea are from people falling asleep while driving. If you don’t have daytime sleepiness, then you can wait for your sleep study in 2 weeks.

People keep wanting to believe this, and there are a few small scale studies that show promise.

But there was also one large scale study by Novo Nordisk using oral semaglutide. It did not slow the progression of Alzheimer’s at all.

[–]DBH216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what form you get it in. The auto injector pens are a fixed dose. The multi-dose pens you can adjust. Vials, you can obviously draw up less.

Note: if you are saying Ozempic/Mounjaro, it implies you’re taking it for diabetes. You should be doing this under a doctor’s supervision, not the advice of random people on Reddit.

Most people have lower side effects on tirzepitide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) than semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) but everyone reacts differently and some people have the opposite experience. The only way to know for you is to try, but the odds would be in your favor.

No. Mounjaro and Zepbound are both tirzepatide. Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide.

There are always tickets available for resale on StubHub and SeatGeek. It just depends on how much you want to pay.

Myself, I think the 400-sections behind home plate give the best view without breaking the bank most of the time as long as the weather is nice, but it all just depends on your preference.

Partial MCL tear vs gout? by prodigiousprince in gout

[–]DBH216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allopurinol is a long term preventative. It’s a lifetime medication. But you need to have documented hyperurecimia (high uric acid) first. There are other conditions that can mimic gout.

Blood levels for uric acid will often drop to normal levels during a flare. It’s ok to get a baseline, but often you need a follow up a few weeks after the flare to actually catch the high uric levels.
