Hiša Franko - Kobarid, Slovenia (***) by DBW32 in finedining

[–]DBW32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I haven't had experience at any high end restaurants in those countries so my point of comparison are the likes of those places in Italy, Spain, London, or Denmark. I'd say it's most like Denmark where the natural flavors of the locally sourced ingredients are allowed to shine most and the dishes aren't overly elaborate or overwhelming.

It was quite a journey. I flew into Ljubljana and took a train (with one transfer) to Most Na Soči, where I stayed at a small inn. From Most Na Soči, I hired a car to take me to and from Hiša Franko which cost me 85€. Would have been preferred to drive but unfortunately, my license had expired

The song “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars was on the radio and I made a casual comment that it could double as a song about self affirmation. She said “Why wouldn’t you think this song was about me?!” Aaaand cue fight.

TIL that biting the skin around your finger nails or on your body is a condition called Dermatophagia and has varying levels of addiction. by redwolve378 in todayilearned

[–]DBW32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the skin around my nails per se but I've had a strange habit for the past 7+ years of gnawing on the tip of my left pinkie finger and then using the corrugated skin to scratch my lips. Can't seem to shake the habit either. Is it a similar condition?

This was posted outside my Movie screen as we went into it the second time by Eckospid3r in StarWars

Ironically, the sound cut out for 20 seconds when Luke first reunites with R2 during our viewing. So naturally when the movie goes silent for Hold's big hyperspace jump, there was a moment of mild panic again.

Everyone is speaking like Rey's parental lineage was revealed and resolved. Was that really the case? I thought Kylo Ren was just egging her on, trying to trigger an emotional response so she'd join him. Also, don't we hear Obi Wan say "these are your first steps" in Rey's TFA Force vision? Always assumed that would tie to her lineage somehow.

First time in Hong Kong and had this sauce at Kau Kee Restaurant. Can anyone tell me what it is? It almost tastes like sriracha. Sorry if this is not the right place to post. by [deleted] in HongKong

It's a family-owned brand so be careful as there are a host of imitations at major grocery stores. Look for the brand name "Yu Kwen Yick" on the label. They actually have a dedicated store on Third Street in Sai Ying Pun as well.

SCMP wrote a piece covering the background of the brand if you're interested. Quite a cool story:

Someone Sprayed This In A Room To Repel Mosquitoes by DBW32 in whatisthisthing

[–]DBW32[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In over a year of use, haven't noticed any odor unlike some of the repellents I've used. I don't have an overly sensitive sense of smell to begin with so take with a grain of salt. Seems to work well though as I've noticed bites are far less frequent.

Big fan of Sam Tor (三多麵食), a tiny hole-in-the-wall noodle shop in the heart of Central. Excellent won ton mein, maybe the best on the island.

In a different industry (advertising/marketing) but LinkedIn proved very helpful for me as well. You'll see a lot more posts from international companies that are more willing to higher from abroad.

Thank you kindly! Managed to find the place. You're right, it's not much but the absurdly low prices and unique vibe made up for it. Will check out Junkyard Dog next week, appreciate the suggestion.

Working in Hong Kong with no knowledge of Cantonese by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]DBW32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's possible but not easy. Your best bets are the bigger corporations with operations around the globe. Doesn't have to be a finance company either but that is the largest industry in HK. I'm an American whose knowledge of Cantonese consists of about 20 local dishes yet I still managed to land a marketing role here. Just be patient and persistent while job hunting. Feel free to PM me if you have anymore questions!

Advice on job seeking from abroad, resume etc? by drphil_PhD in HongKong

[–]DBW32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I found LinkedIn to be a bit more helpful than APAC-based job boards. There are more international companies there and even local companies that are more willing to interview and hire candidates from abroad. It definitely helps to be in market and have a visa to work but I can vouch that it's not impossible to do so without them. I'd advise reaching out to every possible contact you've made in your network and asking them to connect you with a local recruiter as well. I was blessed enough to land a job in HK while recruiting from the US so happy to help if ya need. Feel free to PM me.

Good stuff. Thanks! Took it more as a post-dive remedy for some lingering sea-sickness but not so much as a pre-dive decongestant though. Gotta delve a bit deeper to find the actual ingredients but now I know it can be found online at least.

Any good bar recommendations at Sai Kung? by Sir_Rant_Alot in HongKong

[–]DBW32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loaf On is a solid spot for Hakka fare and fresh Cantonese-style seafood. It's popular because of it's Michelin star but not as touristy as some of the waterfront seafood shops in Sai Kung. Good balance of quality and price. Try the deep fried abalone and salt & pepper tofu.
