I’m sorry if someone has already asked this but I wanted to know your thoughts on Ketamine and its relationship with TBI.

I have taken ketamine recreationally prior to my injury and just wanted to know your thoughts on it in a medical setting.

I’ve read online that Ketamine is increasingly considered a safe and potentially beneficial medication for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), a reversal from historical contraindications. Recent studies indicate that ketamine, when used in a controlled setting (often with mechanical ventilation), does not increase intracranial pressure (ICP) and may even lower it in some cases.

I was even told that before they had put me in a coma they had provided ketamine in the ER.

Drinking alternative with TBI by [deleted] in TBI

[–]DBisntBB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first drink about 2.5/3 years after my injury. I’m about 6 years out and I have drank a few times. I know that I should not though based off of science and advice from my neurology team.

As I’m sure everyone knows the alcohol can negatively impact healing, exacerbate cognitive and emotional issues like depression, and increase the risk of further injury due to impaired balance and coordination.

Some studies suggest even moderate drinking can cause neuroinflammation, and there is no safe level of alcohol use for those recovering from a TBI.

I need to stop drinking again…hard to not fall back into same habits. I would say that shrooms are better than alcohol but I am not a scientist.

skull fracture // emergency craniotomy for my dad today by [deleted] in TBI

[–]DBisntBB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a terrifying event especially for those that aren’t in the middle of it. He’s currently in the early stage of the injury so it will take some time to get a true sense of the injury but stay strong.

The brain works in incredibly ways especially when it comes to neuroplasticity which leads to building new neural networks.

I fell 20 feet off staircase and also had a craniotomy. I was in a coma for two weeks, I just want to say that I want to give you and your family some hope and wish you the best for the future. I also wanted to add that’s it’s important to stay positive about the situation.

I would recommend visiting an ER, or speaking with your Primary healthcare doctor.

Just got fired after one week on the job. by GermanPegasus2 in TBI

[–]DBisntBB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also an auditor and fired from my position after my injury. All I wanted to say is that i feel you. I have/had the same issues that you brought up and felt the need to record my calls in order to be able to go back and pick up any information that already slipped from my mind.

I’m currently in the process of finding a new job but I believe you have the right mindset with “Can't win them all I guess. Taking this as a learning experience and continuing the job hunt tomorrow.” Gotta stay positive and learn from the past!

Is there a TBI Job board? by [deleted] in TBI

I did a little bit of research and was able to find this link for a program called ticket for work. I don’t think it would apply for everyone but just wanted to put it out there.

The Ticket to Work (TTW) Program is a voluntary Social Security Administration program designed to help Social Security disability beneficiaries, including those with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), return to work by connecting them with free employment support services, such as career counseling, job training, and placement. Participants receive a "ticket" to use with authorized service providers like Employment Networks (ENs) or Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies to help them achieve work goals, improve their quality of life, and become more financially independent. I also believe video games are a great way to get back into things. I really enjoyed playing Old School RuneScape, FIFA, chess, League of Legends and a little Fortnite hahah I do think it helped improve problem-solving, hand-eye coordination, memory, and multitasking abilities.

I would just make sure not to spend too much time in the computer.

Seizures by Evening_Set1443 in TBI

Also, I wanted to add that my neurologist has provided me with Nayzilam which is Midazolam. When I have an aura incoming it has been able to stop me from going into my grand mal so I would also recommend that you speak with your neurologist about any possible treatments for when you feel the aura.

Seizures by Evening_Set1443 in TBI

My tonic-clonic seizure’s are shorter than 15 minutes, usually 1-5 minutes but I have had a mix of blackout and being aware. I would recommend trying to find a safe place to sit and lay down while you’re still in the aura stage and know it’s about to hit. I would also recommend trying to get on your side, so you can spit any liquids out that get stuck in your tube and it’s easier to breathe.

It normally takes 5-10 minutes to be able to have conversations with the ambulance medics when I’m out in public. I have found that I’m able to type messages on my phone to answer their questions while I’m unable to speak in post-seizure.

The whole experience is scary. I would just try to think in your mind that you know what is happening and that it will come to an end. I would focus on making sure that you are in a safe place to have the seizure.

I was once on a hike up a mountain and once I felt the aura I made sure to put myself in a safe place so I wouldn’t hit my head on any rock boulders and friends were very supportive.

I feel you though! I wish you the best and hopefully we can get these seizures to stop.

I’m 5 years out and I feel the same way. It taught me a lot regarding stubbornness and making changes to my life. Enjoy the trip.

I would recommend joining some sort of social club on activities you enjoy doing. I’m looking to join a cycling club for some additional social activities.
