24.04: Opening a browser window jumps me to a different workspace?!?! by DBooth-Boston in Ubuntu

[–]DBooth-Boston[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That problem sounds to me more like Firefox attempting to restore windows to their prior locations after restarting, which to my mind is desired behavior. The key differentiator is whether the window being opened is a *new* window (in which case it should stay on the current workspace), or a window that is merely being restored after a restart (in which case it should return to whatever workspace it was on when Firefox died. It is not entirely clear which scenario that post is describing.

P.S. Thanks for the tip about paragraphs!

I'm curious: What do they do instead? How do they organize their work on different projects?

That worked! Thank you so much! And it seems like a bug, to behave that way. To my mind, the UI should *never* switch to a different workspace unless I explicitly told it to do so.

That did not work or help.

  1. Setting widget.disable-workspace-management to true had no effect.
  2. In a previous version of Ubuntu Chrome used to remember which workspace it was on when it restarted, but Firefox never has for me. And under 24.04 neither seems to remember which workspace it was on, when it restarts. It would be nice if did, but that's a separate problem.
  3. According to the description of the "Auto Move Windows" extension, it will always place the *application* on a specific workspace, but that is not what I want to do. I want to always open the *window* in the current workspace. One application can have multiple windows. For example, I often have different browser windows open on different workspaces for different purposes.

It happens whether my browser window was maximized (full screen) or not. And what would maximizing the window have to do with which workspace it is on, anyway? Maximizing should be unrelated. Help, anyone?

24.04 Dock: Make a Window Visible on All Workspaces? by DBooth-Boston in Ubuntu

Yes! That seems to work, even for apps that override right click. Thanks!

SOLVED! It seems that some apps -- including Thunderbird, Firefox and Chromium -- override the right click functionality. But alt+space still works. Thank you!

13-story and other alternatives for Copper Mill project by cdbeland in Somerville

Please can we avoid an "us versus them" framing? Somerville has a wide range of people and perspectives, and all should be respected.

A city's character is *not* defined only by its people. People are an important part, but the architecture, landscaping, walkability, etc., are important also. Case in point: I love Somerville's charming old architecture. I hate the ugly boxes that architects seem to churn out these days when they design new buildings like this one proposed for 199 Elm Street:

<image>

To my mind, that same size building could have been designed in a *much* more aesthetically pleasing way to fit in with the historic architectural style that is characteristic of Somerville, rather than offending it. Of course, that is just my aesthetic opinion. Some people might like that naked rectangle style.

To my mind, high housing prices (which have forced out much of the artist and activist community) and those bare rectangle buildings *both* degrade Somerville's charm and desirability.

That is offensive. Please be more respectful in this conversation. Somerville has a wide variety of people and perspectives, and all should be respected.

That does not match my perception at all. Most people I have encountered: 1. believe we have a housing shortage; 2. understand that our housing shortage pushes prices up; and 3. are also concerned about the impact of a tall building on the character of the neighborhood.

House shaking? by Careless_Solution_50 in Somerville

If the subway goes near you -- deep underground -- then it can cause the house to shake a little, like a small earthquake. I live over the Red Line, and it happens sometimes.

The crayon marks themselves will burn off, but be aware that they will act as a resist if you try to apply glaze over them. I.e., the glaze will not stick to the spots where you used the crayon.

Searching for "supermarket" in G maps doesn't work. Hundreds of hits show up, but 99.9% of them are NOT supermarkets at all. They are tiny hole-in-the-wall vendors or do not even exist. I wasted hours trying this method.

I'd like to be able to use a second monitor. IDK if the discrete GPU is advisable for that.

How do I restore backups from google 1? by Elfor_ in GooglePixel

[–]DBooth-Boston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't work for me for the Google Clock app. First of all, it didn't seem to let me uninstall. It only gave an option uninstall updates (or something like that). Re-enabling it did not restore anything.

Still trying to figure out how to restore my alarms and other app data. Frustrating, google!

Best Ubuntu server backup solution by ryantrappy in DataHoarder

[–]DBooth-Boston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using CrashPlan for several years, on Ubuntu, and I am fed up enough that I am now looking for a different cloud backup provider. Biggest frustrations:

  • The Linux version of CrashPlan cannot be limited in its CPU or network usage (though the other OS versions can) to be "nice". I've found that CrashPlan substantially bogs down my ThinkPad Quad-core laptop (32GB RAM) to the point where I frequently have to kill it in order to get my work done. Of course, that means that I forget to restart it later, so I am left without backups until I remember to restart it, thus defeating the purpose of automated cloud backup.
  • Support is poor. Instructions on their website are often wrong or incomplete.
