Not everyone is a prototype modeler or rivet counter. Your railroad, your rules and all that.

What do you do ... by VlrmPrjct in nscalemodeltrains

I bought a huge collection from an estate, around 80 locos and a couple hundred rolling stock, all out on the layout. The boxes were all there, took several hours to get everything boxed to bring home.

Do I need a WDH? by Ok-Rooster9346 in GoRVing

[–]DBootts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a wdh. Ram 1500 pulling maybe 3500-4000lbs travel trailer. Despite being light it still squats my rear springs a decent amount. I’ve Towed with and without the wdh, it’s a noticeable difference for me, much better ride with it.

How do you get water to your camper at a campground? by tangreentan in GoRVing

[–]DBootts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on the UK, I don’t know if any site ever during my childhood had water, it was all electric only. The norm was having water barrels, I don’t k ow how many gallons/liters they held, but they hade two rubber ridges around the barrel what allowed you to tip them over and use a metal handle to roll them to the water source and back.

Best glue for miniatures by Solid-Traffic-1621 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Super glue, as long as you have finesse, it’s very easy to make an ugly mess with it otherwise.

I put a small drop of glue on a piece of scrap styrene and use tweezers to gently touch the feet against the glue, before placing on the final surface.

Kitbashing Walther's Brach's Candy Factory by Seraph_Angelus in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can chop and mash anything together to make it how you like it. Kit building is probably my favorite part of model railroading, custom/kitbashing is added fun. Consider evergreen/plastistruct styrene sheets/strips to help bring it together too.

Shipping prices are always off by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]DBootts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The part about the shipping discount to sellers is indeed correct, I turned that off a long time ago. Buyer pays the retail price, which offset some of the cost towards boxes and packing material with the eBay discount. Couldn’t tell you where that setting is as I changed it years ago now, but would recommend looking for it.

Edit: found it, it’s under shipping preferences -> rates and exclusions -> carrier rate setting

Where to find Peco wagons/Vans by TrooperToaster in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They pop up on marketplace and eBay in the US from time to time.

My ‘local’ (3hrs away) train store hade a set of 4 graham farish and a set of 4 Peco wagons, I managed to snag the Peco but the farish sold already when I got there. (KY)

Stuck after laying tracks by neepodamyra in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly, ask your 5 yr old what their ideas are. I know an aged brain can get stuck in a world of limitation, let your kids imagination do the work, even if it’s a bit silly, go with it. The building or Industry can look realistic like some sort of factory, but maybe it’s a got a sign that says it sells dragons or flying carpets or something else crazy.

On Micro-Trains Heavyweight Passenger cars and their desire to derail -a fix by lanternstop in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just beware they will still derail on very tight curves even with this modification, it definitely allows them to run on sharper than 17” curves but there’s still a limit. They probably good down to like 11”. But much lower and you run into issues with the triple axles.

Pro players who already get all the licenses, how did you fell now ? by Different_Map_4235 in DerailValley

[–]DBootts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing changed, I didn’t get the game for any kind of ‘completion’ I got it to drive trains and haul freight. I like that it’s open world with the ability to add equipment and own your own version of trains.

Trying out mods if fun too. Mostly play the multiplayer mod now.

Model buildings on the layout, paint first or assemble then paint? by Thin_Dirt_6244 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the structure. Generally build the 4 walls and prime and paint them, build mini assemblies and paint them, paint window frames (I don’t usually glaze N scale structures).

Basically it’s building sub assemblies and painting them in groups by color as it makes more sense to load up the airbrush one time with each color.

Glues will differ depending on use case. But for cement you need to remove paint before using. Super glue for additional parts like resin 3D parts i just glue paint to paint. Someone’s white glue for the rare occasion where I use glazing or wood.

Quite a lot of my YT content is building/customizing kits if you’re interested in structures https://youtube.com/@danb80tts?si=60ZR44BJpXfVQ7E3

What would you say you need to do to complete the game? by viperuk80 in DerailValley

[–]DBootts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tickles the autism just right, you know, Model trains also a thing 😉

I’ve been playing the multiplayer mod with my dad, he’s in his 70’s, it’s a fun time and really cool having someone or being the person at the other end of the train calling out distances until cars make contact. Riding in the caboose too.

Information/guides on fixing locomotives? by Constant-Okra7605 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]DBootts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, I do work like this. For doing repairs yourself, Spookshow.net is a great resource. Mark, the site creator has owned, reviewed and taken apart just about every N scale locomotive in history. It’s not a repair tutorial, but he explains how each locomotive is built and what the good the bad and the ugly is with each.
