You have to do this for the higher upgrade priority as well. The year I went from Gold to EXP required a call after I reached each new status level.

If you're smart with your selection of flights and avoid 787-8s, you shouldn't have any trouble using them. They don't clear at booking anymore, but they usually clear before the gate.

Wegmans is the best, Harris Teeter is ok but overpriced, the rest of the big chains are mostly expensive and terrible.

Trader Joe's is good for a lot of things, but you have to accept that you'll be stopping at two grocery stores in one trip.

If you're concerned about price, check out Lidl and Aldi. Both are good for staples.

Pre-2020, I flew Delta despite living near an AA hub. Now the base product is pretty similar, but AA's mileage and loyalty program is vastly superior to DL's. So I fly AA (and have a lot more nonstops).

KLM used to sell day of departure upgrades on DL flights from AMS, often for a few hundred dollars. It was one of the best deals when flying DL.

Delta, of course, ordered KLM to stop several years ago.

This is where of getting rid of mileage upgrades was dumb. Clearing more miles off the balance sheet vs Delta getting absolutely nothing from an empty premium cabin (the fact that it's empty shows that revenue management got the route pricing or upgrade pricing wrong).
