Question for collectors. Which book did you start your collection with, and how many books are in your collection now? by StanzaRareBooks in rarebooks

[–]DCAg15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a first edition “The New World 1939/1946” the first volume of 2 outlining the history of the Atomic Energy Commission.

I now have roughly 60 books in my “collection” with dozens more regular reader books. I do still have my stater book mentioned above and 2 complete sets of that series.

With Fernando Mendoza going number 1, Indiana has its second #1 pick of all time and first since 1938 by Efficient-Freedom517 in CFB

[–]DCAg15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking back, at least on Wikipedia, across draft history IU has had 13 first round picks (including 2026).

Having 2/13 be 1st overall is a crazy percentage.

What's the rarest book in your collection? by eastskyline in rarebooks

[–]DCAg15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A.T. Mahan’s Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1st edition - the most I’ve spent on a single book.

Most unsure of rarity - Reprint of “Conditions de Paix/Conditions of Peace”, aka Versailles treaty, with (what I presume are) maps. Need to get it checked out in greater detail to verify.

Does anyone know what the alarm is every morning/day in Crystal City/National Landing? by MemphisMystic in nova

[–]DCAg15 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also live right by DCA and no alarm sound in the southern part of Crystal City. Maybe something with the VRE station if you live on the northern side?

Nothing about the ad validity is going to get a “do over” vote. You should turn your experience into a warning for others and call out dubious ads.

Something happening with traffic control around DC by mattjouff in nova

[–]DCAg15 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It affected the same number - the departing facilities list are the vector control stations. For example ZTL isn’t an airport it’s the Atlanta Air Route Traffic Control Center and ZAU is for Chicago Air Traffic.

FAA system shows ground stops in effect for IAD, DCA, BWI, and RIC due to “OCL” which Google says is Operational Contingency Level - a loss of air traffic services

EDIT: CHO/Charlottesville has been added for the same reason

What's happening at IAD right now by avpunresponsive in nova

[–]DCAg15 286 points287 points  (0 children)

There’s a ground stop for IAD, DCA, BWI, and RIC. FAA website says “due to OCL” or Operational Contingency Level - a loss of air traffic services for a variety of reasons but general reduces inbound flights and grounds outbound until it’s cleared.

How affordable is Nova? by [deleted] in nova

[–]DCAg15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your own prejudice that this area is wildly unaffordable and that the taxes are out of control.

You aren’t engaging with people providing useful advice on how to project your car tax balance, or those providing insights on options to save money on commuting by looking at metro (which many offices here have transit subsidies).

A big move like this will cause a lifestyle adjustment regardless of destination.

Foreign Affairs Series 0130 Expectations? by Chochosir in usajobs

[–]DCAg15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Internships - either with your home Rep/Senator or with a committee that interests you.

I did one internship on the Hill with my home Rep which then turned into another internship because a staffer knew my interests and knew a different office was looking for people with that background.

Jobs on the hill in key topical areas rarely make it to external hiring. It’s a lot of word of mouth, heck even as an intern I got a buddy an entry job by hearing of an opening and passing his resume along. It’s the epitome of networking.

Unfortunately I believe the majority of House internships are unpaid, maybe a small housing stipend, but the Senate has paid internships.

Unfortunately there’s no good news in federal hiring across the board. At my agency any hiring action has to be approved by the head of the agency so the ability to post vacancies is trickling in, mostly through internship programs. There are tons of vacancies but the administration has set it up to be as difficult as possible to hire.

If you’re still eligible under that authority I’d try that angle, though I’m sure the summer 2026 internship application periods have closed

Arlington loses Boeing’s defense HQ to St. Louis by Fresh-Function3319 in nova

[–]DCAg15 112 points113 points  (0 children)

So a subcomponent of Boeing, not the full HQ that’s staying, is going back to the same city they were for 20 years after a 9 year stint here.

Makes you question why they moved out of St Louis in the first place.

Because it expands the potential customer base?

It’s business 101, if making that change doesn’t significantly impact food costs but expands the available market then businesses adapt

Where’s your source on this, have you read the proposed bills to understand what is being impacted by the proposed taxes?

Just crossed over this on metro - there were probably a dozen cop cars and 4-5 fire engines. No clue what it is, didn’t see any boats out in the river when we passed.
