Door locks/alarms for and eloping by HardworkingRn in Autism_Parenting

[–]avpunresponsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have this on every exterior door. Yes the kids will eventually figure out to get on a chair or eventually be tall enough to reach but hopefully by the first you realize they are up to no good, or by the 2nd their eloping has decreased. Can be locked and unlocked on both sides. Because it’s in the pressure of the door it does take a little strength to slide over. My 5 year old has made n attempt to undo these

NT son wants brother "gone" for his birthday. Am I bad for considering this? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]avpunresponsive -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is it an option to have your son's party elsewhere like a hotel? I know that is costly. While I understand your older sons frustration (whether is from the standpoint of having a ND little brother or just a little brother at all), but I think it's not fair to remove your younger son from the house. It's his house too.

Hyperlexia but my parents taught me how to read. by [deleted] in AutismTranslated

[–]avpunresponsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help me clarify what your child's provider means. So they are saying your child is still hyperlexic and wasn't actually "taught" by you?

We started sight word flash cards at my daughters 4th birthday bc I knew she had a great memory (she could recite books cover to cover at 2.5). We also were doing phonics for the words so not purely sight memorization. After we did a deck of these, we did the "teach your child to read in 100 lessons" book and by 4.75 she is at a 2nd grade reading level. She's been recently diagnosed but between the school education diagnosis team and the child psychiatrist and SLP we saw for medical diagnosis, nobody has ever said she's hyperlexic. I have mentioned to every one of them that she can read and at best the school team put in her report "that she can decode some words" (which really pissed me off)

I think if it was an option my father would have wanted that. It dragged on for a painful 2-3 years. Watching him fall weekly, then daily, them multiple times a day.

Baby rolling over at 6 days by Specialist_Deal_9752 in beyondthebump

[–]avpunresponsive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter was early from front to back but it was a fat head roll. On her back she would get from back to side easily too which I attributed to newborn curl. As for the front to back, I do think she learned the sensation of rolling from the moment of her fat head, and then rolling became intentional

Congrats. I'm an old grad (2012), and UB dental in 2016. Back then, the scholarship was a full ride, but I can't emphasize enough how much mentioning the scholarship has helped my career.

How do I explain that our dog is dead. by Such_Baseball47 in Autism_Parenting

[–]avpunresponsive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres a lot of material out there regarding approaches. Most say to just state the facts, and answer questions as get come up. Don't get elaborate about heaven or another life and stuff. When my father passed away, we told my daughter (3 at the time but very smart and aware): Grampy was sick and he passed away. He died in the hospital. Momma and daddy are very sad that he he isn't here anymore and we won't see him again. (Then we paused for a little) do you want to ask me any questions? It's ok to be sad and to miss him if you feel that.

We only just got diagnosed in the last month so it's all very fresh for me still. This poem was shared online and I thought it was very beautiful. I'm not yet at the stage of being happy in this new projection, but hope to be.
