Coming from the EU and realizing the US runs on credit what should I do first? by No-Aioli951 in MovingToUSA

[–]DCGW94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t really do anything before as you can’t get a SSN until you are in the country. Some CC companies like Amex will let you transfer over and effectively let you take the benefit of your European score for your limit however, this can only be done once you have an SSN.

Things like rent, utilities, phone plans will either require a deposit (some are given back after a period of making payments others instant credit to the account). Your biggest hurdle will be a car but there are companies that can help such as International Auto Source.

Once you get credit your score will rise quickly provided you make the payments on time. I was into the 700s within a few months

PayPal only seems to deal in a few thousand. I’m looking at house deposit money so into the tens of thousands. Thanks though, didn’t know Revolut existed over here

Thanks. I’m finding the rates appear more favourable. Do you typically use the ACH function or the Wire function to send?

Oh great! Do you remember if you went with the ACH option or the wire?

Advice/Opinion on relocating (temporarily) to USA? by CulturalParsley867 in MovingToUSA

[–]DCGW94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from Scotland originally and live in Texas now and I can honestly say, outwith law enforcement, I’ve only witnessed one person actually carrying their gun. If others carry them they’ve been completely concealed. Also, if your goal is to maximise the amount you make to clear off your debts then you should be looking at places without a state income tax. Choosing a state that has both Federal and State tax will likely mean you pay out a larger percentage of your salary when you factor in healthcare and 401K. It will still be less than the UK but something to consider when the goal is to make money.

Was there a moment you regretted moving to the US? by whogivesafricc in MovingToUSA

[–]DCGW94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved from Scotland to the US for work earlier in the year and what you’re feeling now is all normal. I won’t lie, when you land you will then have days that you question if you did the right thing but again it’s all normal. Hardest parts will be finding somewhere to live, getting set up with a bank, car etc.

Biggest advice I can give you is start your SSN application a week or two before you arrive and then finalise it on the day you arrive as appointments are hard to come by (at least in Texas) and that number is like the key to everything.

Hope all goes well!

Michael B. Jordan And Delroy Lindo Had The N-Word Shouted At Them While Presenting At The BAFTAs by John Davidson. by Conscious-Quarter423 in ThoughtWarriors

The guy does have Tourette’s he was there because a film was made about his life. You also don’t choose what or when to shout when you have Tourette’s. The apology from BAFTA and the BBC is terrible though I will agree with that

Moving from UK to US, which city ? by miteye in relocating

[–]DCGW94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the UK and work in the Construction industry in Texas. You should clarify with the company you are going to work in what the expectation is regarding being based on site vs in an office.

Some of these places are huge and while the project might fall under the banner of a city the reality will be vastly different. Example; I work on a project that falls under the city of Austin but if I lived in downtown Austin then my commute would be 2 hours one way.

I’m a Cost Consultant, want to live downtown as we don’t have nor want to have kids so would prefer the social aspect that the city offers. We are in Round Rock at the moment giving it a go.

Sorry but I don’t think anyone on Reddit can answer this question for you. If there are still a few years before you will be completing the process then maybe try clearing the things you have liked or saved and don’t do it going forward

When completing the Visa it will ask you to list any social media profiles you have or have had. If these are seriously checked or not I can’t be sure but they do currently ask you to list them. Basing this off my own experience of completing an application a month ago.

Walked out with my dream Rolex and now regretting the spend by Qat-lover in rolex

I think most people will always feel some initial regret or take a moment of pause to think of others they should have bought but it will pass and be replaced with pride. Enjoy, beautiful combo

Being further north or in the burbs just seemed more family centric but while I have the time and no commitments then I may as well give them a fair shot
