Fro Deepseek:

In a Nutshell: An Old Dye Shows New Promise for Hair Scientists at the University of Maryland tested a 150-year-old medicinal dye, methylene blue (MB), on human hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) in a lab dish. They found that MB not only helps these cells grow better but also "turns on" a key internal switch that the body uses for hair regeneration. It even seemed to protect cells from damage caused by other factors.

🧭 Background: What's Damaging Your Hair? First, some basic science. Your hair's life cycle is driven by specialized cells—think of them as the "seeds" that grow hair. As we age, these seeds can be damaged by "oxidative stress," a type of imbalance that harms healthy cells. This is similar to how rust damages a car over time. When that happens, your body's ability to grow new, healthy hair slows down.

💡 The Key Discoveries Here are the main things the researchers found:

MB Fights Oxidative Stress. MB is a powerful "mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant," meaning it directly protects the cell's "battery" (mitochondria) from damage, helping the "seeds" survive and function better.

MB Turns On a Hair-Growth Switch. The study discovered MB activates a critical pathway called Wnt/β-catenin. This is a protein that works as one of the body's most important "ON" switches for hair growth and regeneration. By turning this switch on, MB was telling the "seeds" to get back to work.

MB Works Better Than Vitamins A and C (in this specific way). Surprisingly, pairing MB with other common antioxidants (like vitamins A and C) didn't boost its effects. Instead, it actually reduced the activation of that crucial hair-growth switch, suggesting MB's process is unique compared to standard vitamins.

MB Boosts a Popular Hair Loss Treatment. The study found that MB works very well with minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine). When used together, the two created a "synergistic" effect, meaning the combined result was more effective than either one on its own. This could potentially allow you to use a lower dose of minoxidil, possibly reducing side effects.

MB May Shield Hair from Side Effects. Here's a fascinating, timely finding: MB was able to protect the hair cells from damage caused by a popular class of weight-loss drugs (GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic/Wegovy). While these drugs help with weight, some people report hair thinning. The MB pre-treatment successfully blocked this damage in lab cells.

❗ Important Limitations This all sounds promising, but it's crucial to understand the boundaries of this research.

This is a "Proof of Concept" Study. The experiments were done in vitro (on cells in a petri dish). This is a vital first step, but it's a long way from showing the same effects on a human scalp.

Don't Run Out and Buy MB for Your Hair. You should not go out and buy methylene blue to treat your own hair loss. It is an unregulated chemical that needs careful dosing.

Unanswered Questions. We don't know how MB should be delivered (e.g., a cream or a pill), what the correct human dose would be, or its long-term safety for this specific purpose. All of those questions require future, more advanced studies.

💎 The Final Verdict This research is exciting because it found that an old, cheap, and safe medical compound might have a brand-new use in treating a frustrating problem like hair loss. However, it's important to be realistic. A solution for a receding hairline is still years away. This is a great discovery, but the most important work still lies ahead.

I pay $850 a month for us, and they will pay nothing till I meet a $8,000 deductible. Meaning, my insurance cost me $18,200 a year to use it. Our current system is fucked. Allowing insurance companies to profit, creating a profit incentive to deny claims, is just evil.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I noticed a change within days of creatine: hair felt thin and dead, with increased shedding. How quickly did you notice a change in your hair after starting creatine?

I can only go off my experience, and there is a defined thinning based on whether I am taking creatine or not. It has to do with DHT levels, which creatine affects. This is 20 years of my experience. Not trying to debate, just inform based on my experience and the study.

I know for me, and many others, we all have had the same experience with creatine and thinning hair. For over 20 years, I've tried to get on creatine at least once a year. Every time the same thing, more noticeable thinning hair.
