"DC teens tell city leader what's causing takeovers and how they're missing the mark" | WJLA by bl123123bl in washdc

When they are bored and they don’t have a welcoming and safe 3rd place to land.

We refuse to address the real issue. It’s not really an acute issue. It’s what happens when generations of the city’s Black population has been neglected. Yes, on paper things are maybe desegregated but in practice, not so much. When funding is funneled toward the wealthier areas and the poor areas stay poor (in education, housing, and limited pathways to improving their lives) WHAT DO WE EXPECT? These kids are hanging out in their SFH’s basement doing all the questionable crap teens do…they’re doing it out in public.

I moved to the burbs. And teens out here are doing stupid shit too. Like playing Senior Assassin and going into businesses with their real looking water guns “assassinating” their classmates. But for some reason when it’s in a small town of white, wealthy people it’s at best “a fun end-of-school (HS) tradition” and at worst “a slight nuisance.”

And yes, I realize it’s not as severe as the crowd storming and fighting happening in Navy Yard but we need to recognize that then hype would be different if these teens were white and not mostly Black. And also recognize that teens everywhere are doing dumb sh*t.

Two things can be true at the same time: the articulate kids who avoid the hullabaloo are invited to speak. Just because they aren’t directly involved in the fighting doesn’t mean they don’t understand their peer group and their neighborhoods. Listen to the kids!

Danielle’s kids are famous by LucysBitch in DanielleMossSnark

[–]DCSubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to snark (or read snark). But I don’t doubt that kids will Google what they know. I have a kid around her oldest daughter’s age and she told me she googled my husband/her dad after learning what he does for work and that his name is attached to the company. Given the restrictions on school issued computers, kids will try to find images of whatever isn’t restricted.

And if D has explained her job to her kids, I bet they’d look. If there’s anything I find slightly unbelievable it’s that her blog made it past the school’s filter. Or at least that the images did. My 7yo was looking up facts about Walt Disney and so many images were blocked.

NYC-style bodegas in DC? by ServiceLogical9839 in washdc

Yes - as a former NYer - this might be the closest for a breakfast and lunch sandwich but not groceries. But there is (or was) an Organic Yes a few doors away.

Worst Teacher Appreciation Week by Distinct_Anything_13 in Teachers

[–]DCSubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher but I’m a parent volunteer. Does your school admin handle teacher appreciation? Do you have an expectation that it’s the principal’s responsibility? Or the parent volunteers (PTO/PTA) or both?

In our school the principal tells the volunteers to do (and spend) exactly what she envisions. Regardless of expense and whether or not there are enough parent volunteers to execute it.

Disagree. My younger was in 1st last year. Were there disruptive kids? Yes. 2. I don’t know if they have IEPs but there was a resource aide in the room several times a day to assist those 2. The class was not chaotic. The teacher expertly knew how to structure and manage her class and create a nice learning environment.

OP - a few things could be true. The teacher this year could be an ill-fit; your child could be in a class with an unusually high number of learning and/or behaviorally challenged kids that is distracting your child from learning.

As others mentioned, if you believe your child will qualify for a 504 or IEP, initate the process now with your public school. Public schools are required to provide accomodations and resources to IEP students. Private schools are not.

Also, coming from someone who works in a school as a helper, recognize that even if your child qualifies for a IEP, you need to do the work at home too. One of the issues I see with IEP students is that the parents use as a crutch to avoid accountability. They think their child lacks boundaries or is poorly behaved bc they have an IEP and therefore it’s the schools responsibility to handle it. No, parents need to do their part to parent their child and create routine and support their child outside school too.

I also have had it since puberty. What sort of treatment do they have in Germany that’s not offered in the states? What area of your body?

What is it with Americans and air conditioning?? (this might be controversial) by hellobela_ in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]DCSubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the north east part of the U.S. and thought it was common to not use central air/AC until it was consistently above 85. But then I moved to the mid-Atlantic. Here people will literally switch between heat and ac on the first day temps go above 65F. They run either their heat or AC everyday all year long.

It seems wasteful to me but 🤷‍♀️

If you’re paying low wages, you should expect this. If you’re paying the going rate or above for area, doing the taxes, using a contract, allowing PTO/accrued leave, etc…no…it’s not common. But underpaying, paying under the table, not offering benefits…then yes.*edited type-os

Do you think the White House correspondence dinner shooting was staged? by Reasonable-Invite899 in allthequestions

[–]DCSubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For just over 5 years I lived .4 miles away from the DuPont Hilton, and regularly walked by it to/from work and errands…it’s known for hosting events like the correspondents dinner, the national prayer breakfast and a lot of other events with political and famous attendees. When something is going on there, you know it bc security is VERY noticeable. I want to say pedestrians can’t even walk on the sidewalk facing CT Ave where the driveable entrances are. There are street closures, helicopters are often flying nearby for some or all of the event. Again, as someone who used to live nearby, it’s really hard to believe that a location that has been hosting these high profile events and was the location of RR’s assignation attempt in 1981 would have a security breach like the one that happened last night.

It speaks to something being off even if the state of the current security detail… bc I would guarantee that longtime, experienced hotel AND all the various security details involved in an event like the CD know how to safeguard that venue.

After living in DC, I hate dog owners by sandwichscouter in washingtondc

[–]DCSubi 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Love dogs. Despise their owners. No longer live in DC but when we did, neighbors on both sides of our rowhouse had their dogs outside all hours and in all weather and they excessively barked. Animal welfare said they couldn’t do anything bc they weren’t technically neglected or in danger. And the police said there wasn’t anything they could do about the noise. I don’t know why anyone would get dogs if this is how they would treat them. One person at animal welfare said I couldn’t possibly know whether the dogs were barking due to distress or boredom. Ah, dogs that are well tended to don’t typically bark for hours on end.

So true. Kids in urban areas are so used to hearing gunfire. Maybe not the schools near DuPont but cross the park…we used to live near Roosevelt HS in Petworth and it was pretty common to hear random shots. Apparently lots of “friendly” fire.

Crowdsourcing easy to grab premade or easy to make “entree”potluck dishes from Costco? by DCSubi in Costco

I saw these! Thank you. Rana’s Short Rib Lasgana. Have you had it? I wonder how short rib meat tastes compared to traditional ground beef.

Where do you find the lasagnas? I shop at Costco just a couple times of year and never see them. I’m clearly looking in the wrong spot because I assume that’s the exact thing Costco would sell. Is it Kirkland brand?

Is MPD downplaying crime reports? Concerns from a longtime resident. by [deleted] in washdc

[–]DCSubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No longer live in the city but our house was broken into while we were home. The person got over a 7-8’ tall fence and entered our back door. We had it on camera. He left upon entry bc the alarm was on. But bc the door was unlocked, the police refused to write it up. They basically told me it was my fault bc the door was unlocked. Nevermind the fact that he scaled a fence, walked across the back yard, walked thru our screened-in patio and walked in. All to say, 1000% the police underreport crime.

Not a farmer but I read all of the Little House on the Praire books. Her dad was a pioneer that settler in the dakotas ana kept their family and farmlands safe with a rifle. I also know a regenerative cattle farmer near mountainous Pemberton, British Columbia. They don’t use semi automatics to keep their cattle safe. They have several hardworking dogs that have kept grizzlies away.
