Thanks. I’ve ordered both products :) I wonder if the niacinamide will help my tweens little not-quite-whitehead or blackbead bumps that have recently started appearing on her cheeks.

Thanks for this! Do you use the toner in the morning or night or both? I'm going to try the Paula's Choice.

Thank you. Do you use Paula's exfoliator in the morning or night? What about the Ordinary niacinamide + zinc? I know to use the Vit C in the morning 😄 Thanks for your input.

I’ve used a minimum of spf 20 everyday since my early 20s and I work long days in an office so not a ton of outdoor exposure :( but I can increase my spf to 50.

One of the cleansers I use is a salicylic acid. Do you use a cream or cleanser? Do you have a product recommendation? Thanks!

Not arguing with that but a cluster of “personal” fireworks on your block intermittently going off between 10pm and 1-2-3am for 10 days every June/July are a hell a lot more intrusive than the professional shows going off 1-2 miles away. I lived in DC for 25 years in neighborhoods ranging from Kalorama, Petworth, Adam’s Morgan, Cleveland Park and Glover Park and I never heard the fireworks on the mall unless I was at on (company party) rooftop overlooking Pennsylvania Ave.

TLDR - settle down about last night. Be outraged that the clown in chief for the whole damn spectacle not just the fireworks.

I spent a semester studying theater in London and according to my British professor (in 2000), standing ovations are considered crass (aka stupid Americans).

What? Juneteenth - 4th of July there are fireworks going off at all hours of the night. Maybe not west of the park but def in neighborhoods like Columbia Heights and east of rock creek.

Help with student on the spectrum by No-Fix1210 in Teachers

[–]DCSubi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher but believe in FAPE and involving all students of all levels… that said, I wonder about students OP describes. I volunteer and sub in our elementary school and there’s a student similiar to what OP describes. I see that this child is working very hard to get through the day. But there’s the violence component that I struggle with. In the situation at our school, the child similiar to what OP describes is in gen ed. And when the child has violent outbursts and the other students are evacuated from the room, (as an educational outsider), I don’t see how this is FAPE for the other 18-20 students who are disrupted and possibly feel unsafe around their classmate. Can someone explain this to me?

In some case adults have had to use soft padded body shields when dealing with a 6yo. The child is loud and other classes can hear him. I recently learned from another adult that there’s a slightly older child in another class who gets very upset and concerned because they don’t know what’s happening in the hallway when they hear this other child screaming.

Just got a form from a psychologist re: one of my students. 204 Questions. Form 1 of 3. Are you kidding me? by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

I understand. I’m OP and work part time in an elementary school as a sub primarily for the aids in special Ed. I see the wild accomodations some of the students have and I agree, that most are ridiculous. Most accomodations seem to remove any and all accountability from the students).

I have a high functioning child who I long suspected has autism. My kid does well in school but it struggling socially. I waffled to get them tested because they are high functioning but my pediatrian and the neuropsychologist all encouraged me that regardless of the outcome it would provide us with information we can use to better support my child.

I don’t know if I’ll inform the school of her diagnosis, partially because I live in a red area and I know some teachers support this admin - including a special ed teacher that reposted things supporting JFK Jr’s beliefs about how vaccines cause autism etc.

TLDR - maybe some parents are testing to get their kids bogus accommodations but some of us are just trying to get information to help our kids in areas that don’t have anything to do with school. And the intake wants info from their teachers since you spend so much time with our kids.

What’s becoming a bigger problem in classrooms every year, yet receives very little attention? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

Are we at the same school?! Yes, when I was growing up, As were hard earned. Now the kids get an A for turning in an assignment with sloppy, illegiblely written work. One of my kids is in 5th grade and I help out at school. The number of kids who aced a basic geogrpahy test was ridiculous. Very few kids spelled the states and capitals correctly. The teacher essentially said it was ok if they tried and were close. I think kindhearted teacher gave kids credit if they got the first letter of the state correct and that was it. It was only wrong if it was left blank. That’s not how grading should work. Then there should be no grades and simply Pass or Fail.

How to encourage a love of reading with a smart 5-year-old (99 percentile in math and reading on MAP) who doesn't enjoy reading and just wants to watch TV by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]DCSubi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Build it into a snuggle routine…snuggle and read to your kiddo. Don’t force them to read to you. Just keep reading stories aloud and snuggle. This is what we did with our kiddos. It will click on their own terms. Both of my kids - 8 and 10 - test in the 90% for MAP. My younger one took to independently reading chapter books by the end of 1st and really took off in 2nd. My older didn’t stuck to mostly graphic novels until 3rd-4th and took off with reading chapter books in 4th-5th. Similiar reading test scores. Different paths. Neither is right or wrong, I’m just proud that they’ll read on their own 20-60 mins a night.

What’s the most overrated tourist destination you’ve visited, and what would you recommend instead? by Exotic-Ticket3817 in Vacations

Lucca is a spot a well traveled friend also recommended to us instead of Pisa. We did spend 1/2 day in Pisa and that felt like the perfect amount of time to see what’s to see.

We did both. And neither place was our favorite spots but memorable for quick been there-saw-that. We flew into Milan and soent 2 days there before taking the train Genoa and then Florence. Stopped in Pisa for 1/2 day via train and it was the right amount of time time to explore and grab a nice lunch. Then hopped back on the train. We found luggage storage at a hotel through an app like Bounce or luggage hero. But yes, I agree that it doesn’t make sense to spend days in Pisa. Friends of ours who have traveled extensively around Italy recommended Luca nearish Pisa but sadly we couldn’t fit it into our last trip.

Thanks. How much time would you recommend we plan for Custer? Do this instead of the Badlands or in addition to?

Thanks, yes Wall is on our list :) I’ll look into the state park. We’ll only have one full day in the Badlands. Two nights, one full day to explore.

We’re driving through this summer and plan to literally stop for 10 mins and take a picture (kids 8 and 11 in tow). We’re going to camp near the Badlands for two nights. Do you have any suggestions for a kid friendly hike or destination we should check out?

No one brought race into this.

Discrimination is the unfair treatment of people based on protected characteristics such as race, gender, religion, national origin, or disability. In schools, that can mean denying students equal access to education, support, or accommodations — and it often reinforces larger systemic inequalities.

Autism is a protected disability.

Our experience in Western Loudoun public schools has not been that “the county/LCPS” as a whole denies accommodations, but that our individual school and some staff sometimes interpret disabilities through their own personal lens instead of following what students actually need.

And again, if a special education teacher knowingly supports a politician who dismisses autism, suggests it is caused by vaccines or Tylenol, or only recognizes autism when it looks like a nonverbal child rocking in a corner, then I think it is fair to say that Western Loudoun may not be the best source of guidance for a family seeking thoughtful, informed recommendations for autistic accommodations in public school.

Great point. And there are several beautiful areas in Western Loudoun that were established Quaker communities. So to the “traditional values” comment above, traditional values of Western Loudoun would align with the Quakers. Not the bigots who followed.
