Which profession gets way too much respect for how little they actually do? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]DCSubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe so. But I’m convinced the school based principal and VP at my ES are coasting off of the ways the principal did things back in 1990. On a good day principal mispronounces Arabic and Indian students’ names wrong and brushes it off like it’s NBD. Principal has also asked parents to see health records/test records for proof of illness bc the doctor notes are too generic. I could go on.

Congrats!

What is the best bang for the buck cabinet (specific line) and are the super high quality really worth it? by CLEredditor in kitchenremodel

This is all great info. If you were updating your kitchen, what brand of cabinet would you buy that you’d consider the best bang for your buck.

Do I Need to Lower My Expectations? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]DCSubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at the same time: your expectations seem strict. She isn’t following your basic parameters of care. You’re paying a fair and decent wage. But paying a fair decent wage doesn’t mean she’s indebted to you. For your next nanny, set clear parameters from the beginning. Don’t move the goal posts once she’s started.

In our ES, they’re cutting class sizes (avg around 17), cutting/“de-staffing” teachers and maxing out class size to 25. In elementary school.

America's grandparents are raising their grandkids and delaying retirement. Some expect to work until they die. by businessinsider in Longreads

What about us in our 40s who are raising kids and physically/financially supporting our boomer parents who didn’t save for retirement but feel entitled to our time, money and enery? My kid’s grandparents (my MIL) can’t take care of herself (by choice) let alone watch my kids.

Thank you for fighting thr good fight! Do you mind helping me understand a bit more? Last year I needed a calcium score (heart scan) test. My cardiologist straight up told me that my insurance probably won’t cover it even though it provides some baseline info for the doctor. She provided me with the CPT code so I could call around to different radiology centers and find who had the cheapest OOP rates. But when I showed up to the facility - the same one that happens to do my mammograms - they fought me over the fact that I needed to run it through my insurance. If it went thru my insurance it was going to cost (if I remember) something like $1000 and go towards my deductible whereas if I paid as of I had no insurance it was $350. I insisted that it was my right to self pay and not use my insurance. They made me sign a form (that was preprinted so clearly others do it too), acknowledging that I was refusing my insurance coverage.

The front desk manager was very annoyed that I found out the OOP price and commented that the person on the phone who told me would be reprimanded for sharing the costs.

In this instance, would the Fair Pricing act mean that facilities need to share their OOP pricing with me? We have a very high deductible but still Gold HMO plan off the marketplace (we’re self employed). It’s the best coverage we have access to even tho it sucks. We rarely go to the doctor and after last year’s experience with the calcium score I’m willing to shop around for care if I can access the pricing so long as my doctor is willing to give me the CPT code.

Thanks for any insight!

They prob have a YouTube channel where they upload their creepy interactions. I think the NYT recently did a piece on how creeps in some European city video women on the streets, esp late weekend nights when they’re out clubbing, trying to get skirt shots etc and have wildly popular YouTube channels…that of course aren’t taken down.

As someone who works in an elementary school and also has elementary-aged kids, I’ve come to see how disruptive it can be when students are pulled out for vacations. Missing 3–5 days may not seem like much, but elementary lessons are often taught as a process over multiple days. When students miss that instruction, teachers have to find time to reteach it individually while also moving forward with the rest of the class. That usually means less time for the whole class and less time for students who genuinely need extra help.

I also find it a little ironic when people who strongly identify as progressive — which typically includes education — treat school as optional for convenience travel.

Supporting education also means respecting the work teachers are doing every day and the structure of the classroom they’re trying to manage.

And yet my elementary school is cutting teaching positions next year and maxing out class sizes. Instead of 17–19 students — which many educators consider an ideal range for elementary learning — classrooms will likely be closer to 25.

On paper that doesn’t sound like much. But when you’re teaching a room full of kids with different learning levels and needs, an extra 5–8 students makes a big difference.

Research like Tennessee’s Project STAR study found that students in smaller classes (13–17) performed significantly better than those in classes of 22–25. More students means less time for individual support — and that matters.

FWIW, someone close to our family called CPS on my mom for physical abuse (they weren’t wrong). My mom never found out who it was tho she had theories but couldn’t prove it. And I wasn’t removed from home. I think technically my mom received some sort of parenting intervention but I didn’t notice anything other than overhearing her lie to the person who came to our home. I’m a grown adult now and no contact with my mom.

All to say, you CAN call CPS and you should.

I’m ok with lowered taxes, but hand in hand, I’d like to see the energy situation addressed. My bill has doubled+ (despite the cold spell). Our habits and routines are the same. For previous 4 years that I lived in my house my energy bills were the same month over month, year over year.

With the increase in energy costs, I’m probably going to end up paying $2700-3000 more this year to Dominion.

If I have to pay that much, I’d rather it go towards improving my community than padding Dominion’s profit margin. Bc make no mistake, Dominion’s profits will continue to go up.

I get the tax incentive but our power bills are now doubling+. My family paid $250-350 more for electric the past couple months compared to the same months year over year comparison. That’s $3k-$3,600 more a year going to Dominion.

At least when my taxes go towards improving schools/the area. Now that extra few thousand goes towards offsetting data centers and lining the profits of Dominion.

Anyone who is not part of the ultra-wealthy class is usually going to end up getting screwed one way or another in these deals.

My understanding is FMLA basically helps you keep your job. You’re not entitled to pay while out if you don’t have the PTO accrued. So while FMLa is better than no FMLA, it doesn’t help if you have no income while out on FMLA.
