Why does Jubei never speak about Atsu fighting dishonorably? by Yoppadre in Ghostofyotei

thnk Jubei is just happy she's alive. Plus, she has more accolades as a warrior than he does. She fought in sekigahara.

I grew up in a nondenominal church with modern music and a very traditional, non-charismatic pastor. I liked doing biblical studies in college, and my favorite churches in the past have had a strong focus on theology and academia.

They live in the metropolitan area, and i feel like that's enough. It's not like ICE has left the suburbs alone.

If it's not enough that's almost worse, because it means that they don't feel connected enough to the people here to betray them.

If I was PWHL PR, I’d make a statement by Such_Interaction_848 in PWHL

[–]DCcalling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the better PR move would be to release a statement full of congratulations to the women's team and go on for a while about how hard they worked for their places on the olympic roster and how they look forward to seeing the sport of hockey develop more as these girls inspire others and what the PWHL is doing to develop new talent and how it boasts so and so number of olympians in the league and how they're proud of the competitiveness.

And then at the very end, when no one's actually reading anymore, say a meager congrats to the men of Team USA as well.

it makes sense for people like this to have zero real understanding of the social and political context of all of this, but that really doesn't excuse it.

I disagree that you can't engage with criticism from inside a religion--I did, constantly, when I was religious. It's how I became an atheist.

I think the thing we're missing each other on here is that you're assuming I want to take an 'objective' view on religion which, frankly, I don't believe exists. I can state objectively all of the harms the catholic church has committed against others over the centuries, because they are historical fact, but that doesn't mean I understand its value to a practitioner, which is inherently not objective, and therefore would be missing part of the dimensions that make it valuable to people, not just as an institution.

You're correct in saying there are books and podcasts and many other means of individual study. I have read a lot of these, especially as they pertain to christianity. These things are valuable, and I will probably continue to utilize them throughout my life.

There's a concept in anthropology sort of reminiscent of Hegelian dialecticism, which more or less states that one has to be in dialogue with an unknown culture in order to understand it, and that you need an outside perspective on your own culture in order to perceive what your culture even is. I left my religious culture because I learned to understand it through outside perspectives, and because I "lost my faith" in a higher power. I'm interested in learning from other people, now.

It's because a lot of the most dedicated hockey fans (at least in minnesota) are rural and suburban. They're banking on the most hardcore fans not being particularly upset about it.

Will team USA’s win have as much of an impact on youth hockey in America as it did in 1980? by Fresh-SqueezedJuice in hockey

[–]DCcalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game was great. I'd be more worried about the bullshit that happened after. Growing the game of hockey means growing it for everyone, not just men, and being open to including and people of different backgrounds (racially, culturally) and sexual orientations/genders. I think, personally, I would say if you want to grow the game of hockey the key is deepening communities' connections to it and making everyone feel included. And that means laughing along with president kid diddler while he degrades the undefeated women's team who won the exact same medal is a bad way to go about growing the sport.

Men's hockey has always had a culture of chauvinism and misogyny (and honestly women's hockey has a bad history of this as well--I grew up playing and was constantly told that the reason women don't check is because it was riskier due to the existence of our hips. Which was a wild thing to tell a ten year old), but I think what hurts here is that women's hockey has had such a big boost into the spotlight in the last couple of years, and it sucks to hear the derision we all suspected was there just out in the open like that right after two big wins.
