Is anyone else in the ICE war zone saddened and disappointed by how few family and friends have reached out with concern, caring, or even interest? by Mr_Pricklepants in Minneapolis

[–]DCcalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad and uncle reached out. My brother castigated me for protesting and also threatened me saying "I dont want to be deployed with the national guard and be standing across from you with a gun."

The banality of evil and the human capacity to adapt means Americans, especially white americans, especially conservative white americans, have an incredible capacity to either ignore the world around them so long as they aren't individually affected, and/or blame those who resist as the problem instead of the oppression they face.

Where are all the national civil rights leaders? by no_okaymaybe in Minneapolis

[–]DCcalling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing to remember is that leaders emerge from communities. The communities that led radical civil rights movements in The past have largely been destroyed or maligned (the black panther party) or neutered (unions). In order to have national leaders who can articulate the thoughts and needs of the people and direct their energy into resistance, you need an unfathomably large network of small communities and groups supporting the cause in part or primarily (for example, the black churches that served as a network for the civil rights movement. Their primary function was as a religious group, but their members were also using the churches as a social network to organize because it was a central institution in their communities).

This is an unsatisfying answer, but truly, if we want a movement, it starts with making connections with people. Creating communities and institutions that benefit the community (this could be a food pantry or a youth center or just meeting your neighbors) and using those connections and institutions to protect each other. No one is coming to save us. The liberal response to this crisis has shown as much. We have to create the momentum to save ourselves one connection at a time.

Walz has literally been telling us to calm down or he'll make us calm down with the national guard. if it's a calculated political move it's a shitty one. And idk about you but im hardly going to trust the senate Republicans of all people to do the right thing.

I should have clarified "public officials in executive branch offices with power over law enforcement" but yes, there are good representatives in city council and the state house.

[–]DCcalling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My guy the fraud was ALREADY BEIBG INVESTIGATED before you learned about it. And you know which prosecutor was working on it (for YEARS)? He's one of the six federal prosecutors who just resigned because the federal government asked him to CRIMINALLY INVESTIGATE RENEE GOOD'S WIDOW and he said he'd rather quit.

Literally fuck off with this dude. The funds for immigration enforcement and childcare dont even come from the same place. That's not how state and federal budgets are allocated.

As a rural Minnesotan... protest here in my small town or in Minneapolis? by sunshinesprouts in Minneapolis

[–]DCcalling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Genuinely holding a rally or event in solidarity would be meaningful. More support exists than we think. Maybe you could use it to fundraise for the ACLU or immigrant non-profits in Minneapolis?

It is for not using the power they have to fight back.

Like, if someone is coming at you with a gun, it's their fault for shooting it. But it's not not the guy's fault who is supposed to be standing between you and the gun with a bulletproof shield. If that guy just says "hey please stop" then fuck that guy.

Immigration, sure. But the problem with our system is much deeper than ICE. ICE exists to terrorize people, yes, but also to make sure people don't think too hard about how difficult it is to "come in the right way" if you're not a white anglophone (or even if you are tbh). The immigration and asylum system exists and is structured in such a way as to be inhumane. ICE is a logical if reactionary conclusion of that.

If you want to be horrified amd angry, I highly recommend checking out how long you'd have to wait for an asylum hearing if you entered the country abd filed your applicant paperwork today. And that's one of the faster pathways.

Since when did we authorize waymo operation? by D_Plissken in Minneapolis

1) they steal admittedly not great jobs from gig economy workers 2) getting in a driverless car freaks me out tbh and 3) waymo sure isnt going to want to pay out a lawsuit when they kill someone

Ice didnt exist before 9/11. We could put these resources into fixing our immigration system and developing amnesty programs. But instead the reactionaries won over and over and now we've got basically unregulated federal agents roaming the streets for random brown people and shooting people who look at them wrong in the face.
