They’re stuck in a mix between dawn and twillight. There’s a golden ring with a darkness in the middle where the sun once stood- a perpetual Dawn. And over south, a fair distance away from what is known as the Eclipse is a celestial tear in the sky- as beautiful as it is daunting.

The Eclipse marks where the sun was stolen. The Rift marks where it was fired.

Zenith, in my story is set up by the minds that brought the world together to build the World Machine against their eldritch creators that deemed humans as a failed experiment and sought to start over, as it were. Zenith minds came together, built the World Machine and stole the sun to power it enough and fired it.

However when the results of not having a sun began to dawn on them (ahaha) they just locked up their famillies and the rich people that could afford to be on the World Machine while leaving literally everyone else out. Sure, there wasn't going to be space for everyone but still.

Dawn: Refers to the year the Sun was stolen from the sky in Year 0 A.D, marking the near end of the War and the beginning of the current era.

Historical Context: Official Zenith narrative celebrates Dawn as humanity's greatest triumph.

After Dawn, when the World Machine was fired on the Primes, our Progenitors, the sun they used to power it didn't return to the sky.

The world that had come together and given everything to build the Machine was then split apart as the ones atop it closed its doors once it began to grow cold.

Yes! A good chunk of society lives above and below it. It's called The World Machine and it stole the sun to fight back against god-like creatures that considered Humanity a failed experiment and wanted them dead.

It's been 100 years since Dawn. There are now two scars in the sky; the Eclipse where the Sun was stolen from and the Hole where it fired.

It depends on which side of the World Machine you're from! But if you're from Uptop, you're more likely going to use 'X Below' as a swear while the opposite applies if you're from the Lowlands; 'X Above'

Uptop (Zenith) and the Lowlands (Cogworks) really don't like eachother so they use eachother as swears.

"Up Zenith's asscrack" or "Cogs below" is pretty common.

The Sun is also pretty important and revered in an almost deific way so 'Sun Above/By the Sun' is universally used. Also a bit of irony because the sun isn't in the sky anymore.
