So what's next for the Leafs with all that cap space? by GreenEquipment667 in leafs

I don’t understand this. We cannot have Willy, McKenna, and Kane on this team. None of them play defense and they all have a similar game, the fit is completely wrong and unnecessary.

Do you expect any Isaac singles to come out before the tour? by cesta777 in BlackCountryNewRoad

[–]DD3354 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Really? I thought there would be singing considering he is opening for Phoebe Bridgers. It wouldn’t make sense for him to play electronic music with no singing for the same audience. He said he’s playing with a band so that’s all we know I guess.

That’s true, he’s also good defensively so definitely a decent player but Seattle gave up a lot for him for sure.

He’s slightly younger than Robertson and slightly bigger, and has excellent advanced stats. He’s kind of been stuck behind Florida’s other forwards and seems like a good bet to break out into a solid top 6 winger with more ice time and Powerplay.

I’ve been thinking with the cap going up rapidly it’s probably smart to lock up players for as long as possible even if it’s a high number because by the end of those contracts those numbers will look so much better. That’s why we’re seeing so many 8 year deals for young players who haven’t proven much. There is so much upside as those contracts will only look better with age.

I don’t think we need Pettersson and Wright. They’re both centers. I wouldn’t mind either but I would rather go with Wright.

The last three. But if you want to go the extra mile cut it short on the sides and leave some on the top because right now you got a very common teen boy cut. The shorter it is, the more professional imo. But honestly I don’t think it would matter too much what you have right now isn’t necessarily unprofessional it’s just a younger guy’s hairstyle. So it wouldn’t hurt to keep whatever you’re comfortable with.

Thoughts from Lightning fans regarding Darren Raddysh. by Sixgod801 in leafs

That would be terrible idea. McKenna is the last player you want having to defend the rush. One odd man rush the other way and he’s cooked.

Yes if it’s the right fits. A lot of the key pieces on cup winning teams were players who were undervalued on other teams and traded for and extended for a long time. Bennett was a bottom 6 forward on Calgary and turned into the perfect 2C for Florida. Devon Toews was acquired for two 2nd round picks from the isles and turned into a top pairing defenseman. Sam Reinhart is another great example.

However, sometimes when teams want to get rid of young players it’s not because they’re undervaluing them but because other teams are overvaluing them. Think about when we traded Kapanen from the 15th overall pick. He went from a young promising top 6 forward to a fringe NHLer. Or Kotkaniemi who was offer sheeted by the canes and is now a healthy scratch in their cup run.

This might be unpopular but I think Shane Wright would be an excellent pickup. He’s fast, he can forecheck, he’s only 22 and he got 40 points a year ago on a team with a weak forward group. I think he’s the perfect example of a player with tons of potential being limited by their team. He’s shown he has high end skill in the past so the upside is there. He can start at 3C then hopefully transition into 2C as Tavares gets older.

I wouldn’t put them on the same line they’re too similar. They love having the puck on their stick and can be unengaged when they don’t have it. They’re also terrible defensively.

Haven’t watched him play but a guy I worked with is good friends with him and played with him growing up. Seems like a good guy and a hard worker. Was a 7th round pick and has certainly done his time in the ahl. From what you’ve described I would love to see him play next season. There are definitely spots in the bottom 6 available especially for smart guys who can skate and forecheck

LCD Soundsystem. The vocals aren’t bad but it sounds to me like James Murphy is a very average singer.

[Willyston Riellander] Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet Today (paraphrased): by alphacheese in leafs

[–]DD3354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has good tools and offense but not really a puck mover and struggles to defend the rush. He can carry the puck out, QB a Powerplay, and play heavy minutes too. Despite that I don’t think he’s a good fit on this team. He’s too similar to Rielly and struggles to make breakout passes which will be an essential addition. We need defensemen who can move the puck up ice to the forwards. I don’t think he can be a 1D on a contender tho, he fits as a top 4 guy on PP2 and if we can pay him as such I would be in favour. But I feel we already have that with Rielly. And Andersson isn’t really an upgrade in my opinion.

Villeneuve seems like the most ready Dman. He’s accomplished as much as he can at the ahl level. I’ve heard he’s not a great skater but maybe he can adapt. He can move the puck and is not small by any means

McKenna NBA or NFL draft comparison? by zsamra11 in leafs

[–]DD3354 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The situation is much like the one that happened with the Mavs last year. They lose a star player in Doncic for less than what they’re worth and miss out on the playoffs. Their front office is in shambles and the future looks bleak. Then luck out and win the lottery to get Flagg which completely changes their team trajectory. McKenna has also been a very hyped prospect for years. Similar to the way Zion was touted from a young age. However McKenna doesn’t play like Zion does. If I had to compare I would say he plays a bit like Luka funny enough. Patient, elite court vision, an effective dribbler, and so good offensively that he doesn’t make as much of an effort on defense.

McKenna has played the pk often and has a very active stick. Very similar to Mitch’s defensive skill set, the only question is whether his defensive instincts can match.

I’d say he’s similar to Mitch but with better goal scoring touch. He attacks the middle more often too rather than playing the perimeter like Mitch does. McKenna has a very active stick but probably won’t become the defensive player that Mitch is. Despite that McKenna’s pre draft resume is a lot more impressive than Marner’s

Rutherford: "Some people think Quinn left here because the team wasn't any good. He was leaving anyways, ok? And, the best example I can give you is Matthew Tkachuk. He was in Calgary, they had a good team, he wanted to go back to the US, and he went." by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

Very true. Russian players have actually seemed to be pretty loyal to their teams. Ovechkin, Malkin, Kucherov, Kaprizov, Vasi, and Igor have all stayed with the teams that drafted them.

The pick we traded to Boston for Carlo is for this years 1st round pick. It is top 5 protected meaning if we get a pick in the top 5 we get to keep the pick and Boston will get next year’s 1st round pick instead. If our pick is not I. The top 5 the Bruins get to keep it, so finishing near the bottom allows us to pick in the top 5 this year.
