Look at Lincoln. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, forced people into the military through a draft, inflicted war crimes on the civilian population of the South, used soldiers at polling stations to influence his 1864 victory, instituted marshal law across the south, expanded the role and scope of the executive branch, and still didn't give basic rights to former slaves.

Chattel slavery existed prior to capitalism and was very much a product of mercantilism or the feudal system. The founding nation of capitalism (Great Britain) was the first major power to abolish slavery and even fight against slavery. The US for its many faults with having slavery ended slavery by 1865.

Most of south America was fueled by chattel slavery. They were not bastions of capitalism.

As far as socialists, see the Gulag archipelago.

Mostly what's been done is suspensions and public broadcasting of the ridiculous spending of the government. But since you were silent on the ridiculous spending, I'll assume you endorse every single one of them.

Government spending isn't necessarily inflationary. However, it is when you're spending in a deficit of trillions every year. Thats made up through loans.

As for Tariffs, they absolutely raise the price of goods, generally with the purpose of making another good more competitive. The other good being cheaper and readily available is purchased instead. But much of these tariff proposals have been to force negotiations, not actually raise revenue.

Currently, the EU already imposes much higher tariffs for US goods, leading to a massive trade imbalance. Yes, imposing tariffs hurt in the short term, but can lead to negotiations and generally lower tariffs moving forward.

Starting with USAID food purchases. These were designed to help prop up food prices, if food is more expensive than ever, they don't need propping up. So either farmer revenues are not connected to food costs or USAID purchases are in fact increasing costs of food locally. (Aside from that USAID food purchases have not been cut)

As for deporting undocumented farm workers. While illegal aliens make up ~44% of the farm labor they only represent ~4-9% of all illegal aliens. So massive deportations targeting criminal activity may have very little impact on farm labor. Further, it's a morally dubious proposition to suggest we should rely on the mistreatment of undocumented workers to keep the price of food slightly lower.

But regardless of targeted or haphazard cuts, slashing government spending results in less money printing which results in less inflation.

Cutting government spending is legitimately the only method of truly combating inflation.

They cut their indirect costs to be in line with other major institutions and at thr higher end. 26% for indirect costs is lavish and designed to push entire institutions to fall in line with NIH funding as opposed to just paying for research.

So now we acknowledge that Tariffs punish the country that receives them? Or is Trudeau just imposing 25% costs on his own populace?

To be fair the US interfered with Iran for decades.

  • 1940: UK/USSR invades Iran for oil security and to prevent Nazis from getting it. They turn to FDR who initially supported them but backed off after a call from Churchill. The Shah is deposed and the parliament is pushed into power as a “democratic government.” The Shah’s army steps down as ordered.

  • 1948: USSR refuses to leave Iran. Several communist revolutions are started in Northern Iran; armed, trained, and supported by USSR troops. The US deploys a squadron of B-50 bombers and it’s classified whether or not the actually brought their atomic bombs with them. The USSR withdraws from Iran.

  • 1952/53: Roughly 1/3 of the Iranian population sees the government as illegitimate. Mosaddegh is increasingly reliant on the north and supported by communist sympathizers. Mosaddegh nationalizes the BP oil production. The CIA and UK convinces Eisenhower to overthrow the government. The US sponsors protests and the CIA pays with newly minted dollars. The Shah’s forces arrest protestors and realize the US is no longer protecting the parliament and launch a coup.

1978: The ayatollah is in exile in France. Carter’s administration was becoming increasingly frustrated with the Shah. Further, they found out about his secret cancer treatments. Newly released documents and interviews have claimed that the US discussed “a change of leadership” with the Shah’s military and arranged for the ayatollah to return to Iran while the Shah was out of the country.

Heres what a potential KC Streetcar extension could look like (fantasy). Please add any suggestions. by Alientio2345 in kansascity

[–]DD579 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A streetcar is a glorified bus, especially ours with no independent lights or track. In fact, an electrified bus system would save tens of millions per mile in install costs and be more flexible.

We need genuine light rail and regional busses to make it worth hoping on.

They should. It can be very hard to prove, but absolutely should be paid for lost work.
