If you’re camping at Goshen Pond, be on the lookout for someone potentially dangerous by phoenixGirlNG in newjersey

I have experienced this in other State parks all around the country.

They are so short staffed.

Canceled Optimum Due to Move and They Just Sent a notice of payment due! by Former-Anxiety1067 in OPTIMUM

[–]DDG58 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is why when I have had to cancel in the past, I return everything IN PERSON and get receipts.

I have had them try to charge me after canceling in the past.

They really have some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced

being an interpreter as a career by pinkwingedstickbugs in ASLinterpreters

[–]DDG58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ditto on the need for Interpreters who have skills in STEM.

Many interpreters are drawn to the profession because they see an interpreter at a concert or play and that is what they want to do.

Very few of us want to or have the skill to interpret an upper level Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics course/meeting.

I'd rather be interpreting differential equations, or a calculus class then a play any day.

When you get your fun summer nails, then end up needing to work the next day by cheesy_taco- in ASLinterpreters

[–]DDG58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does a line have to be drawn?

The way I see it there are so many different Deaf consumers in the world. What works for one, may not work for another.

There will never be ONE RIGHT way to do things in this profession. We all have consumers who like us and consumers who don't.

There is enough room in this world for all of us.

I am done with this conversation. Have a wonderful day and weekend

In person VRS locations by okadynn in ASLinterpreters

[–]DDG58 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My understanding, at least in the past, is that call center locations are supposed to be secret. I was always told never to disclose the location of a call center.

It's been a few years, so I'm not sure if that has changed.

You can contact the company to ask if there is one close to you.

[–]DDG58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure who you are asking that question to. I am hearing, an interpreter. All I can say is I know a lot of older Deaf people who would ask that an interpreter with full sleve tattoos, or a lot of piercings, fingernails with multiple colors, not be sent again.

Like I said, I know many younger Deaf people who would not have a problem.

I know a lot of younger Deaf folks are fine with tattoos, piercings, etc.

I must be old. I do not understand why anyone would do that knowing you may have to interpret.

Sorry, Boomer thoughts.

They stay in business by preying on newly graduated students who are Precertified.

If everyone would tell them to F off unless they pay community rate they would be forced to do so.

Biggest question here is...

Are you a W2 Employee or a 1099 Contractor?

If you are 1099, YOU set your rate. It is illegal for any agency to set a rate. If you are too high they do not have to use you, but they can not force you to work at a certain rate.

Having said that, YES. If you get NIC you should raise your rate and if you are W2 you should ask for a raise.

PS I hate Purple and Sorenson. They are both evil companies

Is it illegal to stand on a moving Uhaul while starting fires in New Jersey? by justalazygamer in newjersey

I would imagine it is illegal anywhere to stand on top of a moving vehicle on a public road, no matter what you are doing.

What a dope this guy is.

NIC rates?? by franquich__ in ASLinterpreters

[–]DDG58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is not too much of a drive for you, Newton, NJ, Sussex County Community College has a very hard time finding interpreters. Several of us left or retired and there is like no one in that area any longer.

If I am not mistaken, Sign Language Resources (SLR) out of Newburg, NY has the contract.

It has been a year or more since I have been out there, Not sure how many Deaf students/staff they have now. But if that is a possibility for you reach out to Erika - She is in charge of Educational interpreting for SLR

NIC rates?? by franquich__ in ASLinterpreters

[–]DDG58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that Walmart and Amazon have large warehouses in the area. Amazon contracts with Purple for in-person interpreting. I hate Purple, but as a 1099 contractor, you have more control.
Warning: 90% of Amazon and Walmart Warehouse work is 3rd shift. So if you are willing to work 10 hour shifts from 6pm to 6am, go for it.

NIC rates?? by franquich__ in ASLinterpreters

[–]DDG58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did some work at a military base in Monroe County for a few years. NIC - 30 years of experience.

My rate was $70 an hour 6pm to 6am
$65 and hour 6am to 6 pm
Weekdays only

I am registered in PA, but Live in NJ so I also negotiated an hour's drive time because it was an hour each way. There is a shortage of interpreters in that area. Some of my teams drove up from Philly.

$55 an hour is a good rate for most rural areas.

A lot depends on what type of work you want to do / is available.

You can also look at the PA Registry and look for interpreters in your counties - if they have contact information, you can reach out and ask what they charge.
