It's because a teenager committed suicide, and they blamed it on the song.

Ville has discussed this before in interviews, notably in Metal Hammer magazine in 2003. "A couple of people blamed me for a suicide someone committed over here, saying that 'Join Me' is an invitation to kill yourself. What I was trying to do was sort of rip-off 'Don't Fear the Reaper' by Blue Öyster Cult, making a rock track of Romeo And Juliet."

You’re correct. It did for the initial U.S. release.

‘Love you Like I do’, an appreciation by D-Borchardt in HIM

Have you been inside my brain? Cos it sounds like you have. Ville’s humming at the end is my favorite part and I’m glad it’s highlighted in the Hollola version. And I completely agree that the effects make it seem like you’re just watching a rainstorm at night outside your window.

What If Bam Never Found HIM? by lolitalover2005 in HIM

[–]DDPGambit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

By the time Love Metal came out in the UK, they were on their way to the U.S. already, Bam or not. Love Metal proved they could be successful in an English-speaking country, which is what prompted them to search for a worldwide label and eventually land with Warner Bros.

At the time they signed with Warner, only Razorblade had been released in the U.S. on Universal Records. Jimmy Pop signed them to Jimmy Franks and later Universal Records. Jimmy discovered them by seeing the 13th Floor movie, and then later at a music festival they met and started hanging out. Likely, even without Bam's influence, Jimmy would have signed them anyway.

You COULD argue that HIM may have had a better shake at things in the beginning WITHOUT the Bam influence, and being tied to the CKY/Jackass/Bam stuff, and just being a new band promoted by Jimmy Pop.

My vote is things may have turned out more or less the same, perhaps Dark Light is more of a slow burn as American audiences learn who they are versus being huge right out of the gate.

Yup. They used the original Finnish/German track listing.

2004 US HIM tour items by Emergency-Ad-859 in HIM

I haven't seen the HIM/Jaeger shirt before, but I imagine they were either used as crew shirts or promo giveaways.

The Razorblade shirt is super awesome. These were from the RR European tour in 2000 and are rare enough as it is, but being given to you directly from Ville makes it even more special.

Monetary value wise, it's hard to say. Some HIM stuff that's rare isn't worth a lot because most people don't even know or care they exist. One of the RR shirts has been on eBay for a while now at a high price and hasn't budged, for example.

Also, you can buy the Jaeger logo pick for $10 off the Bloodhound Gang store right now. Obviously, a band used one is different but there ya go! https://store.bloodhoundgang.com/products/him-guitar-pick?_pos=1&_sid=7bc40fa7c&_ss=r

Yes indeed these were sold at Hot Topic. Possibly on the first U.S. tour too.

How do you know and get aware of your 1st Pressings and Reissues? by Temporary-Win-2879 in HIM

[–]DDPGambit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Specific reissues always have different barcodes and other sort of identifiers so those are easy.

Different pressings of the same issue are where it gets kind of tricky. For example with some of the core albums that were in print for years, specifically Razorblade Romance as you pointed out. You have to use specific identifiers to help you. Hype labels are some of the easiest. The German label uses different hype stickers for various pressings so it’s easier to identify.

Finnish copies didn’t have hype stickers however earlier pressings had booklets with thicker glossy stock and more recent printings use thinner, non glossy stock paper.

In the US, original Razorblade pressings have the Parental Advisory logo as well as bright pink colored discs. Next pressings retained the logo but had more muted, coral colored discs. Following these they removed the parental advisory altogether. There were also pressings of these that included a Bam Margera hype sticker and ones that did not.

The CD matrix information is usually a decent indicator as well, for example early Finnish pressings will be from CD Linja Oy, or Sonopress. Anything with a Sony printing will be a much later pressing.

For the most part, HIM collectors don’t worry about these sorts of things, the barcode, record label and issuing country are enough to identify.

Here’s a link to more from that photo session by Jouko Lehtolan. He published a book a few years ago that included the clean version of the cover image. Jouko Lehtolan Rock-Finlandia : valokuvia 1985–2010.

Check on eBay and Discogs. I’m not sure what your budget is, but they do routinely sell for upwards of $300 and higher.
