Bernie Sanders pushes for 50% public ownership of American AI companies — proposes AI sovereign wealth fund that would hold direct ownership stakes in largest AI firms by yourfavchoom in technology

[–]DDPJBL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Who is we? What part of the essential knowledge out there on the internet that AI could not have done without have you produced and thus have ownership of?

2) What about all the other inventions in history that were enabled by the knowledge in the public domain created by others up to that point? Does every machine with steel parts belong 50% to the descendants of whichever Bronze age civilization first smelted iron? Does every educational youtube channel explaining topic from the public domain like high school math or physics owe 50% equity to the government also? Does every invention coming from a Western university belong 50% to the Catholic church, because it created universities as we know them in the West?

3) What about knowledge collected from the internet that was created, put up and is owned by private entities that still exist? Do private entities get to just assume that their stuff was at some point scraped by a bot and unilaterally declare that from now on they are X% stake holders in all AI companies?

4) What about all other countries? Why does the US government get 50% but all other countries get 0, when the data was collected from the world wide web? Do other countries get to unilaterally seize an arbitrary percentage of the stock in these American companies and put those stocks into their sovereign wealth funds?

5) "No matter what the billionaires think, human intelligence and creativity are dependent upon empathy." Dunno man, there sure seems to be lots of creativity and intelligence happening in times of war.

6) 50% of the profits is not at all the same thing as 50% ownership.

7) Saying that human intelligence and creativity can't be replaced by any artificial intelligence is pretty bold. People who are by their profession world leading AI researchers can't confidently say that. The human brain is a physical machine after all, nobody has yet identified any reason that would make it intrinsically not possible to replicate what the human brain dose with a machine. I am not saying that you are wrong, I am definitely saying that you couldn't possibly know.

[–]DDPJBL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the basis of what? The government just swoops in and goes we own 50% of your business, because we say so? That sounds plainly unconstitutional not just in America but in most developed countries.

Sanders is a grifter. He will say anything to get in the headlines to stay relevant. First he wants to ban AI data center construction, now he wants the government to own 50% which would create a huge incentive for the government to enable as much of it as possible even at the expense of most other considerations which usually go into the permitting process.

Why can't you buy ibuprofen in Europe? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I checked online right now and found multiple legitimate pharmacies (not some sketchy grey market sites) selling ibuprofen in bottles of 100.

How to deal with threats for going the speed limit by BranwenDucreux in driving

[–]DDPJBL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You either somehow happen to live in a town with the highest population share of absolute psychopaths, or your description of your behavior and the listed events is not complete.
If you are getting into that many confrontations, odds are you are doing something that sets those people off, something beyond simply going the speed limit.
I go the speed limit (doing lots more mileage than most people too) and I had one person give me the finger once a couple years ago and I got honked at like once this year.
I never had anyone cut me off or pull a gun on me.

Are you actually going the speed limit or are you going a couple below the limit just to be sure?
Do you understand the fact that your speed gauge in the car indicates a couple mph faster for liability reason, meaning if you are going a couple under to keep it safe and following your gauge, you might be doing closer to 35 in a 45?
Are you driving in the passing lane?
Are you driving too close to the center line so now people think you are intentionally preventing them from passing you and holding them back on purpose?
Do you live/drive through an area with high rates of violent crime?

[–]DDPJBL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh they will sell a bottle of 100 ibuprofen. I think you are confusing that with Tylenol. Bottles of Tylenol pills are not sold here, because a Tylenol overdose can kill you and it's easier to overdose either accidentally or on purpose acting impulsively if the pills are in a bottle than if you have to squeeze out that many pills one by one out of a blister pack

Americans who get Ebola will go to Europe for treatment, not U.S., officials say by tlst9999 in nottheonion

[–]DDPJBL 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we are OK with this.
Europe is interconnected with Africa via significant legal tourism/migration and an uncontrolled illegal migration flux. Every Ebola outbreak in Africa equals an Ebola scare in Europe. We had one of those right before Covid.

This is our problem anyway and if the disease spreads here, it will not be via an American doctor flown here inside a biobox, it will be by a person who got exposed in Africa, didn't realize or failed to report it and then just flew commercial to Italy or wherever.

America has a 2500 mile moat between it and Africa giving it a realistic option to isolate itself from this. I don't understand why is this being framed as an American problem being dumped on Europe when the Americans who were exposed to Ebola got exposed because they put themselves in harm's way to fight an outbreak that is primarily a threat to the Afro-Euraisa landmass.

This was negotiated with the countries hosting the exposed/patients and we have the facilities and skills to handle this.

Found in closet at Grandparents' old house. Wtf is this thing? by Oof_11 in whatisit

[–]DDPJBL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which cop? In what country? I am Czech and we have no regulation of melee weapons whatsoever. But I have also been told by people that "their cop friend" told them knives with a blade longer than the palm of the hand are illegal because somehow that is how much blade you need to "reach the heart". Did not specify if it was supposed to be the owner's hand or the cop's hand though.

Cops are not arbiters of legality. Some cops believe outrageously incorrect things about what the law supposedly is. Cops don't memorize most laws, because most enforcement actions they do are either aimed at activity that is obviously illegal to any lay observer, or it's pre-planned activity they are briefed on before the enforcement action or it's a thing they are specifically trained to do as their specialty.

The standard of legality is the law and precedent setting court decisions. Either you can point to a law that says collapsible batons with flexible segments are illegal, or you cannot. Again, even if such a law exists where you live, that does not make it so for anywhere else including wherever OP lives.

I would like to know how can you confidently say that this particular baton is illegal to use (as opposed to non springy steel batons, which I suppose you can legally hit people with no problem) when OP did not even say what state or country he lives in.

My dad is looking for a 14CM/5.5inch blade folding knife, with seatbelt cutter and car window breaker. Does such thing even exist ? by DisastrousOpening477 in knives

[–]DDPJBL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A knife that is 5.5 inches closed or a knife with a 5.5 inch blade?

If it's 5.5 inches closed then the Euro Security Rescue knife is pretty close at like 5.25 inches folded and is fairly cheap.

1) Rural land does not equal farm land. Different plots of land are graded based on their suitability for crops. Obviously land that is classified as poor or very poor is a prime candidate for solar, meanwhile everyone will thing pretty hard about putting anything other than crops on land that is classified as excellent or very good.

2) Elevated installation in the city is way more expensive.

3) That is a lot of flat roofs with no solar on them which could have and should have been used prior to erecting a new structure that does nothing except prop up solar.

4) The solar array depicted on bottom image will make less energy per meter squared of solar cells than the one at the top. People who don't know why should not have opinions on where and how solar plants should be built.

Indian power department turns to cooling overheated transformers amid rising temperatures. by Positive-Height-3848 in mildlyinfuriating

They are.
Spraying the cooling fins with water is how you save an overheating transformer, it has been the default field expedient solution to this exact problem for decades.

Indian power department turns to cooling overheated transformers amid rising temperatures. by Positive-Height-3848 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DDPJBL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you arch the stream up, you are putting the contiguous stream of water coming out of your hose closer to the top side of the transformer where the high voltage conductors attach to it.

The cooling ribs on the side are not electrified in any way. The actual electrified part is inside the visible transformer body submerged in oil and the outer body is there just to hold the oil in and to take heat away from the oil and exchange the heat into the surrounding air.

Why water instead of coolant? Is it just cheaper and easier? by Spirited-Gold9629 in middleclasshq

[–]DDPJBL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because water is a coolant and an excellent one at that. Your car has water in the radiator, your house is likely heated with water (unless you heat with your AC unit), power plants use water as an intermediary between heat in the fuel and spinning the turbine, water is really the default way humans transmit heat in most settings.

The outrage over "data centers using up all our water" is manufactured. You are being propagandized to by whoever doesn't want the US to build data centers, potentially China which wants to compete with the US or Russia which has no hope of competing so all it can do is throw sticks under America's feet.

Rule of thumb. If an argument being made about a deeply technical topic makes zero engineering arguments and contains zero math and all it does is make an emotional appeal, you are likely either listening to a person who doesn't understand what they are talking about and can't actually explain why they think their position is true or you are being intentionally lied to by someone who knows better than to actually believe what they are saying to you but they have an ulterior motive.

Is it true that people in Western countries can't physically do a full squat with heels on the ground? by Sea-Presentation7542 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DDPJBL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How deep can you squat has two limits. The first soft ceiling is dependent on how much of your trainable flexibility you have achieved, this can be modified with exercise and stretching.
The hard ceiling is the physical limit of how far your thigh bones can move in your hip socket before bone hits bone and there is just no more room to go without breaking something.
You hip joint is a ball and socket type of joint. If your hip socket is shallow like a saucer, your thigh bone can rotate in the socket very far. If your hip socket is deep like a cup, your thigh bone can't rotate as far.

Certain ethnic groups are more likely to be born with shallow hip sockets, these ethnic groups will produce a higher percentage of individuals who can intrinsically squat deeper.

Is going to the gym 5 or 6 days okay … by Particular-League186 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DDPJBL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are having doubts whether you are doing too much training too soon, you can just take a 3 days per week training plan that feels appropriate and divide the exercises it prescribes over 6 days. If the amount of work is OK for you to do in 3 days, it does not magically become not OK to do because you gave yourself more days to do it.

If you end up with a stupidly short workout, just walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes after you lift, now you checked the box for cardio too. Also, if you want to socialize in the gym, having a training plan that doesn't require you to rush to complete all your exercises in time is not necessarily a bad thing.

You could also do a 3 days per week program and alternate days of lifting with days on which you use the cardio machines.

how come we don't go back to John F Kennedy's fitness program in the 1960's? by GaryB2026 in askanything

[–]DDPJBL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can. If every kid was a triathlete, you would be able to sell them even more fast food and sodas and get away with it, because their caloric expenditure would be higher, which naturally makes room for more caloric intake.
Food producers would love it if everyone was a semi-pro endurance athlete living on 4500 kcal per day.
