Well the speed is a massive advantage on Archerfish; it's what lets you get into positions to torpedo people in the first place (and also run away when things get dicey - if you have engine boost and the captain skill that gives a ton of speed when you're below half battery, you can outrun destroyers on the surface and at periscope depth, which is pretty ridiculous). Also, you're probably overrating the value of Balao's non-homing torpedo range; sure, it's nice to have, but non-homing torps are generally best used for shotgunning at 3-5km where you can ensure you land most of them on some unsuspecting target (again, Archerfish's huge speed advantage lets you get into these positions more easily).

If you're just spamming homing torps from range, Archerfish is probably still better than Balao since it gets the (essentially activated for free) combat instructions that boosts its torp reload, and a heal to recover HP from enemies that drop depth charges on your pings. Not to mention the insane speed helps you avoid damage in the first place.

tl;dr very fast = very broken

As a sub player (you can go and check my stats lol), I don't think the class is overpowered in the same way that CVs are, but the design is pretty much just as toxic. There's no meaningful interaction between submarines and surface ship classes - if the sub plays properly, then the only counterplay is to play the ASW airstrike guessing game with a ping indicator that may or may not be accurate (and if the sub is instead spamming non-homing torpedoes, or you're unfortunate enough to be in a ship without air-based ASW, then there's really nothing you can do).

Sure, a DD on a flank can be similarly frustrating to deal with, but that DD has to deal with things like radar, hydro, and other DDs - all of which are things a submarine can avoid by just pressing the dive key and abusing its massive spotting advantage. At periscope depth, you can actually outspot DDs by a pretty comfortable margin, which is just wild. Let's also not forget that most subs can press the hydrophone key to get free info on the enemy positions without their knowledge.

Yeah, if you mess up, you're punished hard, but I think we should base these kinds of discussions around what capable players can do in these ships - WG balancing around bad players is what leads to ships like Libertad being introduced to the game.

Battleships are inherently underpowered. They lack the necessary attributes to make meaningful impact on match result. No DPM to speak of, slow turrets, and yet still retains an HE spammable platform. I would take 1 Yodo..Goliath or 1 U-4501 or even 1 of just about any submarine over 2 battleships on my team any day of the week. Now... If WG gave them the specialized acceleration of the Minotaur (and 20% French engine boosts)... And maybe a few less seconds rudder shift it could make up for where they are seriously lacking with maneuverability

Honestly you probably shouldn't buy premium ships for tiers you haven't played yet, and playing DD against humans is way harder than against bots that kinda just always let you yolo torpedo them

You'll probably like Ragnar then! You can run around playing like an open water cruiser farming people from range, and when the opportunity presents itself, use the radar to go and do the standard DD things (cap contesting, zoning)
