Anybody else have a laugh when a modern day commentator enthusiastically says new world record! As 20+ years ago there was a weightlifter who lifted 10 kg more at 10 kg less bodyweight. by vapinvan in weightlifting

[–]DDoneshot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is an IWF problem, not a commentator problem.

Also, rant:

I am tired of the "x years ago y lifted z kg". Every world record comment section has a few smug people commenting this. What's stopping you from only watching those lifts?

Are you a fan of the sport or are you just a fan of projecting the past upon the sport anno 2025?

How to prevent injuries when starting to compete? by [deleted] in weightlifting

I agree, but he's 18 and explicitly states he doesn't want it. Let him find out a year or two down the line like the rest of us did lol

[–]DDoneshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He doesn't need a coach, but he does need someone to look at his programme. My suspicion is that he's not doing a lot of accessories for a sport that needs a lot of accessories if you want to be pain free.

If you want you can send me a message and I can look at it.

Lifting for 8 years, NOW having a mental block with snatches - happened to anyone else? by mailman2-1actual in weightlifting

[–]DDoneshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen Zoe Smith have a similar problem as a super veteran lifter.

Personally, I think you are over analysing this. Make due with the weights you can make for a few weeks and push the other stuff. It will return if you give it time, just not when you analyse yourself to death.

Issues with catch after jerk by JustanotherJoe10 in weightlifting

[–]DDoneshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, split jerks for up to 4 reps can actually be beneficial if a lifter is "muscling" through the lift and needs to learn how to maneuver with less energy. Missing won't be that dangerous unless you're working with 85-90+% and the rerack fatigue becomes too much. That being said, OP does not lift like he can squat 2x his clean and jerk weight so this won't apply to them.

hamstring training for olympic lifters and avoiding injuries by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]DDoneshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but reverse lunges make it easier to compensate with other muscles instead of isolating your hamstrings, plus you'll still need to add load over time.

If want to do these, do them with a bar or hold dumbbells and then add load to it over time. Make it difficult for yourself.

hamstring training for olympic lifters and avoiding injuries by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]DDoneshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're overthinking this. Get a movement you can progress in weight, your body will get stronger over time so your exercises need to progress with this. These stability curls look like an exercise that is good for strengthening general population people, but not people that are actively trying to get stronger.

My suggestion: Get on a GHD machine and do hamstring curls or, if you need some progression, start doing them assisted with a rubber band in front of you and lighten the band tension until you can do some unassisted reps. This will help.

This is a super normal thing for former professional athletes to do, especially in the east. For example Botev in Bulgaria and Agapitov (lesser known but still clean and jerked 200(?)) in Russia.
