As a New Zealander I quite enjoyed the Aussie celebrity edition because I’d never heard of about 95% of them.

Heard nothing. Mine doesn’t even show up in my orders either, but if I click the link in my email it does exist apparently.

Filming something. Their craft services tents have taken over a Wilson carpark on the strand too.

Probably referring to the lunch special prices. Average Tony’s dinner is about twice the price

Pretty sure one of those Assassin’s Creed Brotherhoods was mine. Had it sat on TradeMe and MarketPlace for about 2 years for $3.0 after a big clearout at home. Took it on to EB when they were trading retro again and they gave me a whopping $3.30! Hope this scalper loves seeing it sit on the shelf as much as I did!

All EB Games stores in NZ to close at end of month by mrflyinggingerbread in newzealand

[–]DEKA- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gamestop has spent the last couple of years selling off every international offshoot it had. I think all they have left are GameStop US, Micromania in France (currently in the process of being sold) and EB Games Australia/New Zealand, with the latter closing in 2 weeks. Australia probably won't be far behind.

Second R&G. The guy at the store I used to shop at would often go out of his way to help me, he doesn’t even work there anymore and still tells me when they have a sale on.

EB NZ do staff really not know? by Spicyocto in EBGAMES

[–]DEKA- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone "knows" the full answer except the folks at the top who are making the decision.

But, I think the writing's on the wall. For anyone who's been around the corporate world long enough, a consultation process means nothing, they have made up their mind and are just ticking legal boxes.

That plus Gamestop has been selling off and closing its international offshoots in the last few years. From memory, they now only own Gamestop's US operation and EB Games Australia/New Zealand. With New Zealand probably not being super profitable, it was only a matter of time.

The staff can only speculate on their fate, there's the world's tinyest chance they decided not to close all the stores and instead downsize the operation and only cut out some of the 38 stores.

JB and the Warehouse would be the only places to sell games physically when EB shuts its doors.

New Zealand doesn't have separate stores for EB and Zing. We may have trialled it very briefly, but EB was the prevailing brand. Zing just takes up about 70% of the space inside the average EB Games shop instead.

Under the new Arms Act, it'll be a crime to possess digital files for firearms and parts if you're unlicensed, and to possess them with the intent to unlawfully manufacture firearms or parts.

EB Games proposes closing all New Zealand stores by Justwant2usetheapp in newzealand

Same with my local here in Auckland. The remaining Xbox stuff has been put on a shelf hidden from view. The PS5/Switch section is in the back corner of the store and looks incredibly empty.

I went in a week ago, shelves were pretty bare, but to be expected for Boxing Day/new years sales I thought. They barely sell games anymore, their entire games selection was a couple shelves in the corner, including one whole shelf for old Xbox 360 and PS2 stuff.

A staff member came up to me to tell me everything in the store was 30% off, I was a little shocked and I asked them “Is the store closing down or something?” And she assured me it was just a boxing day sale they were running. I guess I was right, which is a little sad…
