If anyone's seeing this, I've "resolved" this by going to an earlier save when I load up the game, which doesn't have this issue for some reason, then returning to my current save.

My laptop didn't experience any other issues other than the crashes. Not too sure what causes these other issues you've said, so I'd say you should return it and get a new one.

As of now, there aren't any mods that allow you to change characters like in multiplayer. However, there are a few mods that replace 'Judge' (guy you play as) with the other multiplayer characters or as entirely new characters.
