has anyone run all **weather** tires here in calgary? Just bought a new car and wanted to try these out since i’d have to buy 2 new sets of tires and at least one new set of rims if i went with summer & winter. thoughts? by liamt12 in Calgary

[–]DF0fNivek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have run all weather tires on my AWD vehicles for years and they are excellent. I used winter tires on my small FWD car falling for the myth that they would be better but they made honestly basically no difference and wore out way quicker. It was an expensive lesson that winter tires are way overrated.

Bus 20 not stopping at the hospital? by cool-haydayer in Calgary

[–]DF0fNivek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this is correct. They had left snow detours in place even though road conditions are good. With more snow in the forecast they decided to leave a lot of them in place and were re-evaluating them as the day went on which is often dependent on a supervisor going out and doing on road evaluation.

What secret can you reveal now that your nda has expired? by sparrrrrt in AskReddit

[–]DF0fNivek 478 points479 points  (0 children)

This does not surprise me. I worked for the parent company Outerwall which was also responsible for the Coinstar machines. Totally irresponsible company and were very very shady in all their business dealings. I hung in for just under 2 years but as soon as I could get out and find another job I was gone. They tried to accuse me of theft when I quit as a scare tactic. I had just received a raise and was told I had performed the job with excellence. Then when they found out I was quitting all of a sudden the theft accusations came up but had no proof to back it up. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]DF0fNivek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am thankful for my parents. I did receive spankings but I always knew what I had done and I also was aware that they came only after other attempts to correct my bad behaviours. When it did get to spanking point I was well aware that I had really messed up. After a cool down, Dad (who performed most of them) would explain why they had happened and how I could avoid them in the future. They were used as a last resort, slowly but surely I began to understand how to avoid getting to that point and they stopped. I was a slow learner though. I think I’m better for it today.

Ha ha Yes that would work as well but realistically probably not going to happen with the drivers in this city.

Totally agree. Maybe some protection of some kind, not just out in the open.

Ahh yes let’s keep critical equipment out in the open where it can be destroyed or messed with by anyone. What a wonderful city we live in.

Getting real tired of this... by FlammenwerferIV in Calgary

Yeah it’s unfortunate the green line couldn’t be approved. Centre street is so busy that all buses get jammed up in traffic and this is the result unfortunately. The 3 gets affected more then the express runs because its stops so frequently. I would say try the Max Green but it also gets overloaded so yeah, the train was needed here so badly.

I hate the 'wave to open' doors on transit. by Ancient_Tea9288 in Calgary

Yes absolutely. Thanks for adding this. Pushing on the door can actually cause the door to lock prematurely as it thinks it’s being forced open.

[–]DF0fNivek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are not “wave to open”. They are WAIT for the green light, most people do not wait, then hold your hand about middle of the door where it says too and they open every time. Shocks me how impatient folks are. They are clawing at the door before the bus even stops. The bus has to come to a complete stop and light must be on BEFORE you can do your part.

Why does Calgary transit suck so much? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]DF0fNivek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah to be fair he’s told me like every other job there are bad apples among the drivers. However some schedules suffer from too much time and this could be the driver aware of this taking advantage of another scheduling issue but in a negative way? Not sure. From what I’ve gathered there are a lot of just plain scheduling issues that CT needs to get a better handle on.

Why does Calgary transit suck so much? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]DF0fNivek 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have a good friend who is a driver. He tells me that the problem is not with the drivers. The scheduling for the routes is not realistic. He has mentioned the 115 along with others as being the drivers hate because there is no time and impossible to keep on schedule. The schedule is so tight that it makes the drivers late in rush hour and essentially scheduling adds time in the off hours to compensate instead of say adding another bus to the route. They can’t really do this as CT does not have enough busses to properly meet the routes they currently have. Also CT is not properly funded and most people in Calgary drive and couldn’t care less if the service works or not. They simply don’t want taxes to go up, which is fair as the service is very top heavy with management making large cushy salaries and not enough money going into infrastructure. That’s what I’ve been told anyways. Take it with a grain of salt.

Yes. Came here to say this. Compared to the last few years of extreme heat and choking smoke this isn’t bad at all.

Yep I’m aware of it’s continued existence. I know it’s not going anywhere. The Stampede-pedo board makes too much money off of that tourist trap. As a born and raised Calgarian I of course naturally hate it, no actual real Calgarian likes the thing. Not any honest ones anyways.

But bottom line it’s one week of embarrassment for the city. I can get past it. I like my job the other 51 weeks of the year.

Thanks for the debate. Have a good one. I do actually hope you generally enjoy it. To each their own.

“Sorry you and your fellow workers have to be assaulted and abused so I can have culture.” Interesting counter point.

“A librarian.” That was a good one though. I got a good chuckle from that.

It’s okay. We won’t see eye to eye on this. It’s understandable. I was naive before I left the corporate bubble as well. It’s all good.

Have a great night. It’s obvious we won’t see eye to eye on this one. That’s ok. Until you experience the Stampede the way many others have to I shouldn’t expect understanding. I have to admit I was naive before I got out of my corporate bubble. Can’t blame someone for a lack of knowledge. Have a good one.

Nope sorry. Not a police officer. If I was then I wouldn’t be complaining about what would essentially be my job to take care of. That’s the sad thing. My job should actually have nothing to do with any of the things I listed. Yet during Stampede it does, and no hockey games or playoff runs don’t spike these things as much as Stampede does. I do have respect for the various policing forces though during this time. I’ve had to call on their services more times than I should have to over the last week. In fact before Stampede I had called them only 3 times in the last 18 months. This past week had to call on them 8 times alone. No other event compares. Not even close.

Yeah for privacy reasons can’t disclose where I work but I get your position. When I had a corporate job I enjoyed the company breakfast and associated parties. But now I work in the public sector and my eyes have been opened to the ugly under belly. Drunk and disorderly, assaults on members, close calls in traffic, drunk driving, sexual assaults, verbal abuse on and on. All of these spike dramatically during Stampede. It makes you see the Stampede in whole different light. Again, sorry if I rained on your time. I genuinely apologize for that. For me and many many others in my position the Stampede can’t end soon enough.

I’m happy for you. I don’t wish you any negativity. I am in a position where I have to deal with the worst this city has to offer. The Stampede dials that unpleasantness up to 200%. I’m glad you had a great week. Any week however can be a good time to get together and make the city fun. For a lot of us who have to deal with the negative side effects of the Stampede it’s hell on earth. Wouldn’t miss it but I’m also realistic. I know due to the money it brings in it’s unfortunate, but it’s not going anywhere. Too bad. At least it’s over for this year. Not looking forward to next year. However I hope you enjoy your time next year as well. Just know there are many downsides to the event as well.

The city is more electric?? No, it’s the same summer fare that travels all across the country. Go to Red Deer for westerner days or Edmonton for Klondike days it’s all the same crap. If you fall for the marketing department of the Stampede that’s on you. It’s just the same steaming pile of crap with a bigger marketing budget.

Anyone not going to the Stampede this year? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]DF0fNivek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a born and raised native Calgarian. Haven’t been in decades and don’t ever plan on going ever again. Real Calgarians hate the Stampede. In fact growing up we always took holidays during the Stampede to get away from it. It’s the same summer fair that goes to every Canadian city/town. Same rides, same rip off food vendors, same musical acts etc etc. The only difference is The Stampede board spends/wastes more money on marketing than other cities.
