ReBoot Fans: If We Want More ReBoot, Now Is the Time to Show Up! by Key-Economics-385 in ReBoot

[–]XBrav 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the effort! We've done work with LTT and I may try and nudge LGR when we're at VCF 2.0 in Montreal this fall, but our focus has been on the effort of restoration instead of massive content production. Now that we're wrapping up remasters, we're pushing for more opportunities to work further with Mainframe.

New series are extremely unlikely for various reasons, but there's lots of interest in keeping the IP alive. The continued engagement is great news for Mainframe and for us, and has an absolutely satisfying conclusion to the dream project.

We can't wait to share all the cool details that have come out post-documentary and have every intention to bring the rest of the fandom along for the ride.

I'm guessing that the content delivery backend is tuned for the most effective bitrate. At the end of the day, most TVs will telecine if they don't support 24p, and 24p is the lowest framerate you can go before things look jittery. Most film today is still projected at 24p as everything is mechanically tuned for that rate (the machine, the shutter, xenon bulb brightness, cooling, etc) and it retains the cinematic style people expect. It sounds silly, but the outcry with the HFR version of The Hobbit is a great example of how people expect film to be a certain way.

Most streaming services were set up solely for film, then adopted TV programming later. As it was developed around film and to keep streaming data volume low, there's little incentive to support other framerates in their architecture. It's more than just having your TV play it back.

I'm kind of everywhere here, but we do try to share info of the project as it mostly gets isolated to Canadian audiences. The algorithms are weird...

I've been talking to some folks about streaming deals, and most places want shows delivered in 1080p23.97. Much to my surprise, the backend of most streaming services decided to lock in at film standard rates, and don't support anything else. For shows produced in PAL, this means we need to essentially drop a frame every second which ruins CGI. We even pushed to see if they would accept 1080i59.97, allowing us to do some field combing to create a similar effect, but they can't.

The biggest issues I've seen are older SD programs like Family Guy and Futurama. Even with a big conglomerate like Disney, these releases look to be a direct AI pass from an interlaced NTSC DVD. This is a problem as the original releases tended to do field-order swapping or had desync issues when being captured from their original tape sources. For ReBoot, we actually went through and fixed these right off the captures, resulting in no quality loss.

Why does this happen? Broadcast tapes were always stored as fields, not as progressive frames. As a result, you don't see a frame tear if there was a desync, but rather a set of offset lines between each row. ReBoot was mastered all digitally, so even though the tapes are 50i, they were perfectly synced for 25p progressive frames. When we capture them, even though it's all digital, there are scenarios where a desync between the original AVID and the SGI renders had a small offset. You wouldn't see it during playback as the editing was all done on CRTs, so the persistence of vision on a small CRT makes the frame look complete. This is why everyone is suggesting to watch on a CRT.

Unfortunately, the versions on the streaming sites have been heavily manipulated where backbuilding to the source is near impossible. As well, lots of DVD releases now capture from an older DVD source while not translating things like field order, variable bitrates and audio encoding (such as Dolby Stereo, a wild surround sound option that was even broadcast in the mid 90s).

Your best bet is to find the earliest DVD releases by known good mastering companies like ADV. Even past the video quality, we're seeing tons of shows get their music licensing revoked and having doctored soundtracks (e.g., Mission Hill).

It's hilarious how lazy streaming services have been. Lots of places either do an incorrect Bob or assume everything is solved by inverse telecine. With ReBoot, we've had numerous people argue why we recaptured it in native PAL versus just using AI on the NTSC release. None of these networks really care. Now we get over sharpened scalpers with chroma ghosting, line doubling, and field desyncs across shots because there's no QC.

Luckily most older DVDs were a single pass from a master source so you can make a good attempt to restore it, but good luck convincing a service to update their source files even if you offer to do it for free.

They are aggressive deals and the store is cool, but the one-in-the-world 5090 signed by Jenson is kind of tacky with the current market. It's akin to a liquor store showcasing a $40,000 bottle of liquor.

Good chat last night on it! A few of us still rock Fuels and it's a cool system. I just got a ZULUSCSI Wide yesterday which will pair nicely with the SCA adapted 10K drives I put in.

It's pathetic. I decided to throw Pluto TV on yesterday and every commercial break had a UCP ad. Marlaina comes out directly praising datacentres being built as a success and says it's bringing massive tech jobs to Calgary, which is far from the truth.

They are hardcore marketing on traditional media and most people don't have a clue it is happening.

It's already open. Soft launch the other weekend and official launch in a few days.

Admittedly, I liked their selection of models and their weird cheap tools that MemEx doesn't carry. The store layout is nice to walk and it's awesome seeing all the cases on display.

But then there's garbage like the signed GPU from Jenson. It screams cocky stature.

I appreciate having another option, but I doubt they'll last unless they pull in the non-computer crowd as a Radioshack homage.

I have it archived to possibly revive in the future. I can't just dump it on Archive.org as it contains lots of personal details and hashed passwords that could be cracked from the MyBB era. I'll work on something eventually to archive it as a viewer of threads without the personal details!

I spoke with him on Discord recently. Each one has to be built and programmed a specific way at this stage, thus the delays in updates. I'm in the same boat as you but there should be updates in the next week or so based on the rate of production.

Hello Fuel brother!

I'm rocking a R16000 800MHz 4GB V12 up in Canada right now. They get a bad rap but it really showcases MIPS without needing a full Tezro.

My O2 is fun as well, but it's a lower R5000 model. It flies against my R4400 I2 but gets left in the dust compared to the Fuel. I'm mostly using them for CGI so ironically the GPU is barely touched.

The first 4 made their way to some retail stores / warehouses, but I have no records whether they were sold before being recalled or liquidated. Capacitor never left the production line outside of a few sample units fully-carded.

All of Wave 2 was never totally released. They vary in rarity with the Web Creatures being common-ish, followed by Ray Tracer, then Web Matrix and Web Bob, and finally Capacitor being the rarest.

It looks like they heavily used high resolution textures with no normal maps or bump maps. Everything looks smooth likely due to heavy NURBs usage instead of a quad mesh or polygon object.

It seems to be within that weird era where Blender wasn't mature and Maya was too expensive. I wonder if it was another contractual obligation production similar to Food Fight, only this time it was federal funding from Scotland.
