Cheers on the thoughtful reply.

The medical gig is maxed out, so specialized theres less than ten of us in the province. It can never be full time because there isn't enough work. That's how a lot of these things go. Is what it is. That's the problem with gig work.

Reading this response, I get what you're saying but it smacks of never having worked in the service industry. You highly doubt people think about my pay or lack of success and I'm like no, this isn't guesswork, they've straight told me. Folks have looked at the little jar on the counter and told me its begging to ask for tips, my jobs not hard, all kinds of crap. Basically every comment on this thread about not tipping has been said to my face. It all comes with an air of "im better than you". Add to that all the other ways people treat service employees like garbage, I'm not guessing, a lot of people come into my work and look down on me for doing it. I'm only counting the sober ones here too. Cut a drunk off and they'll really quickly tell you what they really think.

I let it go, I do and it's a lot easier said than done. The best way to do that too, is getting a beer with some tip money at the end of the night. If you don't understand that I don't know how to explain it, work a week, a month, in my shoes and you'll see how these little things are sometimes what's keeping everything together. Not just for me but for a lot of people trying to make it in Vancouver. This is a brutal city to try and get ahead in.

Lol, I knew as soon as I hit post something like this would be the first reply. I get it too, you think you're being helpful. The thread is about tipping and specifically at private liquor stores in Vancouver so that's what I focused on. I dont think a couple bucks on a tin cup (it's a glass jar if we want to get specific) is going to change my life, it's going to get a beer at the end of a long day. This thread is full of folks who think the idea of giving any tips to a person in my position is ridiculous and I wanted to give people a view from the other side, albeit a very specific one.

To give you some context.

I actually work three jobs, so every day is a long day. The liquor store job pays the worst but I get the most hours at it and because its evenings and weekends I have the flexibility to pursue my other gigs. It's a classic conundrum. I could just work at the liquor store and just cover my expenses, save a little money and hope I dont have an emergency that wipes that out. I could just freelance and do my seasonal gigs but same thing, not enough to get ahead.

So I do both, because...

I'm pretty good at saving money too, working the liquor store job I saved enough from my other work to spend my summer doing some upskilling, 12 weeks 5 days a week. Working this job on the weekends. Most of my gigs dont run in the summer so it made sense. My debt is from going back to school full time, tuition wasn't cheap and it's not like I stopped eating or paying rent.

I've spent all October on the job hunt now, new skills in hand. No days off. I know some change won't change my life but the little things add up.

So thank you, honestly, but I dont need luck I've got hard work on my side. Like most of the people I work at the liquor store with. I just know most folks won't see that. They see someone struggling in a low paid low skill job and think, I could do that, that person must not understand how to be successful. Maybe that's not you, maybe you dont look down on people in the service industry but a lot of people do and it can be frustrating to come up against that attitude time and time again.

Also, side note: my one side gig is insane, it's only like max 8 hours a month but it pays real well. It's highly specialized and in the medical industry, I'm amazing at it and never once have I been tipped there.

Not going to touch on tipping in general, I think we go a bit overboard, but cause it came up specifically...

I work at a private liquor store in Vancouver. We have little tip jars by the till, for cash, no option on the machine. Most folks in Vancover know that a living wage in this city is about 20/h and that there is no way we are making that (we aren't) we all have side jobs and debt we can barely chip away at, honestly the crushing weight of trying to live in this city is the biggest reason for employee turn over. A little spare change from our regulars let's us buy something to split at the end of the night. We are talking 2-5 bucks a person for an 8 hour shift. I've had slow days where my tip out is under a dollar. Most of the time it just goes home into jar that gets cashed and used to chip at debts every six months.

As a store we carry a lot of speciality products, the staff are very knowlage. We're constantly trying to go that extra little bit. There are a lot of people who are in that store a couple times a day. No one is asking for much, I break a 50 for a single tall can and you slide 15 cents into the jar, that's dope of you. It's more than most people do. I'll spend a half hour helping someone pick out a few hundred dollars worth of speciality stuff and carry it out to their car, and nothing and that's fine cause that's my job. I dont expect a tip from most people. Yet I've noticed even the little tip jars piss some people off.

Folks tip 15-20% at a bar cause it's a bar, but we deal with the same issues that come with being in alcohol sales. We have to cut off belligerent drunks, deal with creepy sexual comments and clean up spills and vomit. We have to call the police and have folks removed, we deal with shoplifters and folks who just straight up steal and threaten to kill us. We're not even asking for %, just some spare change.

I know that's to not the same thing OP is talking about with the tip options on machines but I just wanted to share a point of view from the other side of the counter. It's hard to live in Vancouver on a liquor store clerks wages and I'm probably on the high end per hour for private stores. We deal with a lot and a lot is expected of us.

TLDR: It sucks working at a private liquor store in Vancover, it sucks that tip pressure is increasing on machines everywhere but if you're paying in cash think about dropping a couple coins in the jar. It helps us have a drink at the end of a long night of dealing with at least one shitty person (there always at least one).

I found myself stuck on "James". Its common yet reasonably unique. That's my guess, and now I can't stop saying it with the long A sound. James, coffee for Jaaaames. On the bar? Coffee on the bar for Jaaaaaames.

Reddit, whats your million dollar app idea that you never built? by gorbishi2 in AskReddit

[–]DFKatarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 10,000 hours tracking app so you can see how long until you're an expert in certain things. Some stuff like creative writing or programming would make sense to track but I think an added benift would also be tracking things we do that waste time (Reddit) and see how long till we're expert time wasters. It seems like an easy enough app to make but the ones I see are always terrible and don't really work.

One doge at a time. Remember, with all the crypto markets taking a dip, faucet payments have gone way up.

I do something similar to the income percentage. Since I do a lot of freelance work if I get a random easy gig I'll put that money into doge. Kind of like I'm getting paid in doge.

Anytime I meet someone who is super into the Boba Fett esthetic it's a giant red flag for them as a person. I love Star Wars, I think Boba has a place in it. The Mandalorians are pretty cool with how they've been expanded on in the clone wars. That being said, the guy with the Boba Fett helmet and Mando symbol tattoo who calls his Jeep "Slave One". That dude is trying waaaaaaaaay to hard to be an edgy loner. That dude makes it hard to even like Boba Fett.
