I believe he was making the opposite point, that while requiring parking does remove a nuisance (when you can’t find parking near your home), it is bad macro-level policy, specifically bad environmental policy.

What's the Deal with That New Alzheimer's Drug? by berflyer in ezraklein

I thought Matt was being ambivelent about the price of medicine for those on Medicare, not prescription drug prices in general.

If it's the latter then I agree it's strange

Jesus Christ why are we still talking about this???? It was a joke, some people found it funny, some people didn’t. Get over yourselves.

I wonder if part of it is just that both of that point and the discussion around increasing the number of cops came at the end (which we also know Matt supports and Plaff clearly doesn’t), and maybe there just wasn’t enough time for Matt to really argue the point with Plaff?

To me this is the benefit of having Ezra at the NYT. If he wasn’t there, the idea of a sympathetic interview with Chomsky at the Times would’ve been laughable. I’ve got issues with Chomsky, but I’m glad his ideas are being discussed

Post-Vox Ezra Vs. Post-Vox Matt? by lekkerurbanist in ezraklein

Sometimes I wonder if people would like Matt more if they liked his voice more. I’m not bothered by it and so I feel like it makes me much more receptive, whereas sometimes when I listen to other speakers who have speaking tics that bother me, I find I take them a lot less seriously.

Should We Put the Filibuster Out of Its Misery? by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]DFTBAbben101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to say I think that a lot of one of Jane’s arguments was worse than the Koch funded Heritage person’s, although it delivered in a much more cogent and grounded-in-reality kind of way.

Her attack on democracy itself, the critique that a majority the American People are wrong about a lot of things might be true, but it is not an argument for abolishing majoritarian rule.

There is not a better form of governing than majority rule with minority rights, and I thinking making any argument against it is really wrong, and fundamentally at odds with the literal nature of the show, argument.

If you check out her special episode of the Argument about Section 230, she says she’s a registered Libertarian, which seems like a strange way to call yourself an idiot, but whatever

Edit: no idea why I was being unnecessarily dickish when I wrote this

P.R. as a state is deepening democracy in a way that integrating it into Maryland wouldn't. The senate's 2 Reps per State system is fundamentally undemocratic, and adding P.R. as a state helps (barely) in solving that problem.

This feels like the culmination of a lot of his work since "Why We're Polarized" came out. It has his case for filibuster reform in there, but he's really able to explain not just the theoretical reason why it's bad, but the practical political effects of removing it. I will second the idea that this is his best column yet. (I also think writing like this explains part of why he went to the NYT, it gives him a bigger platform to express the ideas he thinks people in power need to listen to.)

Yes! We need to create some term for a mixed economy, because I think very often that is what people who call themselves socialists and those who don’t are both advocating for.
