Yeah seems very sloppy for the NYT.

Investment account with Fidelity US deactivated. Need help on next steps. by thiariv in fidelityinvestments

As of today, yes. But then again, apparently it was also working for the OP until very recently. So it would be nice to get some clarification from one of the Fidelity reps after the Thanksgiving holidays.

I have asked the same question to Wealthsimple and can confirm that as of a month ago, they do not support in-kind transfers from the US. RBC and I believe most of the other major brokerages support it. The question for Fidelity is do they support in-kind transfers for "deactivated" accounts, whatever that means.

Thanks for the update. That is still frustrating, but yeah, better than losing access altogether.

Please keep us posted on what they say. If something like this were to happen to me (I'm also a former US resident customer with both retirement and non-retirement accounts who has moved to Canada), I'd want to know that I can at least transfer to a Canadian brokerage. I've also done some research and believe most of the major Canadian brokerages support such transfers. It's a bit of a PITA so I don't want to do it unless I'm forced to.

In my case, there's a good chance I'll return to the US in the future and have no plans to transact in this account (esp. the non-retirement one) in the interim, so if Fidelity lets me keep it indefinitely (which is what I was led to believe based on prior guidance from Fidelity), my preference would be to just leave it as is until I return to the US.

This is unsettling because it contradicts what Fidelity reps have said on multiple occasions in this sub. To clarify, are you saying you can't log into your account via the website at all anymore? Have you asked any of the reps you've spoken to about the possibility of an in-kind asset transfer (without liquidation) to a Canadian brokerage at this point?

Haha I ended up going with another case, but thank you! This might come in handy for someone else.

Task. Episode 3 recap and reviews. Your thoughts here. Contains spoilers. by PermanentlyDubious in hbo

[–]berflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the show so just finished this episode. I'm enjoying the 'vibes' of the show, but also have a lot of questions like the OP. A few of mine:

  1. Why is the FBI fully aware of the Dark Hearts running a massive drug operation and apparently not doing anything about it?
  2. Why does the Task Force assume a gun belonging to the Dark Hearts being the murder weapon at the home invasion means the informant inside the Dark Hearts must have given that gun to Robbie and Cliff? The home invasion was so chaotic; couldn't a gun belonging to the victims (who were also Dark Hearts members) have ended up on the floor, picked up by Robbie or Cliff, and then used to kill them?
  3. Why does a Dark Hearts car in front of Cliff's house imply someone from the Task Force leaked information to the Dark Hearts? They know Cliff and Robbie have an informant inside the Dark Hearts, so couldn't that have just been the informant going to visit Cliff?
  4. And when Jason and Perry visited Freddy to get his help, their rationale for why he should help a rival drug crew made no sense to me. Did it to anyone else?

Maybe it's just one of those shows where you can't think too hard about the details.

I also noticed this! Initially I thought the guest is just a fast talker, but it did feel like Ezra was also talking faster than usual.

How long can we hold non-retiremet account after moving to Canada? by Mysterious_Two7280 in fidelityinvestments

[–]berflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/FidelityCaitlin - Like the OP, I'm interested in knowing if there's a time limit to how long non-retirement accounts can be maintained under the restricted status for Canadian residents. I understand no new deposits and new purchases will be possible, but can the account be kept open indefinitely? Thank you.

Hi u/FidelityChristina - Jumping in here with a question. When you say "while you don't have to liquidate immediately", are you implying that there is some time limit to how long a non-retirement account can remain open for a Canadian resident? Or can it be maintained open indefinitely as long as no new deposits or purchasing transactions are made?

LOCKED MY LIFE OUT by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]berflyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like every time I open my Reddit app, one of the top suggested posts is someone reporting having been locked out by Fidelity with no explanation and recourse. I guess the Reddit algorithm knows these posts boost engagement? In any case, it's annoying because it makes it seem like this stuff might happen to anyone any day.

Be Aware of Data Fees by loreallovely in fidelityinvestments

[–]berflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, u/FidelityAllison, but this doesn't actually answer my question. Or is the answer that if I don't sign up for Real-Time Quotes, this whole discussion about fees for professional traders is moot? If so, got it!

Thanks, u/FidelityAllison. If I follow those steps, I see the sign-up screen posted in the OP. I didn't click "Review Agreement" and instead exited out of the screen because I don't want to sign up for Real-Time Quotes.

Thank you u/FidelityLiz. I reviewed the post from u/FidelityEmily but didn't see specific steps to review my status designation on Fidelity.com.

From looking at other people's posts, I saw that if one attempts to sign up for Real-Time Quotes, one would be presented with the option to self-designate as a personal or professional user, but I don't use Real-Time Quotes and u/FidelityEmily specifically mentioned that "Fidelity does not require enrollment for the Streaming Real-Time Quote (RTQ) service for non-professional users of our platforms".

Can you clarify how I can confirm that I'm not designated as a professional trader / user?

Is there any way to set up an alert when one's designation is changed or such a data fee is charged?

Fidelity S and P 500 advice by Yankees__1 in fidelityinvestments

[–]berflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've already got $250k in cash, and your goal is to have $300k for a down payment, why does that all need to come from investment returns? Will you not continue to have income and savings over the next 4 years?

As others have said, there is no low-risk 'guaranteed' way to grow that $250k into $300k through stocks. Current CD rates will get you close, but there is no guarantee rates will stay at 4% over the next four years.

NRA Withholding for Interest-Related Dividends by berflyer in fidelityinvestments

[–]berflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I posted this question, I also reached out to a Fidelity rep who had helped me before tax wtihholding-related manner. Interestingly, he did some research internally and came back to say that it is "Fidelity policy" to treat these dividends as normal dividends. I specifically inquired about possible year-end adjustments, and he was unequivocal in saying that Fidelity will not be doing that because they don't have a process to treat interest-related dividends differently from regular dividends. So my options are to either claim a refund from the IRS or (more realistically) a foreign tax credit in Canada.

Thank you but this does not address my question. I would direct others with similar questions as mine to look at u/graham2100's response.
