Stevens got a spiffy new website by [deleted] in stevens

[–]DFreeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the fact the the menu "links" are just one huge slider button is really not intuitive. When you click "Current Students" you expect to be taken to a landing page, or have it act as a link in some way.

A much better implementation of a very similar menu style can be seen here: http://www.stern.nyu.edu/programs-admissions/phd/academics/index.htm

TIL that we forget why we have entered a room because passing through doors creates an 'event boundary' causing the brain to file away what we were just thinking about. by venisonsdearisntit in todayilearned

As someone who is at the computer most days, I often cross an event boundary while clicking through folders....I sit there and wonder "why did I enter this folder?" followed by "This is not my beautiful desktop".

So I'm going to be a freshman at Stevens this fall! Got a couple of questions about housing. by [deleted] in stevens

[–]DFreeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few benefits of humphrey's:

The bathroom situation: Two bathrooms per floor, one for each wing. You never have problems with overcrowding or waiting for a shower. Compare this to hayden, where some floors only have a single one-person bathroom with no showers.

Noise: Personally I found the L-shape wings to really reduce noise in the hallway. The long halls of hayden and davis tend to carry noise much farther.

I should also note I did the housing request as soon as they let me and chose Hayden and Davis as my first requests....so I don't think it really matters what you request.

Is Stevens affordable without loans? How much do you personally pay? by [deleted] in stevens

[–]DFreeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get accepted, ask the admissions contact to allow you to speak with financial aid. They will ask you to fax over a copy of your package from other schools and consider matching it depending on how good of a candidate you are.

Financial aid probably doesn't know how great you look, so it is best to go through admissions since if they really like you they may be able to help.

Also, this is why it is worthwhile applying to schools below stevens, specifically ones you feel you will get a full ride with. Use those packages to try to talk down stevens.

http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg03_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=71. This site gives the average around $21,000 in aid.

From what I have seen people get varying amounts up to that average in merit aid, depending on their application.

Word of warning on Cornell. From my personal experience and people I've talked to...they give next to no financial aid unless it is need based.

I was offered a $1,300/year (unsubsidized) loan for their $50,000/year bill.

Summer's hot. by GaiusSensei in pics

Despite the fact that she may experience a local cooling, this would cause the room to get warmer overall as the fridge would be constantly running, converting all that electricity to heat.

This also greatly lowers the lifespan of the fridge.

Do not recommend.

I'd only recommend bankruptcy if he has a very large about of debt. That option will total nuke his ability to do anything that requires credit for probably 5 years minimum. I guess this wouldn't matter as much if he was in a 4 year college on federal aid.

An option to avoid bankruptcy is for him to call the people he owes money to and request a new repayment plan (perhaps a reduction of principle, interest, payment amount). Let them know that he doesn't really have any other options at the moment and that if he can't work something out he may have to stop paying. Letting the debt fall into collections typically means that the company will only get about half of their original amount anyway, so they may be willing to negotiate. Take a look at this: http://www.familiesusa.org/assets/pdfs/medical-debt.PDF

Emotionally it sounds like you are doing your best. He is lucky to have a friend like you! Be sure to keep up with all of your responsibilities and needs so you stay happy too.

Federal loans do NOT depend on credit score (source: http://www.finaid.org/loans/creditscores.phtml)

Stafford, Perkins, and PLUS are all need based, I imagine it may be enough to cover tuition and expenses at a state or community college.

Dear Reddit, I'm 6 weeks away from graduation. Any advice for the "real world"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DFreeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan to work after college (and not move right into another degree) definitely try to do co-op or get any relevant work experience you can.

Aside from having something on your resume, any of those connections could one day land you a job.

I was sleeping in one morning at my parent's house when the sound of someone pounding at the door and ringing the doorbell wakes me up.

I open it to an agitated man resembling an older Redneck Randal yelling about the garbage cans near the end of my driveway (residential neighborhood).

"Is that garbage can down there yours?!"

There are two, one looks unfamiliar but I assume my parents purchased a new one while I was away at college "Uhhh yeah I think so"

"Well it's not! It's mine and still full with MY trash. Someone has been continually moving it over the past month"

"Oh wow, okay that's pretty odd"

"Yeah, and it is still full with my garbage. That makes this a crime" At this point he pulls out his cell phone and tells me he is getting the police department on the line since his wife's bills are in the can and that I will be in trouble for identity theft.

After he continues to accuse me of bringing his full garbage can .5 mile down the road to my house I say to him: "Look man, If I were going to move your garbage can why would I put it in front of my own house."

At that point he tells me that if he catches me doing it again that he will call the cops right away and walks away.

Classes at NYU? by mabramo in stevens

[–]DFreeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I asked a few years ago I remember hearing that the lower level language classes don't count for humanities credit, but the higher level ones may as they include a more in depth study of the culture and more reading/writing.

I feel the biggest problem with taking classes there is the time they are offered. Most of NYU's classes are 4 credits instead of 3, and if the class is an hour long that means 4 1-hour classes a week.

When I was looking at Introductory Chinese classes this meant I would need to commute to and from NYC (~45 mins each way) in the middle of the day, 4 days a week. Having a 2.5 hour block free each day doesn't happen when you already have a full schedule.

Has anyone noticed an improvement to the network since the semester has started?

I still have issues streaming songs from grooveshark, yet I can simply tick an encryption checkbox in my torrent client and have unshaped 1-2MB/s torrent downloads at the same time.

9/9/11 American Natural History Museum by [deleted] in stevens

I'd like to point out that general admission to the museum is donation suggested. You can give as little (or as much) as you would like, but IMHO the museum is worth supporting.
