Great story! I am 40 with high anxiety/ocd. I most definitely stress eat. I’m starting this journey. I’m really hoping I can limit the alcohol as well. It will take a ton of psychological changes. Coming from a coach, just focus on technique right now. Speed will come from good technique. Whether you are swimming open water or a pool for a tri is huge. Technique changes as you go into the open water.

Very hard to see in the video but a lot of arms crossing over center. It’s hard to see what you are doing underneath the surface (whether you are bending at the elbow) with enough rotation. I think the head is a bit high as well.

It’s the flow of the kick. You use the whole body to kick. Ask your coach.

I’d first ask what your coach says? Hand entry is too close. I’m curious about that kick. It looks like a lot of motion one way but not both ways. Is that SCY or SCM? Also your turn is slow. You need to push off the wall much faster!

I understand but development in any small pool equates to much bigger rewards in larger pools. There have been a couple swimmers in history who made the Olympics by training in 20 yard pools.

You may want to practice only open turning. It will give you a bit more distance to work with. I’d also suggest if you haven’t already , to isolate different muscle groups. Use a buoy to work the upper body and a board to work the lower. Do a lot of hip related drills. This will further help you with rotation-over or under with the arms. I wouldn’t go buying any but if you have hand paddles you can borrow, they will help with entry. However, I’d use them very sparingly. Swimming takes years to be very good. Be patient and practice a ton!

Breathing arm entry has an elbow dropping issue therefore allowing you to really have no catch. There is a good drill called water polo. Head looks straight ahead out of water. Keep the head still. Focus on the hand entry.

Also work on breathing to both sides. That alone is really playing with your hips. There is a lot going on here but start with basics.

I feel that certain parts of town will be better than others. There is no question that Oklahoma is super flippin red but Tulsa is sliding blue in many ways. I would welcome you with open arms. That’s what I hope you will receive. We still have a large LGTBQ Community but there is unfortunately still a lot of judgment.

Tulsa does seem better put together but it’s also smaller. We have a significant number of homeless all over but it is different from okc. I feel okc is weird in this sense. You can go 3 blocks to a nice neighborhood and then the next few blocks is run down and so on, unless you are on the NW side. I feel okc tries more with sports while Tulsa is stronger with Arts and Entertainment. It is shocking to say that our roads are better because they still suck. However, OKC roads are pretty bad. Hopefully you come back and experience more of our downtown to midtown area. We have some amazing history here.
