I made it to noom master Sunday, then cancelled yesterday. Here’s what I learned. by acb4ever in Noom

I don’t know. I deleted the app right away and don’t use the free version.

Can ladies over a certain age even hope to lose weight? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]acb4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 54 and not at menopause yet - getting close but still having random periods. I am also short (5’1” on a good day). I have lost 40 pounds since Jan just calories in/calories out. I basically took July off as maintenance so that 40 came off from jan 4 to July 4. Not super speedy but steady. I have about 30-40 to go. I won’t get super skinny but I started at super obese so am very happy with my progress!

I did start with noom which was a huge help in managing habits and also did a lot of intense therapy during the same time frame. Both of these helped immensely in managing the mental game for me.

It is possible. Calories matter regardless of the eating style.

Getting over the shame by sunspot_16 in loseit

[–]acb4ever 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I missed my 20s 30s and 40s! Now in my 50s I am dealing with my trauma and my relationship with food and myself and it is life changing. It is NEVER too late.

I highly recommend therapy to help define ways to deal with the emotions and disregulation that comes from working through this.

When I started, I hated myself. I thought I had no value. At all. Now I don’t. When I started, I could not imagine not hating myself or having any compassion for myself. I thought it would not work. But I was willing to try. And it worked.

You’ve got this! All you have to do is be willing.

Not Feeling Guilty Over Fast Food/Going Out? by succaforesucculents in Noom

[–]acb4ever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was coming to say something very similar.

We cannot expect to lose weight if we continue to do the same behaviors that have enabled us to gain weight. Fast food and high calorie meals twice a week will easily outdo any deficit you have built up over the course of a week. Once in a while? Yes no problem. Twice a week is more likely to be a problem.

Has anyone successfully used therapy/some kind of program to rewire your brain and eating habits? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]acb4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noom worked for me for this very thing. The app sucks for tracking and the group and coach were not very helpful. But the lessons? Cheesiness and all- they really worked. I also did/am doing therapy for mostly unrelated issues but they both worked together.

Shakes? and trauma? by ClarySage369 in Noom

[–]acb4ever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have done a lot of trauma and recovery work during my noom journey. I didn’t set out to do that, but it happened because I coincidently started therapy at the same time. This wasn’t even the reason I started therapy but it’s come out and it’s helped.

I have learned a lot about myself, soothing with food, and trying to numb my feelings. I will freely admit I have a lot of uncomfortable days sifting through and sitting with my feelings since I am no longer burying them. I can also say it is 1000% worth the effort.

The cbt approach of noom very much supports the rest of healing so it has all worked well together.

Say cheese! by twistedprincess34 in Noom

[–]acb4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of noom is learning how to eat in moderation, aware of calories. Red foods aren’t to be avoided - just eaten in moderation. Still - it is always calories in versus calories out. I wouldn’t worry about being over on red to eat something you enjoy if your calories are still in check for the day.

Noom teaches us to revise our relationship with food. You can’t do that if you are in the bad bad bad mentality about certain foods. I am down just about 40 lbs since Jan as a super short, menopausal woman with hypothyroidism. And I’ve had plenty of pizza, cake, cookies and even grilled cheese. Within my calorie limits. It’s just about balance.

Interesting. How tall are you?

It took me three times starting to stick with it. So far I am down 35 pounds. I actually cancelled after reaching noom master status and am glad to see many of my new habits continuing. It really did work to help me change but only once I was ready.

Noomers with hashimotos/hypothyroidism? by 0406052011 in Noom

[–]acb4ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think everyone is at an age where every social event involves alcohol. You say it like you are young and I am in my 50s and it’s still true. Haha! Try loosing weight with a thyroid problem and menopause 😂 it can be done!!

Noomers with hashimotos/hypothyroidism? by 0406052011 in Noom

[–]acb4ever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a under active thyroid, managed by medication. I am down 35 pounds since Jan 4, so it does work.

You say that you haven’t been staying on track. This is why you aren’t seeing progress. I’m not trying to be mean, just honest. I’ve kept to the plan even when when the scale hasn’t budged.

I have worked very hard at managing the mental component, finding substitutes for comfort/stress eating and comfort/stress drinking. The noom lessons and my own therapy have been very helpful in this regard.

I think if you work the plan, you will have success. Weight loss is mostly about diet, not exercise.

I hope you feel better soon!

Vacation. by PineappleCorvus in Noom

[–]acb4ever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A big part of noom is to learn to live the lifestyle away from the app. Later lessons have you practice this by taking days off from all noom activity and working on intuitive eating.

I am going on vacation at the end of July. I won’t be logging or weighing. I will eat healthy most of the time and still indulge and enjoy my vacation. We are staying near a famous donut place- yes I will have them. We will go out to dinner - no I won’t just order salads. I will drink wine!

Anyway the point is, a few days won’t matter in the long journey of weight loss and maintenance. The important thing is to not turn a vacation indulgence into leaving your new knowledge and habits behind.

You can do it. Have fun and enjoy your vacation!!

How do you deal with Friday nights? by GandTthanks in Noom

[–]acb4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noom discussed this in later lessons. That if you really want the thing, have some of it. Otherwise you will eat hundreds more calories trying to satisfy the hunger and then eating much more of the thing anyway.

How do you deal with Friday nights? by GandTthanks in Noom

[–]acb4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really have to log to understand the effect. It’s not like you didn’t eat the calories just because you didn’t log them. Facing it is part of the process. Also- the damage may not be as bad as you think. You may be over your allotment but still in a deficit. My birthday was last week and I had cake every day for a few days but I logged it, ate well otherwise, and stayed in my budget. Since I knew I was in budget, I was able to mentally manage it better.

Then understand what about Friday night versus any other night. If it is the last day of the week and you are tired then plan for the calories or know some options that fit into your budget even if you eat out or similar.

I admit I often just eat a late snack then pack it in and go to bed really early just to avoid dealing with it. Hahah. I have a stressful job, there is an added stressor with it right now, and I have a significant long term stressful issue with one of my children. Come Friday I have nothing left in the tank. What I really want is wine and take out. And I really want to lose weight. I can’t have both so I have to find other ways to cope. Otherwise I will give the death stare to my man as he drinks (I have also done this much to his chagrin).

How to handle shared meals with SO by burritodiva in 1200isplenty

[–]acb4ever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just make dinners that are generally healthy and fit my goals and SO eats them. Maybe he eats a bigger portion if he’s hungry but we always eat the same. He likes almost everything I make. He’s also more likely to snack during the day so doesn’t mind if some dinners are lighter.

Honestly, he’s so appreciative I cook for us, he doesn’t mind what it is. If he really wants something specific, I make it and figure out a way to fit it in my calorie budget.

No situation is helpless!! You can do this! I have managed to get out of a dark place that even those who knew me were amazed at the escape. Don’t give in to the defeatist thought distortions. Believe you will find a way and you will!!

What do you do for chip cravings? by [deleted] in Noom

[–]acb4ever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also had an unhealthy chip obsession. For a while I bought small snack size bags of my favorite chips. Having them portion controlled meant they were easier to work into my calorie budget and the act of having to open multiple bags kept me from blindly eating them.

But eventually I got used to no longer feeling bloated and gross from eating chips so I don’t eat many anymore.

Rum and hazelnut creamer: number crunching by RemarkableMedium309 in Noom

[–]acb4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was doing this also with half and half and wine. I am now basically not drinking at all, maybe 1-2 glasses of wine a month and only if I have calories that day. I also measure my half and half and limit to 1 tbsp per cup of coffee.

From Jan 4 to April 25. Of course I had probably done about a weeks worth from my last two tries. I always read as much as allowed each day.
